Wow, I've always loved Judy Collins's music. I never knew she suffered with alcoholism too. This is encouraging for me.

I suffer from depression, but never had a drinking problem, for which I an very grateful. This lady is amazing ! I knew that her son died, but not that she suffered with the problems that she discusses. She is so important, more than her music, her life experiences that are so normal to life and her way of expressing them! Thank You for the upload.

There is Jesus. Without Him there is a sense of futility and despair. Life beats you in the end. But with Jesus there is a future and a hope, a total change in one's identity. I would not have made it passed 20, but I am now 64. Life is not always wonderful, but in the midst of dissapointments and darkness, there is a light that Shines that the darkness cannot extinguish ever..

> Anybody with any kind of an addiction to alcohol, cigarettes or drugs should read all of Allan Carr's books on cigarette addiction, alcohol addiction and drug addiction. Briefly what the books do is remove all the subtle brainwashing people have been subjected to by big cigarette companies, drinks companies and dare I say people who make billions from drug addiction. I was an addicted cigarette smoker for over thirty years and I haven't smoker ONE cigarette after reading his book on smoking addiction. And I've had no withdrawals, or any cravings of any kind and definitely no desire to ever smoke again. Here's one example from that book - What's the last request from any prisoner facing a firing squad in any movie that's ever been made - yeah you guessed it, it's a cigarette of course. And who owns practically all of the movie making companies, Yeah you guessed it again, it's the cigarette companies of course, God bless.

I, too, am a long term person in sobriety and will have 21 years of continuous sobriety. It is ok to joke about one's self, but it is not ok for others to place that label on you. In Ireland, AA is called, "America's gift to Ireland" because so many people there have found recovery there. I am allergic to alcohol. My body will not tolerate it. And I am Scotch-Irish. Genetics? I don't know. I just know I have worked hard to stay sober and find peace and laughter.

Rejoicing in loss is very difficult for some. Workout, plenty of sleep, eat right... all good advice. But all artists struggle with depression. Part of the creative process. Demons? 'Don't kill them all' ??? What a strange philosophy. All good gifts come down from the Father of Heavenly Lights - The Most High God - not from demons. At 65 yrs. of age she is still remarkable. Thanks for sharing this.

Yeah but you had the money to get into those treatment centers...Depression sucks but when u r depressed cause you cant pay the bills or provide for your children. When its circumstances that cause the depression you just have no idea but everything you have said is good but it is much harder when you are poor. Sucks, Maybe I am just pessimistic. I love your songs though they make me feel like someone else shares my pain and suffering. Almost on the line of blues music. Thank you.

You are right and this was overlooked during her interview. Eating well, exercising, friends, sleeping. She did all of those things throughout her life, yet she was still was depressed and an alcoholic. She sort of skirted the claw that drags you into depression's real, raging depths. Maybe she has not experienced it the way others do. Maybe she is naturally buoyant and blessed with a strong frame built by a supportive family ... And of course, the fortune of having fans remind you every day you've got somebody in your corner no matter what. From my experience, it makes you unable to exercise, socialize, sleep, or eat. Adding poverty to the equation makes the anchor heavier in ways not all can imagine. My only advice to you is to take comfort where you can find it, go one day a time, and trudge on in this life for as long as you can. Don't give up. Don't let go.

Angel, those of us who have experienced the effects of alcoholism and the effects of other mind altering chemicals (including me) are experts at finding reasons to not work a program of recovery. I think that your comment, "Yeah but you had the money to get into those treatment centers," is a great example, is another justification of not doing what Judy Collins is doing: doing her work, her program of recovery. Ms. Collins has not gotten to her place in recovery via her money and her "successes," financially. She's NOT become who she is today via her money-wealth. She's gotten to her positive, personal, present place in life via the wealth that has absolutely NOTHING to do with physical and external things. I find it very, very interesting that we, somehow, manage to obtain what's our highest priority. We cannot get into treatment centers but we always find the "wealth" to get mind altering chemicals. Don't you agree?

Well, she actually lost custody of her son Clark, when Clark was just a kid (maybe 5 or 6 years old). Later, as an adult, Clark committed suicide. So sad. Check out her autobiographies. They're fantastic.
