"Juice" Newton is an American pop & country singer, songwriter & musician. Merrilee Rush had a hit in 1968 with the song "Angel Of The Morning". Juice Newton recorded it in 1981. She had a lot of great hits in the 80's such as "Queen Of Hearts", "The Sweetest Thing (I've Ever Known)", "Ride 'Em Cowboy", "Love's Been A Little Bit Hard On Me", "Break It To Me Gently", "Heart Of The Night", "Stranger At My Door", A Little Love", "Restless Heart", "You Make Me Want To Make You Mine", "Hurt," "Both To Each Other (Friends & Lovers)" (with Eddie Rabbitt) etc.

When I was in high school, I heard this all the time. I didn't much of it one way or another and I didn't give the singer a second thought either. Now, as a grumpy old man in good standing, I know what a fool I was to have paid so little attention to a veritable angle with an angelic voice.

BizMatik: You’re my favorite reviewer. You’re the only reviewer (other than Charismatic Voice because she’s so beautiful in many ways) that I regret not getting to hang out and just discuss stuff. You really dig into songs and pay attention to them. I feel like your attention is 100% into the artist/song and you are really interested in knowing the song. Ain’t a thing about you that’s phony. Don’t ever change, man.

I can't believe how well this song has held up. It sounds so fresh. I loved it when it came out and I love it now. This version was a huge hit too. Thanks for checking it out.

I love her songs, "The Sweetest Thing I've Ever Known" and "Break It To Me Gently". Those songs really show off her singing skills and the emotion that she brings to the song.

This was written by Chip Taylor (aka Wes Voight- brother of actor John Voight) I heard him interviewed on Sirius XM and he says as soon as he'd with the first words "there'll be no chains to bind your hands not if my live can't bind your heart" he says he got chills and goosebumps all up and down his arms. Great song writing

So... its kinda forgotten now. But this song was DAMNED MONSTER when it first came out. I think I was, like, 4 years old when it dropped... but that melody stuck in my head for the rest of my life, even then. 💯

Merelee Rush had the original hit in 1968, this is a cover many years later. A new gene ration had probably never heard of the song. Merelee's version went to #7 on the Billboard hot 100, and earned her a Grammy nomination for female vocalist of the year in 1968. Juice Newton's 1981 version went to #4, not much difference. except that songwriter Chip Taylor made more money, and Juice's brother Fig could afford go to college.

I adore Juice. She was quite popular in the late 70's into the 80's. Check out Break It to Me Gently, Queen of Hearts, Love's Been a Little Bit Hard On Me or The Sweetest Thing.

The original Marele Rush version in 1968 was very provocative for it's time. Juice did it justice

I attended a Juice Newton show in Pennsylvania and John Prine opened, circa 1980ish. Half the crowd left after John performed, and she asked if they sold season tickets to the venue. She is a fine artist but John Prine is a ledgend.

Better redo my post. In Appalachia PA today... they would stay. She is not too woke for them today. She is actually their kind..... using that overused and abused term. He beauty would have kept the good ole boys.

Angel of the Morning reminds of Barbara Mandrell’s song, Angel in Your Arms….(this morning will be the devil in someone else’s arms tonight). Another one of Juice’s songs that will hook you is Queen of Hearts. Love’s Been a Little Bit Hard On Me is another catchy one.

I'm just a little late to the reaction, Biz...but this version is so much better than the one recorded by Merrilee Rush. And the end where she holds that last note to fade out...I still get chills hearing it.

I must have been in my 'house music phase' as I absolutely know Juice Newton and this song but Shaggy is a mystery. I might have heard the name Shaggy before but not sure. I didn't know this was covered by anyone/never heard the cover.

Shaggy had a couple of good songs (imo). Definitely did not like the cover/sample you referenced. You're spot on about not being able to escape his version. UGH. Yet to read the comments but certain others mentioned it was a massive global hit
