You spoke of how she really was getting into this song. As someone else posted, she was good friends with JFK and she was was devastated when he was assassinated in November of 1963. She wanted to sing this song as a tribute to him but the CBS executives didn’t want her to sing it because they thought it would be too political. The taped show was shown on December 13, 1963 and according to her youngest daughter, Lorna Luft, Judy had said, “This is for you Jack” but the powers that be at CBS edited that out. But, the studio audience and the people who watched it in their homes knew who she was singing it for. You can see the fire in her eyes as she sings most of it and the softness as she seems to almost want to cry during the verse about the lilies. She poured every ounce of her heart and soul into this performance and it shows.

There are a lot of negative comments being directed at this poster. He's reacting spontaneously to a person he hasn't heard before. I'm in love with Judy Garland but I'm not going to hate on him for saying her last name wrong. The vast majority of people born after 1980, are not familiar with her. It's a fact, no matter that she was once one of the biggest superstars in the world. What he got right is how GREAT her voice is and he was very SINCERE in his appreciation. I applaud any young person who's exploring music outside of their generation.

Yes, as someone who grew up knowing who she was and has always believed she was the possessor of one of THE most amazing collection of God-given talent in the 20th century; I was also first surprised (as I frequently am these days) that he did not know much about her. od that However, I am THRILLLED and grateful to GOD that Chef has discovered her and I hope he continues to look into her rich history of performances. She had a very hard life that was basically a set up for disaster since childhood. I hope many more young people come to appreciate and understand the phenomenon that she was and the issues that can come from child exploitation and how "Hollywood", etc. chews people up.

Grayland??? This is not a “soundtrack”, it’s a live, in-studio orchestra! This was the 60s. A tribute to Kennedy, her friend, who was just assassinated. Judy, Sinatra, Nat King Cole n John Lennon were the most recognizable voices of the 20th century. Few things equal the heft of this clip!

At the end of her performance of this song, Judy Garland looked at the screen and said "That was for you, Jack." (her good friend JFK who was killed that week). The idiots heads of CBS cut that moment from the telecast.

Same here. Of course we sang the kid's version outside of school ... Glory glory hallelujah, teacher hit me with a ruler, etc... As an adult the kid lyrics sound awful but we loved our teachers and those were simpler times for kids in the early 70s so it was just silly. We also sang 'My Country Tis of Thee' before the pledge of allegiance.
