Judy. The greatest of the greats. I cannot listen to that voice without having goosebumps. And MMISL is my favorite movie of all time. Sheer perfection. ❤

Oscar was making a joke, and a feeble one at that, Judy was renowned for her vibrato.

When you talk about how she slides into the song, I think you might be talking about the fact that her singing voice and speaking voice were identical. It sets her apart from other singing actresses. Only the best have that quality in their performances. Another thing about Judy Garland is that her lip-synching is unparalleled. I think that contributes to the fluidity of her performances. Sometimes people think she was ruled by her temperament and emotions, but I think she was a very disciplined actress and singer who knew exactly what she wanted and got it almost all the time.

Judy looked and sounded so lovely in this film. It is clear the she was filmed with love by her soon-to-be husband Vincente Minnelli. You right, her vibrato is stunning and adding it to her rich contralto voice made her unique. Her singing really touched the heart. So many stars from that era are now forgotten, but never Judy. What a perfect clip for the festive season😊

I just watched this movie a couple of days ago. It's a must-see each holiday season. That scene is so emotionally heart-wrenching. This song gets to me every time, especially as I get older.

I love this reaction! I'm a big Judy fan myself. Looking forward to communicating her birthday on Monday. If you haven't already, I would love to have you react to On the Atchison, Topeka and the Santa Fe, with the prelude included. What a lovely trip, I'm feeling so fresh and alive... Love you!

Excellent reaction. Thanks for the insight into how the song came about. I always felt that in addition to trying to cheer her sister up, she was also trying to talk herself into having a merry Christmas.

So true!!!!! That is somthing I didnt take into consideration, because I automatically thought Esther took on the "mama/Big sister" role in that moment to help her sister while also putting her own fears about leaving St.Louis to the side to support Tootie. Great Observation!!!!! Happy Holidays!!!!!!!

Thanks for the details of the history behind the change of the lyrics. She was right to speak up and point out the major flaw in the original lines of the song. I love this Christmas song and hearing it is an emotional experience for me.

Another wonderful and insightful reaction. You picked the perfect selection for Christmas. Your comments about her ability to portray the meaning and emotion of songs are so true. When you were talking about not being able to think of anyone else who could match her ability in that regard, I immediately thought of Barbra Streisand, but then you said without looking stagey, and I had to admit that compared to Judy, Barbra's dramatic portrayals can be a bit stagey whereas Judy's approach is more natural and more vulnerable. Wishing you a Merry Little Christmas and a Happy Big New Year!

short history of the song. Written for the Story of Meet Me in St. Louis movie. Judy sang it to her niece in the story regarding having to move to New York City because father changed jobs or w something. In 1957, when Frank Sinatra approached Martin to record the song, he asked him to revise the lyrics to promote more positive themes; he particularly pointed out the line "until then we'll have to muddle through somehow," saying "the name of my album is A Jolly Christmas. Do you think you could jolly up that line for me?"[10] Martin's revised lyric was "hang a shining star upon the highest bough."

Anything by Garland is worth listening to, and this is a special song from a special movie, and she sings it well and it has a strong nostalgic feel being associated with her and the movie - this beautiful song is one of the best Christmas songs ever, and has been recorded by hundreds of singers over the years - by far the very best version was sung by Karen Carpenter on the Carpenters' 1978 album "Christmas Portrait" - her version is one of her greatest vocal performances (which is saying a whole hell of a lot) and set a new (untouchable) standard for the song's delivery, to the extent that she now owns it...for those who wish to hear this gem here it is: kzbin.info/www/bejne/embUaouZbcSEftU
