She might have been extremely nervous about singing this song, but she makes it seem so effortless, and confident!

The first opening song for the Judy Garland Show with Mickey Rooney and the network execs, Judy was red hot during this show! Sheer greatness!

I hadn't really thought about it but I recently discovered that there is a mountain of Judy Garland recordings that have not yet been released. So many archival interviews radio broadcasts etc. what a treasure and a gift to the whole world.....

From her TV show. The only tapes of the show survived the worst of conditions after several years of being"missing." Thak God we have this record of Judy Garland at her very best - no one compares.

Unique. That's the best word I can come up to describe Garland. There was absolutely no one like her, even in childhood. And there were many child stars of that time.

I remember hearing a recorded 1943 radio broadcast of Judy singing the Kurt Weill / Ira Gershwin song 'This is New'. I would think that only a mature singer could put this song over. But Judy, in full voice, sang it beautifully with all its subtle resonances of someone who had already lived a rich and complicated life. She was only about 22 at the time.

I think she swings the hell out of this. Her phrasing is excellent. I honestly don't think Miles Davis nor Sonny Rollins could have played the melody better.

M White Garland’s propensity as a performer was within the swing/jazz tradition, which her early work attests to. Later in her career her style of singing was dictated by MGM and record producers toward a more easy-listening genre. However, within her concert performances (and her tv series) she certainly displayed her inherent abilities as an artist who could improvise a la jazz. She could also ‘do’ blues when a song demanded it. She deserves the recognition as one of the best versatile singers of the 20th century, if not of all time. Oh, and add rock’n’roll into the mix with her physicality on stage, wrapping the cord of her mic over her shoulder. An inspiration, I wonder, for the likes of Mick Jagger!?

She was reportedly really nervous (as this was her opening number on the debut show), but it sure doesn't show. What a pro!

A drink or six will do that for you--Judy's usual solution. But she's not in good voice here.

I have to give props to whoever did the arrangements for Judy's television show they are superb. This song is from the early 30s and it's original song is quite different.

This song was arranged by Mel Torme who was hired to do special arrangements for her on her show. I had a major falling-out and it didn't end well

john mathews Mel Torme wrote a sort of trashy book about the whole thing. I forget what it’s called but you can Google it. I love the way he sings, but my opinion of him sank after reading the book.

@@jmathewsrph72 technically mel was hired as her special materials arranger, but was too busy chasing skirts to really get too much work done. The person who is responsible for many of the musical arrangements on Judy's show was none other than Mort Lindsey. When mel did write for Judy, it seemed more sorted for him than her, even though Judy was to sing it.

(Cont'd) It's said that Garland was a quick study. Show her something once in dance and she's on it. Interestingly enough, she complemented both Astaire and Kelly in dance. Never competing with them, mind you. Just complementing them. I came along just at the right time to appreciate her from childhood on into adulthood.

You can have people that are supposed to be "concurrents" which actually have nothing but respect for each other, just like Rocky and his opponent in the movies (where they end up best friends). In real life, it would be like Frank Sinatra and Bing Crosby, the Beatles and the Stones, Blur and Oasis…
