Most amazing competitive community is for Blood bowl. Whether solo or squad based. So many tournaments every weekend from 12-2000 ppl (Blood bowl World Cup). Results organized by a non-GW community. All Editions GW Models along with conversions, non-GW models allowed. And the squad jerseys are next level. Painting and dioramas next level. Plus so many charities involved. My Florida BB community organized a charity raffle of miniatures and tournament swag for me when I was sick. Just next level amazing.

UK based and can't agree more. There is a good blend of competitive and there for the experience folks, Socially they tend to be good and especially some of the larger events like UKTC in York or Thrudbowl will see folk travel from all corners to attend. I would love to see the JUGGZ crew attend one and see their thoughts on it. I have also seen events do intro challenges like "Best new Comer", "Best Young Player" or "Top Performing against the organising league". It is also traditional for there to be a Stunty cup for those who chose to use the traditionally weaker races (Goblins, Halflings, etc), Most Touchdowns and Most Casualties so even if you aren't competing for the top prize it is still possible to be win something.

I can understand both sides, but I also remember playing a tournament (back in the days if 4th edition) where I had 140 odd model Tyranid army, playing against a 80 model Guard Army. 3 hours play time, we played 3 turns, my play time being maybe 45 minutes. Because he slow played so, so much, most of my army didn't reach him, so I lost on points which he scored early with a shooting army. The Tournament organiser came up to me afterwards with my score sheet, questioning why I gave him a 0 for sports (still hard sports scores at the time), and gave the above explanation. Later on, I walked passed him playing a game with one of our other notoriously slow players, swear to god, time was moving backwards on that table. On the other hand, I've played games of Warmachine in tournaments where we ditched the clock halfway as we were both playing quickly, is was more trouble than its worth for that player. All they're really there to do is make sure there is no extreme unbalance of playtime.

I love Robs comment about leadership in gaming communities. A couple of years back I was the community leader for SW Legion in my little city, and one of our locals started to get a rep - both locally and on TTS - as an un-fun opponent. I had to be the adult and have a quiet word - just telling him the feedback that was floating around and letting him no. He really took it to heart, and literally won "best sport" at that event i talked to him at (while still coming 2nd overall, not an easy combo!). It was definitely a growth point for me - giving someone honest feedback and seeing immediate personal growth and behavioural change. Just amazing.

I went to boarding school and yes, I was traumatized. As a Novi, you are not allowed to see your parents for the first term. Then, you have to ask permission to see them for a few hours on a Sunday (school is 6 days a week plus chapel every morning including Sunday). I started boarding at prep school when I was nine. So from 9 until I was 18 I only saw my parents in the school holidays. Definitely scarred me. Even in the holidays they worked so I rarely saw them. Many times when they were supposed to pick me up at the end of term, they forgot, so didn’t. That was embarrassing.

To make this happen they sent me to private boarding school and both worked really hard to afford it, so I didn’t see much of them even in the holidays. It’s just about what they chose to prioritize. As it turned out, I am happily married, have my own business, live in California , have a lovely home with a pool, basketball court and a guest house where I get to play D&D, Warhammer and paint minis. Sadly, I would give it all up to have spent more time with my parents and three sisters.

When I got back into the hobby at the start of tenth I was really suffering with my social anxiety, but I pushed myself to go to events cause I always loved tournaments back in 7th edition. Since the start of tenth I've been to 10 events varying from RTTs, GTs and team events. I found at the last one I went to I knew half the players there and I got to play with 5 players I hadn't played with before and now I'm looking forward to playing them again in the future. Events have done wonders for my hobby and my anxiety, getting myself out there, meeting new people, with a fully painted army. I met Rob at Warhammer fest and we had an awesome chat about all things warhammer. I'm really keen on changing the outlook people have of "competitive" players as a derogatory term as I'm always met with the rebuttal "I only play for fun" because as we all know, we only go to events to be miserable for two days and then do it all again the next weekend. We all play for fun, sometimes our fun is in different ways. Being an arsehole isn't the same as being a competitive player. I've met plenty of arsehole narrative players. Can't wait to watch Louise's video on the AoS worlds! Just got into AoS myself and can't wait to go to an event

Sharpe is also one of those rare instances where the adaptation is just as good as the novels. I find myself quoting both regularly. While I agree that we shouldn't stigmatize competitive players I do think it is fair game to give them a little (light hearted) ribbing when they bring that attitude to a casual environment. At least that is how my gaming/friend groups have always treated each other. Great discussion. Thanks for sharing!

Louise's 'Worlds' video was an absolute treat. I went to a local RTT for 3rd with a Sylvaneth army that definitely was not going to be functional having NEVER PLAYED A GAME BEFORE and made more than 3 more friends and it was a total hoot. Everyone was incredibly inviting and did everything they could to help me learn what was going on, even after I introduced myself as "Hi I'm Zak, this is my first time playing AoS". It was great. I also found out that 1 game of AoS in a day was enough for me and Sylvaneth required WAY more dedication than I was able to give (it's a very meticulous army to play well). But I'm super excited to find a game of 4th to play with my Kruleboyz, who will hopefully be much less intricate as the game goes.

The discussion around 'Fluff' is so interesting because I once interviewed for a role at GW and; Peachy was one of the interviewers. Everything seemed to be going along quite well until at one point I innocently said 'fluff' (which I understood to be a perfectly common term) to which he rolled his eyes, groaned and looked at me like I'd taken a dump on the table. I quickly switched to 'lore' but I assume the damage was done. I was just super confused by that response as he'd only moments earlier been referring to miniatures as 'toy soldiers' which seemed like an intentional effort to imply 'we don't take things that seriously here'...

1.38 the humble thing... dad of 3 here.... I Try not to give value judgements on the things they do. They just want to show you what they're doing (they just want your attention) they're not asking for your approval or appraisal - except if you have been telling them how great they are at everything. Then they have been trained to wait for your positive praise which will end up in them constantly seeking it. A good method is to simply describe what they've done and ask them how it makes them feel. "you've drawn lava, those look like really hot rocks! What does it make you feel? Do you like it? are you proud?" etc.

In my experience with 40k, the competitive scene isn't frowned upon due to the people, but due to the effect it has on the game. Or at least the perceived effect. The number and frequency of rule changes/updates, point changes, unit changes etc is largely attributed to the competitive scene wanting them, the thought being that if there wasn't the scene didn't exist, things would be much more stable. There's nothing tangible to back this up, but it's the most common line of thought I've come across as to why a lot of casual players don't like that side of things.
@ABemis5 ай бұрын
I've seen that expressed a lot too, and it's bizarre. The changes are far more relevant for casual games where you just want to enjoy your favourite models. For competitive play, you can always just change your list to use what's currently good. I find it super-weird that anyone playing casually wouldn't want the game to be more fair so they could have their favourite units do more cool stuff instead of failing and getting blown away in no time. Talk about 'rule of cool', there's nothing cool about our favourite units sucking. I remember back in older editions when stuff would release with bad unfun rules, and we had this bad feeling because we knew it would be stuck like that for years. We would have been over the moon if they had updated stuff regularly to be more fair and fun!
@RequiemWraith5 ай бұрын
@@ABemis it's the entire reason I gave up playing. I picked up the game just as 9th edition was introduced. I could only play once every few months due to various factors. Each time, I had to buy some new models and also restructure the army because the points had changed so much, and I was also effectively relearning to play each time, because various rules had come in or gone away. Then after only 3 years, there's an entire new edition announced, that killed what was left of my interest there and then.
@ABemis5 ай бұрын
@@RequiemWraith I appreciate you had unfavourable circumstances, but I think it would be strange for them intentionally leave the game less fun for the sake of people who only play once every few months, at the expense of people who play at least somewhat regularly. I don't think it's a competitive viewpoint, just a 'person who plays regularly' viewpoint, who wants their favourite guys to do cool stuff. GW is doing it so the game is more fun in general.
@RequiemWraith5 ай бұрын
@@ABemis but why does that require such huge changes? If maximising fun is the goal, the ideal would surely be so some initial testing, then when they do the tweaks every 3 months, make small adjustments, see how they are received. Make another batch of small adjustments etc. Give it maybe a year, it gets to the point where it's all balanced and everyone's having fun.

The issue with ai art flagging on social media is that it doesn’t discriminate between assistive tools and generative algorithms ( the fancy name for the ai generated pictures). On the point of toxic players in tournaments: I find that the really good players are generally really good sports. I think that's because they like to play the game, they have fun playing the game, and they enjoy getting better at the game, therefore they tend to be better at the game. The players who are poor sports tend to be in the group who are only trying to win and aren't there for the fun of the event. In short, I think there is a survival bias that tends to favor players that enjoy the game and are therefore more friendly. Though that's not to say you couldn't have a player who is very good at the game and is a jerk. Though I don't think that player would get invited back to very many events.

10 years from now if Rob is still doing this, he's sitting around at a event talking to fans, he sees a teen show up, smile fades from his face as it's his turn to talk to Rob 'Rob, when I was little, I was shy and painted as Louise's Rascal goblin mini she was teaching, you told me my painting was shit, he reaches into his pocket and slams a golden daemon commendation medal on the table, 'well who's the shitty painter now?!'

Tournaments/organised play events are 100% the best way to learn the game and meet lots of other players. I've found at every organised event I've played in everyone has been welcoming and happy to explain rules etc if you're not 100% on them. Very rare occasions have I ever met someone at one who was a dick.

I feel your pain Rob. My fiancee is so bad at answering the phone I had to make my sister my emergency contact and she doesn't even live in the same country as me!

Many people are very good at demonstrating that they know the rules of a game but not very good at communicating those rules to other people.

Just a thought on the tournament players, I haven't played a tournament in years, and I have encountered a few people I wouldn't play again. However, at least part of that is I don't enjoy tournament play, so part of that interaction is myself faced with a game experience I am not enjoying. I do think that part of the reason tournament players say the scene is great is that they have shared interests and goals so they are going be pre-disposed to get on, we all have friends other people don't get on with. So really it's about finding your crowd and enjoying your particular flavour of the hobby. I don't think tournaments are fun for all though, and that is the bit I do find irritating the constant refrain is if you don't enjoy tournaments you're wrong which seems to be the message a lot of tournament players put across I do also think the whole anti-tournament player thing is complicated by meta-lists, the optimisation discussion and how that spills into casual play. That isn't the fault of tournament players, and is more an issue with poorly internally balanced systems, and prohibitive costs. In some games you can pick anything, it won't be optimal but it will do stuff, and you can get results. Others you could buy (at considerable cost) an army and no matter your dedication just be up against it. That drives the desire to know what is good, and then bring an optimised list to a casual game, which files the fire. Agree on the idea of competitive being a bad description, I play a lot of what I guess people would now call narrative, we are all playing to win though once we get to the table. Winning isn't the goal though, having a force that we enjoy and find interesting and trying to make it work is the draw All games unfold a story so I find narrative as a description of game type is weird. I'd call it casual, it's a social get-together with a game to engage with, with a view to trying stuff and having fun
