Something I hated about Judo initially was how pedantic judoka are with their nomenclature. But having grown up wrestling in the United States it is so helpful to have such a universal and detailed naming system. It definitely ties back to judo's (honestly) more intellectual training approach.

This video convinced me to sign up for Judo again. I stopped doing Judo at 15 after 6 years because almost all moves in this video are banned at that age in the Netherlands. But now that I'm older (23) and much stronger I feel like I can be competitive in this beautiful sport again.

There was a legitimate problem in 2008, but the powers that be panicked and threw the baby out with the bathwater. The problem of mindless leg grabbing and sprawling could have been solved by: 1. Raising the standard of Ippon 2. Penalizing stalling 3. A similar rule as described by Chadi/ Freestyle Judo, whereby you need to have a grip before going for a leg grab. I'd love to see Kata Guruma and Te Guruma come back, but I'm not holding my breath...

Very helpful and interesting. In Ohshima Sensei Shotokan Karate we have very similar takedowns as part of our nage waza - part of the curriculum for 4th dan test. For example, morote gari is called udewa and the technique is almost the same. Also sukui nage, we call it gyaku tsuchi or saktsuchi, a very similar technique. I enjoy very much watching your channel, thank you!

This is an interesting video. But i wish there was more information on actual technique how those moves are accomplished. Those moves would be very effective if executed. even ones that just put your opponent to the ground because when they are on the ground they are more vulnerable. But it seems to me that strength seems to still be large part of it. what do you do if an opponent is both heavier then you and more athletic than you and knows how to sprawl well?

All these techniques equal death. That being said I don't understand the idealist mentality in judo when it comes to technique. If it works use it. Back rounded or not who cares. The goal is to win. I'm just talking competition, in the dojo that's entirely different.
@Chadi4 жыл бұрын
I see your point Joe but the thing is rules should be put for 2 reasons, 1 safety and 2 to take the sport/art to the next level, rounded back and grabbing pants and running can seriously injure you either your back, or different contexts, like guillotines in bjj and knees to the face in MMA/streets and it looks absolutely horrendous and reflects poor judo even if it scores, it's important to have upper body control before going to the legs, first it's judo (kuzushi tsukuri and kake) and second it will result in a well controlled and executed throw, have you ever seen a sloppy te/kata guruma from the past?? No, why? Because they started by controlling and gripping the upper body, you only see sloppy doubles, if they came from the kumi kata they'd 100% far more efficient and way more picturesque and monumental.
@joeguillaume2964 жыл бұрын
@@Chadi Well said. Sound logic. No further argument. I concede.
