That’s a shame that the mother cashed out her plan. My mother had one of these plans set up and had it not been for it we would’ve had to pay so much more money out-of-pocket for her funeral expenses. Just for context my mom passed away in 2017 and at that time her funeral came out to about $21,000. That included everything from her viewing to the casket and the cemetery plot. I think after her policy there was a balance of $5,000 still owed that myself and my brothers split 4 ways. It worked out well since we’re all financially stable so there wasn’t an issue paying it upfront. This is the reason I tell people especially as they get older to have a plan for their funeral. Whether it’s a burial or cremation. It’s not morbid. It’s practical.

Parents are supposed to take care of their children. That’s why CPS and other services exist. If a child chooses to take care of their parents, then that’s a combination of the good will of the child and the parent having done a good enough job to be deserving of that. So what if the mother took care of him an extra 5 years? If she’d lived another 6, I’m sure he would’ve taken care of her for that time too. There’s no law that obligated a child to care for their parent once they’ve moved out. Some children can’t wait to get as far away from their parents as possible. As much as I thought the defendant going on about this was unnecessary for the testimony he was given, I can understand feeling frustrated with siblings wanting more inheritance when they didn’t do much to assist in taking care of their parents.
