Totally agree with this. I learned both Boxing and Kickboxing (Sanda) before I got into Judo and found that there's a VERY strong connection between those skills. Of course, in a street fight I also pull from Combatives (Level 1 instructor) and Japanese Jujitsu (black belt) because those skills translate well to the street.

If I HAD to choose, I would choose Judo over Boxing but why choose? I would say learn boxing basics and go all in on JUDO standing AND Ground work....that is more than enough to defend yourself

Train mma. You need at least a few months of understanding that just rushing in for (what is essentially) a hug is completely ineffective. You need to learn how to slip, throw a few punches to distract the opponent, and learn how to do lower body takedowns (single leg, double leg). also, you just need to get used to being kicked and punched and not lose your shit. practice and a lot of sparring.
@user-qn6fw8fg4b Жыл бұрын
? you dont just 'train mma', mma is MIXED martial arts, which means that if you dont know anything, you are mixing nothing / garbage with other garbage. Learn something first, boxing, wrestling, anything like that, THEN cross train, THEN do MMA to learn how to mix the skills

Hi, thankyou very much for the content, what is your opinion on comparing muay thai clinh work vs judo clinch work? do you think one is more helpful in a street fight over the other, or do you think you can comibnethem? I think combat sambo fighters kind of combinethem. thankyou
@xjoshsaucex Жыл бұрын
Thai fighter's adjusted their style when judo fighter's challenged them way back in the day, principals are the same, judo gets deeper in grips and throws, trips, takedowns etc.. muay thai has deeper striking knowledge
@OGFITNESS Жыл бұрын
In Judo because we have the gi we dont focus on clinching all that much, but because our balance and understanding if body mechanic is so advanced we can easily work in the clinch, but remember that they’re is no striking in Judo, muay thai clinch work would be more appropriate for the streets, and yes absolutely you can and should combine them.

This topic brings up the “90% of fights end up on the ground” stat. Which I do question. First who is going around with a clip board collecting data on a suitable sized cross section of fights to make a statistically viable prediction? ( my hunch it a police stat, who’s intention is to get to ground to control the person being arrested, they would also document the data) Secondly, after training bjj (and leg sweeping in KB) it’s actually quite difficult to get someone to the ground who is resisting. (There are plenty of YT videos of police, 2 or 3 on 1 getting scum bags to the ground to arrest them) Third : I’ve been i a few fights/scuffles myself and witnessed a hell of a lot more and never seen a single one go to ground. Ok only my own personal straw poll, but given to 90% stat and the number of fights I’ve seen I would thought I would have recalled at least 1 go to the ground! (My comment has gone on a lot longer than I intended, but i started to enjoy my mini rant) anyways- a fight is a great big 30 seconds of violent chaos - grappling is very effective, same with kicking, but setting up a take down (or kick) is essential, fight start standing with strikes exchanging. Train a striking art so u can use grappling skills. - WHICH IS WHAT HAS JUST BEEN SAID IN VIDEO, SO IVE JUST WASTED THE LAST 10 mins OF MY LIFE TYPING THIS CRAP OUT 😂😂😂
@OGFITNESS Жыл бұрын
Hahaha, nah you bring up some interesting points, its true that not enough people question that 90% shit, it might be just a Gracie marketing tactic, i think two guys who cant fight will flail their arms around then clinch up and fall to the ground together happens but when you have guys who have a sens of fighting they keep it standing. Now that i think about it 99 percent of my fights stayed standing 😂. Whats KB by the way?
@jezwarren-clarke2471 Жыл бұрын

Indeed, we tend believe what we want to believe without the hard evidence to back it up. There is always cherry picking and confirmation bias amongst both grapplers and strikers who believe one is superior than the other, for example, rules based competitions which tend to favour the grappler. On the street, which is the real litmus test, it is a vastly different arena and there are many factors that decide the outcome. Never, ever underestimate a good boxer who knows how to approach and deal with a grappler before it goes to the ground. And even when you do go to the ground, it is far from over. The moment a grappler grabs or tries to grab you he's taken away four of him most lethal weapons, namely, his hands (including fists, palms, knife hand and single digits) and elbows. I am not biased towards striking as cross train in both striking and grappling like most fighters, but I do know a flawed argument when I see one. Sure, a lot of fights do end up on the ground, especially amongst inexperienced brawlers which is what most people who get involved in street fights are, but there are several reasons why they do other than a lack of grappling ability, e.g. tripping over themselves, multiple attackers, etc. The funny thing is, more and more these days, I see judo and BJJ guys wanting to learn some boxing (e.g. Shintaro Higashi's series of videos on his TY channel) for the same reason as a striker who wants to some grappling - not to beat them at their own game which will only get their arse kicked, but to understand what they are up against and to learn some strategies that will help them circumvent their deficiencies. Like they say, know thy enemy".

I started working the doors in Baltimore in 1988. I retired again…last month. I have seen, and stopped, hundreds of fights. I have never seen Judo or wrestling win bar fights, either inside of the bars or outside in the parking lots. We used grappling to stop the fights and drag them outside. Train in boxing, focusing on the Philly shell along with slipping, weaving, rolling etc., to avoid getting hit clean and knocked out in the first few seconds, because after the useless posturing, the punches will be coming. Close the distance, tie him up, and bar staff will do the rest. As a result, you will not get arrested, and because he is throwing all the punches, you may even be able to stay and enjoy the rest of your night. Your adversary will look like a total fool, and you will look fantastic. You will get compliments all night and leave with the girl. It will be a very Good night!

@OGFITNESS Yeah, Bjj is expensive, man. I know you have done a video on the cost of bjj. My first bjj gym I trained at was New Zealand, $15 dollars a week. You could train all you want . Monday to Friday, six classes a week. More if you wanted to train with the competition team in the morning's. Friday night was two hours of straight rolling. When I moved cities and saw the prices 👀 I couldn't believe how expensive bjj really is. Judo is very reliably priced in New Zealand 🇳🇿 . Same as wrestling, but it's not that popular .

I dont agree at all, ive seen Judo work so many times in real life altercations, the fact that you start standing and your able to do randori at 100% really translates well into a streetfight. Of course its good to be able to box? but like why "excuse my language" no shit it helps? but it would also help if you were 7'1 tall and 300lbs. But i dont thing that it takes away from the fact that judo is really efficient in real life situations, and really much so in colder climates, where people are wearing big heavy jackets
