Hello, I’m here to inquire about how the audition for voice operates. Do applicants sing what is given by Juilliard, or can they sing any opera or classical piece they so chose. I appreciate and look forward to the feedback. Thanks!

Hi Wyatt - thanks for asking. Voice applicants can select their audition repertoire for both the pre-screening audio submission and in-person auditions. I've pasted the requirements below--for the in-person audition, they need to be performed from memory. You can also learn more on our website (www.juilliard.edu/music/vocal-arts) or by emailing [e-mail]. An Italian art song or aria from 18th century or before. An art song in English (not a translation). A third selection in any language. Please note: An aria from an opera or oratorio is welcome, though not required. If English is not your native speaking language, please prepare an additional song in your native language.

Are the applicants expected to able to sing primarily opera/classical music ? Or can the voice just be soulful and more on the rhythm and blues side ? Most videos I have seen the students are singing classical music so im just curious ?

on their website it says "italian art song" (so opera i assume), an english art song, and then a song in any language.

Opera is what’s expected, not sure if they expect other styles but you’ll be learning opera while there.
