Two incredible grappling arts. It's a thing of beauty to see high level judokas or wrestlers compete. The speed, strength and skill are amazing.. Every serious martial artist should take a look at these arts.

As a greco roman wrestler, this is a great video. Just a quick addition, in the suplex, most of the power comes from the legs and hips. In every example that you showed you can see a wrestler explode with his legs and drive his hips forward at the same time as to throw the opponent of balance and lauch him upwards. After that comes the arch of the back. It crucial that you do that work with the legs and hips otherwise it's IMPOSSIBLE to suplex a wrestler where the main strenght comes from the back, its too hard and the opponent will counyer it

@@HadrienATF so there are subs in judo like in BJJ. But none in olympics freestyle and greco wrestling. I don't get, what's the point of wrestling and grappling if you can't sub?🤔🙄🤷‍♂️, just slamming to the ground WWE style is that it? I mean even in MMA slamming is the rarest thing happens coz it's very hard to do, take downs and tripping happen all the time but slams are very rare in mma. So wrestling is just the art of taking down to the grown and defense to not get taken down is that it? But once you take your opponent to the ground, as a wrestler you don't know shite💩 about how to sub your opponent? What r u gonna do to them, just dominate them on top of them? Just bully them make them tired? Just lay and pray? What's the point? 🤷‍♂️. Are slams really that often in olympics freestyle and greco wrestling?

Chadi, you should research Martin "Farmer" Burns the American Wrestling icon. Also you may find it interesting that in the late 1800s & early 1900s in America many boxing champions were cross trained in Wrestling and Judo. The pro-boxing champ Jack Dempsey was also skilled in submission wrestling and Judo. The U.S. president Theodore Roosevelt was a boxer til injury cost him vision in his left eye so he began wrestling and then Judo. He declared Judo to be his favorite fighting art and best for self defense. He converted a room in the White House into a Judo dojo where he forced his generals and body guards to grapple him. In WWII Jack Dempsey was commissioned as an officer in the coast guard to teach fitness & unarmed combat. He taught a Judo based curriculum with some submission catch wrestling & bareknuckle boxing sprinkled within.

I actually used Ura Nage a lot in Judo, both offensively and as a counter to Koshi guruma. In both instances I always used a bodylock, rather than a belt grip. However, I never hit my head on the mat as I've often seen both wrestlers and Judoka do. I think the difference is that I always hugged the uke very tightly to my chest before lifting him and arching backward, and maintained this hold throughout. Consequently, the uke would always hit the mat first and take the full impact of the throw. PS) I would always arch slightly to one side (left or right). For example if the uke had his left arm around the back of my neck, I would arch to my right and throw him over my right shoulder.

Collegiate wrestling coach, newish fan of you. Want to give you some of the “wrestler names” to these techniques. Not all have consistent names but a few do. 1:26 - two techniques here. Chest wrap is the first one when your over both legs when they attack your legs. Kyle dake had a very famous one at the World Cup a few years ago. The traditional lift from pare terre is a body lock from a “reverse grip” 2:39 - this a really just a high amplitude gut wrench. You can often see this happen when opponents try to defend a takedown by keeping a “quad pod” 5:03 - belly to back suplex. The holy grail of all wrestling. No move is more impressive. 7:48 - Arm throw 8:19 - Arm spin 9:43 - headlock or head and arm throw (just a name difference) Would love to talk about this with you!

Easily one of my favorite videos Chadi. Thank you. I know it seems like a "muscle" sport, but that is a mind trick...illusion. Greco is all technique. Just like judo. Using your hips to get under their center or using their own force. Even the greco reverse bodylock from par terre. Technique, not strength. (of course on a high level with great stakes, whether it's judo, wrestling or BJJ...you try to enhance all of your attributes) Trying to catch up on all of the wrestling videos. You've done such a great job with these and is exactly the right person to do it. You have the knowledge, experience, as unbias as you can(you are human) and curiosity. Love the grips the gi affords. The range and footwork is strange still but I can't wait to get comfortable with it. The gi makes gripping less immediate but more secure. Wish I'd started when I was younger.it would've helped my wrestling a lot

Coming up as a white belt in Brazilian Jiu-jitsu, I received little instruction on the clinch. My coach, who has been wrestling for 20 years, volunteered to work Greco with me after class. An older Purple Belt and freestyle wrestling coach saw us one evening and said, "What is this? Judo without the gi?" 😂 Since that day I saw the similarities. Clinch is now one of my strengths. @leenvdsteeg8147
@leenvdsteeg8147 3 жыл бұрын
@@vybinn1805 In a sporting context, I would say Bjj. If your talking strictly self defense, judo is better than bjj simply because judo teaches you to throw the other person and stay standing yourself. You never want to go to the ground willingly in a self defense situation, as most bjj schools focus on. most self defense situations are actually spend most of the time in clinching range. Guess what judo focusses on 80 percent of the time: Clinching range, but unlike freestyle or greco where they focus on under/overhooks and collar ties, judo teaches you to make use of a person's clothing by way of the gi. Guess what most people will be wearing in a self defense situation: clothing. if the fight does go to the ground, in a self defense situation, Bjj starts doing way to complicated stuff past blue belt. Ask any of the Gracies when they were still challenging people, most fights back then against unpredictable opponents where won with basic stuff: Kimura, straight armlock, guillotine, rear naked, (back) mount. Exactly the stuff they focus on in judo ne waza. Also, if your in security or law enforcement, nothing discourages a would be assailant more than being thrown on his ass. A far better strategy than rolling on the floor with him, especially if there are weapons or multiple assailants involved I think Geoff Thompson said it best: " judo is the martial arts world best kept secret"

I can't do a complete Suplex, so the Ura Nage is my go to move, I need that leg lift, and it's more practical in my opinion anyways. I think an interesting throw is the Sukui Nage or Scooping Throw, because it's devastating as all hell if pulled off. I've only competed in four Judo competitions and one Greco Roman Wrestling tournament, but I did not use the move, cus idk it just didn't come up, I'm too used to just going for Harai O' Goshi or Body Drags, but I heard it was banned from Judo, is that true? Understand that I do primarily Jiu Jitsu, but my coaches were wrestlers in highschool who forces their students to refrain from pulling guard. So I'm not like 100% sure about the rules of Judo. I did do a Sukui Nage in the dojo twice, got in trouble tho, so now I'm wondering if it's banned from Judo Competitions, I'd totally understand why it is if it is tho.

I have never trained in Greco. However while training in Catch; there are some Greco moves, throws. What I like in Judo is that you can and are allowed to use your legs. While sparring in Karate, I use a lot of sweeps against my sparring partners. Using your legs allows you to use less strength as their is alot of technique involved. In Greco the technique looks like it involves more strength. I will add that I stopped using Judo Gi many years ago. I'm able to do various throws with out a Gi.

Greco-Roman Wrestling never allowed grabs below the waist since first described by Platon in the Republic as Orthopale (upright wrestling) then reintroduced into popularity in France. The rationale is in fighting melee especially when weapons, armor, and kit are involved it's best to stay upright and slam the foe quickly then get a weapon out to kill them or strangle them. Next time you get a chance to wrestle or grapple get a ruck sack or weighted vest and helmet and spar with them on especially try it with stickgrappling. Also Platon Laws 796a-b.

Crazy how he compares a Wrestling Head and Arm to WWE, far from it. Judo is good Martial Art, but Wrestling is a whole different animal. I competed in both. Many years ago when I was a kid the rules had to be changed because Wrestler’s were being so successful with their double legs. Knowing Greco-Roman Wrestling as kid taking away a double leg didn’t matter, by closing the gap my throws became pretty easy. For those who have not taken Judo or Wrestling, you’re missing out, Judo is an awesome martial art again, but Wrestling is Wrestling. They’re both a must try.

I don't mean to nitpick, but some of the armthows that you showed in wrestling were actually "arm spins," which is slightly different. In Greco an Armthrow is much more similar to ippon saenagi (or seoi-otoshi as you point out is different). However, an armspin you get your hips all the way to the outside and try to place your opponents arm in an rnc position around your neck (which is obviously bad in judo) and then just perform a shoulder roll. The difference between an armspin and an armthrow in wrestling is very subtle as the difference between saenagi and seoi-otoshi.

What annoys me with alot of wrestlers and MMA fighters using wrestling, is that they either use the legs or the back for throws. The proper technique is using your hips and displacing your opponents centre of gravity. Almost no effort at all. And totally allowed in Greco Roman.

Can you spot the speed and strength difference between the wrestlers and judo players? Wrestlers don't have the advantage to get a strong grip from a loose collar or sleeve. They have to get strong and fast to be able to grip the other wrestlers arm or torso. Judo is a tough sport but just look at the athleticism of wrestlers. Fast twitch muscle fibres at work.

Judokas should cross-train "greco-roman" wrestling, and vice-versa, but judokas would benefit more in learning to clinch and throw without the grip of the gi, and adapt judo throwing techniques to a more realistic, or at least universal form of wrestling, that is without the gi, and only your opponent's body and limbs to grapple them.

Had an argument (and it was an actual argument) with a freestyle wrestler regarding the ability of Judokas to execute the same throws no gi against a freestyle wrestler with their lower position. He stands by the idea that most judoka would get taken down by freestyle wrestlers due to position, I disagreed and responded with "that's a blanket statement and you cant make a hypothetical statement off that because there are some very strong and talented judoka out there who can execute these same throws very effectively against seasoned wrestlers" I loved this particular video because i like to see the carryover of Judo no gi, which is essentially a variation of Greco Roman wrestling which I practice and love. Lol this wrestler I argued with also dislikes Greco, cant fix stupid. Thanks for the video Chadi

That was a very well done comparison between to great martial arts. It's just that the throws in greco-roman you exhibit, almost never happens. It's clinch-clinch-clinch, then partaire and mabe points for rolling, and that's it. I am sorry to say, but Greco-Roman has become extremely boring. And Freestyle wrestling isn't much better. They just shoot for a single or double leg, like it is the only thing they know.

Ireallly like this video, but I would however like to dispute the seoi nage part. The wording to be exact. In my opinion it's not that we judokas need more space to execute it, beacause I've seen the wrestling style seoi in judo a lot,hat is different in my opinion is the way it's taught. The classical way they teach you seoi at first in judo is definetly the way that you need space, but once you go into randori or shiai you start using both versions, if not the wrestling one a bit more. At least from my experience.
@Chadi

Yeah it can be both in judo, but if we were to judge from kuzushi/tsukuri/kake then ippon seoi nage needs space to be executed in judo but it can be both definitely.
