The staggeringly beautiful voice and singing of the late Judith Durham is one of my single biggest reasons for a belief in God. Even if you believe that all life on the Earth evolved over many millions of years, Judith’s voice and singing were just so wonderful and seemingly miraculous that Charles Darwin’s Theory Of Evolution just won’t explain it.

I've never believed in a Deity (which one would one choose from?). However I believe in Judith. What a beautiful Soul she was. She did not die peacefully I hope people realize that. Dying by failing to be to breathe hasta be a horrible way to go. It was stated that the Seekers spoke with her a few hours before she passed and tell you what that had to be really tough on them because they cherished her. I was born a few months before her but I must certainly was not endowed with that beautiful voice of hers not even close. Nowadays I listen to Sissel. She has the same type of beautiful persona that Judith had but probably a bit more outgoing.

"Hark, now hear the angels sing..." Judith is singing about herself. There isn't and will never be more angelic voice to sing this song. This vibrating, lamentous tone is so much heartmelting that I can't take my ears off her mouth.

As a teenager in the '60s I thought she was soooo pretty and sang even prettier. Folk music wouldn't have been the same without her. And she didn't have to wear skimpy clothes to win your heart.

Sorry my description was a bit confusing - the Boys' vocals were from a prformance in 1990, but Judith's was from her Christmas album, recorded in 1970. I just blended them tgether to re-create the Seekers sound. :-)

First time hearing this. Very nice rendition (and nice work on the mixing). It actually goes beyond the version of just her. The most touching version I've heard from a female. The most touching male version I would contend is Jose Feliciano's. The song also works when it's done up tempo.

This is just Judith Durham. NOT the Seekers. It was recorded after The Seekers broke up, and none of the Seekers had anything to do with it at all. My mother bought the LP it was recorded for, “For Christmas With Love” for me as a Christmas present at a service station in 1968 - yes, service stations were the outlet for buying it! I still have the album with its notation “Collector’s Album, limited Edition, recorded exclusively for Goodyear Australia.” It was recorded by Capitol Records in LA.
@rich9636 жыл бұрын
OK, hands up - I cheated a little bit with this one by adding the male Seekers' voices to Judith's version in the choruses & refrain, but I like the Seekery sound it produces (and it took ages to do!)
@aml36686 жыл бұрын
OK. Sorry for being so vehement! With the help of some wine I was remembering Judith as my girlhood idol. I still love that pure, stained glass voice, which always sounded better solo, IMO. Who else managed that in the pop of the 60s, 70s, 80s? Dusty Springfield, Karen Carpenter and Annie Lennox and just one or two others. Aged ten, I was horrified to hear on the news that The Seekers were splitting - until I learned that Judith had instigated the split. My parents were very indulgent of my devotion. They drove 20k to buy that album and 35k so I could see The Seekers film! (We lived in the country.) It instigated my interest in popular music. Meaning, among other things, that I looked at the back of my Seekers EPs and thought "Really? THAT Paul Simon?" And "Really?!? THAT Kim Fowley?!?" And I got the Dusty connection. Dusty vanished too, for years. Very sad. It was a man's world. I have to agree with Nick Cave's and Paul Kelly's admiration for Judith. It is Judith who makes The Seekers' exceptional. She didn't and doesn't need the blokes behind her. But they needed Judith.
