There are moves in Judo that are effective without the Gi. For example your basic Hip throw, which is like Harai or Uchimata but without the necessary leg sweep. Then you can transition into an arm bar (also a good Judo move not requiring a Gi).

yes lots of moves that were taught to the gracie and credited as bjj techniques such as the arm bar originally came from judo (kind of). these techniques are very effective. the goshin jutsu has also improved my fighting skills and mixes well with a kempo backround guy like myself. so i feel as though my judo training has added alot to my fighting arsenal now that i am at the orange-green belt level.

i hated ISN until two pointers were given to me by a friend. 1 u have to lock up his arm so his bicep is against your should tight enough that he cant get it back and 2 as you throw turn your head another 80 or 90 degrees instead of looking straight ahead. hope this helps.

+justaleafinthewind # I was thinking exactly same and then I saw your comment afterwords. This vid is one of the best demonstrations of Judo basics what I have ever seen. I trained judo at age of 10-12 in late seventies, and if I have had this good examples available...If someone would train all this basics properly it would be enough for most of the trainers for life. The "kumikata" is actually "The judo" everything else is just application for that. I wish we would have trained that more, much more -> but hey, there is aikido for that if your sensei is incapable for real judo, but prefers wrestling ;)....I got my yellow belt, and three red stripes, and one injured elbow in competition, and some good friends too. It was worth of it.

yeah, much nostalgia, wish i'd continued training, and i too got various injuries to the point where i was leaving bloody hand prints on the gym walls XDDD but it was totally fun Riku Nevalainen

one thing i dont see is ppl using the joint locks that i learned in judo. without a gi (in a street fight or against my muay thai friends) i use wrestling tricks or joints locks to set up my throws and i can pull of any throw ive learned so far for my orange belt exam. but admittedly, i took alot of these standing "locks" (as i call them) from sambo or jjj videos or from my wrestliung training.

VERY helpful but I can't understand the language. It's good anyway 'cos it shows clearly what a yellow belt should know. It varies from place to place but the majority is unchanged. Mainly the way one executes the techniques and all that.

i was recently the victim of a random assault at the local bar which is a hangout for everyone in my neighborhood. i had been training judo earlier that day and defended myself perfectly, against the man who was 100 lbs heavier than me, much stronger (and in better shape) than me both standing and on the ground. hes lucky im a nice guy and didn't decide to add in the striking part. Judo is not for mma but that does not make it effective. oh ya, ive also thrown mma guys.

Making general statements like "Judo is not effective for mma" is the mark of a layman. Judo is effective for anything in real life. Maybe you just suck at judo.

If this is a yellow belt syllabis it does not have to be executed at that level, not by a dan grade!nice vid but technique is poor!Sorry. DO NOT CROSS LEGS IN Mae mawari ukemi!.DO NOT bend ur knees in Ushiro ukemi! Apply KUZUSHI before throws!Learn the difference between Osoto OTOSHI and Osoto GAKE (shown)! Avoid typical mistake in Kesa gatame to bend forward and "kiss uke's shoulder"!!No pressure on his chest whatsoever that way,no control, and easy escape ,as a consequence! ect,act...

Judo is effective for MMA, though. Personally, I train MMA and BJJ, and get thrown a lot whenever I roll with my Judoka friends. If you go into an MMA fight with JUST Judo, you'll probably die (not literally), but it's a good thing to add to any MMA game.
