He pays the bills as they come in. Now, he didn’t realize it was not measuring what he was actually using I.e. it ran slower than it was supposed to. The first bill was low. It made sense, they were not home. But he doesn’t pay a whole lot of attention after that. 6 months later the electric company goes to house, discovers the meter issue and then tries to back bill him. Problem, no one has a clue how much wattage he used in this period versus what he paid. The electric company tried to scare him into paying but he didn’t bite. They dropped it when he got a lawyer, because no one could definitively prove what he used in that time period versus what he paid was incorrect.

You have to love the mental gymnastics of feeling that the defendants are responsible for bills they never received, but her son performing a blatantly criminal act is of no issue at all. She also believes the defendants were excellent tenants. Lady, the problem is your son, and you just embarrassed yourself on an international stage.

I wonder if the hydro company charged her. I am guessing the hydro company would have disconnected the service and "fixed" what her son did. Maybe they fined the owner too.

Hold up! When you move into a new place, ARE YOU NOT suppose to call the electric company and tell them you are in the property? That’s not the landlords’ responsibility. It’s strange that the defendant would not be wondering WHY they weren’t getting an electric bill and water bill. That would have prompted me to call the company if they wanted to be honest. The landlord wouldn’t know if she wasn’t getting a bill. That would have prompted the electric company to see WHY they weren’t getting a bill. Yes the son bare some responsibility, but they stayed and used utilities for 2 yrs without paying.

Ah, yes. Another landlord that’s self entitled to believing that their tenants are responsible for more than their monthly rent.
