Agree. What I find very sad is that unfortunately a lot of Judo practitioners never really absorb this aspect. It is not Judo's fault obviously, but human ego being way louder in those people's head. A martial art in the hands of a sociopath turns them into super sociopaths. A good example is Kayla Harrison's former coach, who abused her when she was young. He clearly didn't absorb any of those. And we all see many more like him.

@@Mataninja they fought in vale tudo with no time limits or points, you could only win by submission or KO so a throw almost never ends a match. When you think of a takedown it's not only a perfect judo throw, if I just hang on to you with a body lock and slowly drag you down that's good enough if I'm a beast on the ground because the ref doesn't stand us back up, there's no break in vale tudo. Plus in the old days they rarely fought people with good takedown defense. They had a basic standing curriculum which was good enough for that time, now so many BJJ gyms don't even train the standup portion because they can pull guard.

"competent on the ground" That statement is a fine example of the dunning kruger effect. By today's BJJ's standard, Judokas are incompetent on the ground since not only they don't know the current meta but even lag behind some of what is considered BJJ's basics like most fundamental guard passings.

It seems like most modern judo and jujutsu people think in terms of handling a fight with mostly grappling, often culminating with a submission. Traditional Japanese jujutsu didn’t separate itself so clearly from weapons or striking arts. It might be called bujutsu, with the unarmed aspects called taijutsu (body arts) or torite kenpo being common names spoken or given in scrolls. Iso of Tenshin Shinyo fame talked of the importance of atemi in fighting multiple attackers. I grew up in a ghetto and fought often, and I don’t ever remember being attacked by a guy who didn’t have several buddies with him. So I sure didn’t want to be tangled up in him for long, or get in some prolonged ground battle. Atemi and weapons were common, and we were taught to use throws as finishing techniques. A strong Seoinage that stood a guy on his head or planted him on a fire hydrant usually got rid of him. You have to be fast and efficient, and keep moving.

The Fadda Jiu Jitsu, a non Gracie BJJ variant, gives more emphasys to the takedowns then the Gracie variant, without losing the strength of the ground techniques. It is a really good balance between the takedowns and ground techniques.

With all the refinement of BJJ, both in technique and methodology, that's taken place over the years as newer generations and affiliations continue to develop it, I think it's important that people realize that this is a far cry from the art that the Gracies first learned and proceeded to market to oblivion and back, and also that they were not the only ones to learn the art back in its nascent days, and the differing approaches to it led to some very different focuses. The BJJ that is being practiced by the likes of Roger Gracie, Marcelo Garcia, and Gordon Ryan is almost unrecognizable to that of the art Carlos and Helio Gracie taught.

Yeap, exactly as you said. Everyone sould respect each other, I call bjj coaches newaza masters, from the moment they go safely to the ground they have the upper hand . It's true that if a pure bjj practitioner stand up with a judoca of the same level they will not know what hit them , with stand up you can dictate the beginning of the match and you can actually beat someone very fast, what creates the momentum is the shock of the fall followed by a good submission, imagine though that for self defence the fall can be enough to damage someone off the fight. Judo's ashi waza and gripping especially if used correctly can overwhelm the enemy making him go defensive and never recover. I can see the techniques in the ground being fascinating , and what bjj teachers and fighters did taking an aspect that wasn't familiar with many and master it in order to fill that gap shows us that in fighting everything is useful at the right moment and with the right mentality so we must never forget any technique, instead we sould see where a technique fits in order to perfect our game, for sure though there are techniques more important and usefull than others and sould be more focused on,

I'm Brazilian and a jiu jitsu fighter, at least where I train Jiu Jitsu, the objective is to submit the opponent, standing if possible. In Jiu Jitsu there are 3 "tipos" of fighters, the passers, whose strong point is takedowns and guard passes to obtain good positions and submissions, the guards, whose strong point is their guard, they are the ones who generally pull for guards and get sweeps and submissions, but they are also specialists in some sacrificial takedowns such as the tomoe nage, and finally the "passers-guards", they adapt to the situation of the fight, they are good at takedowns, passes, sweeps, guardas, and has the ability to transition between positions to obtain the submission. All of these types of fighters aim for submission, but each one has a preferred fighting style.

My problem with the majority of Bjj is that it gives you a terrible mindset: to not have to pay attention to the first 2/3 of the fight (standing + takedown). You're only focusing on the ground part. This is an even worse mindset to have for self defense, and it's kind of cocky to assume that you'll still be okay by the time you get to the ground. I don't know why people still aren't calling Bjj 'ground grappling'. Bjj is a subset style for overall grappling. I think that it's too late for the evolution of Bjj to include more stand up/takedown in training because every player is determined to become rockstars at groundwork so most don't even have an interest in any other areas of grappling. Competitively, you're only going to fall behind your peers if you split your training up in that way. It comes down to if you want to holistically learn the art for grappling, and taking the time to put in work in the other areas of weaknesses of Bjj, or focus soley on groundwork for competition.

A simple solution to BJJ's problem with the lack of training for throws and takedowns could be solved by deducting points in competition for pulling guard. The main problem is if people know your takedowns are good they are just going to pull guard on you. I'm fortunate in that I have a professor who is also a black belt in Judo and skilled at wrestling, so throws and takedowns get practiced for self-defense. To be fair not every BJJ school skips the throws and takedowns. In some schools knowing a certain amount is required to advance to higher belts.

There are many different types of jiujitsu . Some are so far away from grappling they can be classified ,by the uninformed ,as a striking art. Self defense is not limited to a specific “art” . Judo 100% for self-defense. Going to the ground should be a last resort as: 1. It removes your best choice for self-defense, running or walking away. 2. It will absolutely get you killed against multiple opponents. 3. It puts you at a disadvantage (even with BJJ training) if size is an issue. A 150lb woman is still able to throw/sweep a 180lb guy, but on the grown, even if trained, get be stopped. 4. You only learn if your opponent can grapple after you have committed. 5. There are lots of things untrained foes can do on the ground which can get you injured. Biting, hair pulling, grabbing your nuts, going for your eyes, grabbing a rock, pounding your head into the pavement, etc. You rarely train against those. 6. Your options to 'win' a fight on the ground are limited and brutal. You have to be willing to choke someone unconscious or break a limb. Allowing them to tap and get up, they could easily continue. If a judo throw is (somehow) illegal, then choking or breaking someone's arm certainly is. They are not appropriate for school yard fights, dealing with a drunk at a party, dealing with a shoplifter, etc. 7. Submission options are highly likely to get third-parties to intervene. They look lethal. 8. Dropping to guard is just asking to be kicked in a real fight. 9. Ground takes too long. Maybe 10-20 seconds. Judo throw is over before your opponent knows what happens. 10. In most judo throws you have some control over the damage you do. You can knee drop (virtually assuring their head/shoulder hits the pavement) or you can stand and hold their head clear so it's (at most) limbs hitting the ground. Further, in Judo, you can just stand over the person with the treat of throwing them again (which is actually trivial) if they try to stand.

Honestly due to Olympic Judo rules changes average judoka (not national level athletes) have problems defending simple double and single legs takedowns, ankle picks, etc because there's no sport reason to train them anymore. Martial arts athletes train to the rule sets, bottom line. There's only so much time to train so you train to the rules, and in general BJJ athletes train takedowns far more than throws, and judoka train throws more than takedowns. To keep doing the "versus" analysis is silly because they have completely different rules that have made the sports develop in different directions. If BJJ awarded a win for a full throw the BJJ athletes would quickly become very good at traditional judo throws. If Judo awarded submissions more than pins and throws then judoka would get much better with that aspect of the game.

"Submissions" are ippon (win) in judo, just as perfect throw or pin. However, the rule set works against groundwork as referees are quick to make the judokas stand up. So many just "turtle up" to stall, which allow them to spend little time on groundwork training and to focus exclusively on their throws instead. Also, if you can win with a pin, working on your submissions from top position means spending more time on something that is not necessary (from a sport perspective).

Hey Chadi what's your view on this, I personally call it jiu jistu, and not bjj, as that's what Maeda called, Rigan machado him self told me and my school, and also Rickson recently agreed with Jocko when he brought up the same view. Rickson also called his association the jiu jitsu global federation. Historically I noticed that the name of the school was called the name of the person like Kano Jiu Jitsu, or gracie Jiu Jitsu.. But jiu jistu as an entity was always the same.

The no gi Ju Jitsu techniques can be found in many martial arts, especially in Silat. What being called as "take downs" are mainly Ju Jitsu/Judo techniques but being called with different names. Asia have sea trade traditions and series of wars up to WW2, so it is not shocking to see martial art relationship here. People just need to open their mind by looking at the sea....

I am still of the opinion that cross training in (kick/thai-)boxing is much better spent time for self-defense than typical "self-defence" drills. I agree we do need some form of striking
@marty6522
@marty6522 3 жыл бұрын
Anyone who understands self-defence would agree that training in an art such as Muay Thai would be vitally important for real confrontations for several reasons. Even if you prefer grappling, you need to train in striking to develop highly trained reflexes to deal with real-world violent scenarios from surprise attacks, weapon assaults, multiple attackers, etc. The best grappler in the world could easily be knocked unconscious and stomped into the ground by a cunning sucker-puncher. The grappler probably wouldn't even see it coming and not have a chance to use his skills. In contrast, a high-level striking would easily destroy the sucker-puncher in a few seconds or less. He'd see the attack coming a mile away and it would seem very slow to him. This isn't to say that Muay Thai is superior to Judo, it's to point out that they both train necessary attributes for self-defence.

In a sporting context, I would say Bjj is better than judo. If your talking strictly self defense, judo is better than bjj simply because judo teaches you to throw the other person and stay standing yourself. You never want to go to the ground willingly in a self defense situation, as most bjj schools focus on. most self defense situations are actually spend most of the time in clinching range. Guess what judo focusses on 80 percent of the time: Clinching range, but unlike wrestling or muay tai where they focus on under/overhooks and collar ties, judo teaches you to make use of a person's clothing by way of the gi. Guess what most people will be wearing in a self defense situation: clothing. if the fight does go to the ground, in a self defense situation, Bjj starts doing way to complicated stuff past blue belt. Ask any of the Gracies when they were still challenging people, most fights back then against unpredictable opponents where won with basic stuff: Kimura, straight armlock, guillotine, rear naked, (back) mount. Exactly the stuff they focus on in judo ne waza. Also, if your in security or law enforcement, nothing discourages a would be assailant more than being thrown on his ass. A far better strategy than rolling on the floor with him, especially if there are weapons or multiple assailants involved. I think Geoff Thompson said it best: " judo is the martial arts world best kept secret"
