They were a foil for Rachel's parents. They showed that couples that age could be very much in love and happy, playful and still together. Provided balance to the show.
@rebecca85252 жыл бұрын
Out of all the parents on the show, the Gellars were the only ones who stayed together and still loved each other. Rachel’s parents divorced. Chandler’s parents divorced. Phoebe’s father left her mother for another woman and then left the other woman for a third woman. Joey’s parents are still together, but his dad cheats on his mom and she knows it but won’t get divorced. Mike’s parents are still together but they don’t really count because he wasn’t a main character.

The people who moan and make it a problem that Ben or Emma haven't been shown a lot on Friends are idiots who don't understand how the TV or movie world works, especially in sitcoms, which always have a core cast that episodes focus on. First thing - this simply wasn't a show about children. Ben and Carol (and later Emma) were background characters, only gues-stars from the START!! So it's obvious, the relationship between Ross/Ben or Ross/Carol happened mostly off-screen just as the relationship between Rachel and Emma, Emma/Ben or Rachel and her parents, or any of the 'Friends' with their relatives (Joey and his sisters, etc). Because the show was mainly about the six of main friends only. How hard is it to understand?! Secondly, anyone from the film industry would tell you, that filming with kids is hard as it is, even more so with very little ones, it rarely happens, it's too risky and complicated. This is why Ben was rarely there, in the episodes. They showed him 3 times in the beginning, 2 when he grew up a little, and maybe 2 times when he was older. So the complaints that he 'suddenly' disappear from the show are simply not based on facts because Ben was rarely there from the start. They didn't forget to develop Ben - they did. They showed him few times and they showed Ross loved him very much and was a great father, in the episodes Ben was in ( like the one with Holiday Armadillo or in the one when Ross had to leave Ben with Joey and Chandler- how he was worried and for a good reason, as Joey and Chandler were terrible guardians and lost Ben on the bus, or the episode when Ross and Phoebe talk about Ben going to school with Sting kid, etc). But mostly their relationship happened off-screen because it simply wasn't a show about children, kids were background characters on this show and for a good reason. But especially during later seasons, it also could be, that the actor who played older Ben wasn't available later! Anyone with two brain cells, gets it.
