Sophie is exceptional and coaches equally Gi and No Gi. I get what you are saying, there are not many that do this but from experience I know there are some dotted around. You just have to do you research to find them. Glad you enjoyed it!

Great technique! Also, when they have the collar tie, you can immediately go into the throw. You don't have to swim inside. Another technical point is that if you push up on their armpit with your elbow, it makes the control on the arm tighter and increases the leverage on the shoulder.

I'm not gonna lie I don't see this working out very well in a sport competition, but then again now I realize that I was missing out on a few key details. Don't get me wrong though I've done this in real life. It's a classic throw. Thanks for posting great technique, it made me see it in a different way.

ippon seionage is a great through if mugged from the rear in a choke, however in the street never give up your back for this throw or go to your knees. A better throw for the street is koshi garama/ neck hip throw.

The bigger the uki, the better it works. It generally pretty hard to do any variation of seoi nage against someone much shorter than you, whereas bigger opponents go over all the faster.

Hi, I have been a Judoka for about 7 years and recently stopped. I gave MMA a try and I am really enjoying it. Everytime we spar for a takedown + tap ( no strikes ) I always use this because it feels very natural to me since it is my best judo throw. Since we spar with no gi, it is hard to perform this throw, however with a right set-up I can pull it off... My main trouble is when I actually finish the throw, my neck becomes exposed and usually my opponent takes my back or goes to side-control. I sparred with a black belt jiujitsu fighter, and she was trying to set me up for an ogoshi throw, so I went to clinch, pushed and pulled and went for drop seoi nage, she ended up rear naked choking me... Please give me a tip on how to fix this problem - my mind is only starting to adjust away from ippon to tap the opponent so I am having trouble.
@SophieCoxjudo8 жыл бұрын
+Sen Panda The arm has to be across your shoulder, not around your neck. Tight upper body control and the controlled landing onto the ground is key
@tomaspanda12458 жыл бұрын
Ok I see! I will try it, thank you. After so many months I am now a lot more adjusted to grappling and can not see myself ever coming back to judo due to me loving all the leg locks that I have learned ! Your advice will certainly help me a lot, thank you! (I am competing in a month for the first time ever in BJJ so have to practice this :O)
@SophieCoxjudo8 жыл бұрын
+Dominus Providebit Hi Dominus, I would never expect my opponent to let me, you have to work for this position. Usually I would do it from the clinch, take e grip and attack within a couple of seconds.
@tomaspanda12458 жыл бұрын
+Dominus Providebit this is for mma not for judo. after the tip i got given, I managed to learn how to adapt and now -clinch is my best friend. i clinch and set this up by an ouchi gari. push them off then go for this. works like a charm. if that fails and im on my knees - quickly switch to a leg lock.

Goh YX have a tighter grip and it’s all about speed of the throw to prevent the arm from slipping.

hei bro i wanna ask i saw another version about this technique he didn't knee drop, what is better? what's advantage if i do whit knee drop?
@warriorcollective9 жыл бұрын
Zain Iqbal Hey, I think you may have watched someone do the shoulder throw without the drop. They are two different variations so it is a bit difficult to say which is better, it would depend on the context. I suppose the advantage of the drop is that it is often easier to get the other person over you quicker as you utilise your own body weight in the throw (as it is a sacrifice) whereas the downside is you will be more exposed for a counter if you fail in the attempt. I hope this helps

Sophie's videos are really useful not only for judoka who make a serious study of the no-gi game, but also BJJ players and even the average person trying to incorporate basic judo into their arsenal. Don't know how it is over in the UK, but in the US there aren't many judo clubs that place a lot of focus on no-gi throws, though that is starting to change, slowly. I just started a strictly no-gi adult judo program in my local area (Selden, NY in Long Island) called Earthbound Freestyle Judo, and Sophie has definitely been an inspiration to our program, knowing that a judoka of her caliber is out there making no-gi Judo a major part of her teaching. And if anyone local to us here in Selden (Suffolk County, NY) is looking to learn some nogi Judo, our website is judonogi.com We just started so we're still working on video content, but it will be up soon. You can also find us on Instagram @earthboundjudo and on FB as well.

Please make a video Judo possibilities with different clothes/Half Gi (pullover, t-shirt..) What always confuses me is that by self defense everyone always thinks about "no gi". I never got attacked by a guy in underwear! Everytime the attacker had Jacket (=gi) or t-shirt (=half gi?). Even if he takes of his shirt for some reason, you can still grab into his trousers and eventually his belt, which allows much more throws. Shirt allows some more throws and definitely othen jime and many others :)

aikighost I understand completely where you are coming from, a lot of people feel exactly the same way.
