I have no experience in wrestling and very very little Judo experience. Just a Blue belt in BJJ while in school and non-competitive middle age boxing. I totally lack the standup. An outsider looking at competition and instructionals, wrestlers have this incremental chain wrestling to achieve small advantages using a wider variety of moves, but it achieves small steps towards hitting a move, Judoka is much more specialist and using timing to hit 1 or 2 big moves. If you trying to be a MMA minimalist it seems double/single/some takedown from the clinch/bodylock is essential, you can learn more but it takes effort to learn those. In Judo it seems the big man moves are ostogari, shorter guys use Seonage and Taitoshi. Everyone can use uchimata and leg/foot attacks ouchigari etc.

If you want a better standing game I'd recommend Judo and Boxing(or Muay Thai) as the strikes open an opponent for throws. Smaller people have a lower center of gravity which makes throws much better, plus shooting for the legs in a street fight is risky business. Edit: realised this video is aimed at a controlled environment so my bad 😂

@@LibertarianGalt My comment was a little bit off topic, I just wanna see if my observations are in line with what real wrestlers or Judokas think since I am only a spectator. If it's MMA and you are a shorter built fighter, should you begin your base with Judo or Wrestling? my minimalist answer is wrestling in my opinion. The single and double as Hong said (from one Hong to another) Look at Damien Maia and Ben Askren who really have to go to the ground just to survive. they have to use Single and double, it's reliable they don't have a better way. Plus you can pick up some Greco which is great when mixed with standup. There are other Judokas like Ronda Rousey who can toss you at will, but you gotta learn to do it without the gi, I think it's elite level stuff, where as even Maia could still get you to the ground with a shoot or pull a half guard and sweep you.

I was thinking for self defence but are we talking in a controlled environment where grappler v grapper or MMA free for all or just no ref free for all? Judo used to teach takedown defence but I think has mainly dropped it due to olympic rule changes but older Judoka still can stop the double legs somewhat effectively.

Im a striker, thats dabbled in grappling so feel free to throw my opinion out, but it seems to me that wrestling is only better against a taller opponent. But the op said bigger which to me implies heavier and possibly taller. In that case id argue judo is better. For the less experienced grappler hitting a hip throw, uchi mata, or even sacrifice throw is much easier on a bigger guy than simply trying to blast double him. This is because at the end of the day, it doesnt matter how explosive u r, trying to tackle ur way through too much mass just isnt efficient. Can it be done? Sure, but it isnt ideal. Whereas with judo throws kuzushi is always, ideally, an element, which means the smaller fighter wouldnt have to rely on strength where the larger fighter would easily have the advantage. Could be wrong on my theory though, so grapplers feel free to weigh in.

I think a lot of people dont understand how massive of an overlap ther is between judo and wrestling. I almost feel as if Judo isnt as complete of a system as wrestling because the lack of shots for takedowns and the lack of ground grappling.

I haven't watched the video, but my opinion is wrestling. Reason is judo is a standing art that attacks high; wrestling has attacks that come in low.
