Three years ago I was at my lowest low. Life was bad. YT put Jocko’s Extreme Ownership Ted Talk in my feed, and it led me down the responsibility rabbit hole. Next I discovered Jordan Peterson, then Goggins. Then Pat Mac. These 4 men changed my life. Three years ago I was 51, working a $10 an hour job, and living in a hotel. My life had fallen apart 8 years before and I was stuck in the hole I had dug for myself. It was hopeless… I thought. These days I work out in some form 7 days a week, I’m making nearly $30 an hour at a new job, I’m growing, learning, and becoming a better person than I was the day before, every single day. Pat, if you ever read this, thank you. You saved my life. You saved my family. The inspiration you’ve given me and others cannot be underestimated or understated. You’re not just making people stronger, you’re saving people’s lives and creating a better tomorrow for us all by doing so, every single day.

As a vet who also got some wacky, very painful diseases (auto-immune arthritis and erythromelalgia!), I was down for the count for a couple years, thought I wouldn't lift or run ever again. It sucked watching my body, which was very highly fit when I was in the Army, turn soft. I recently got tired of that shit and just said fuck it, and got back to it. Going on 2 months of working out most days and it's going great!

I used to be a track guy. I had to stop the video & comment just to emphasize how respectable a 56 second 400m is. Anything under a minute is pretty damn damn good. Anything under 50 seconds is approaching the elite of the elite levels. That 55-60 second range takes some serious toughness, especially for a bigger dude. I always liked the 400 because as long as you could work harder for longer, you could be super competitive.

In the Interest of staying young in the body into 90's plus years, My Tai Chi instructor said The Chinese Masters would gage the age of a Martial Artist body by 3 measures. 1. Elasticity of the skin, maintained mainly with the Qigong practices. 2. Strength/Flexibility of the spine. 3 For how long can you practice continuous martial arts movements in a low to the ground stance as in thighs parallel to the ground stances, a good goal is 30 minutes to an hour. Also I would also add all the grips hand/forearm/finger/toe/foot/calve strength, good for the central nervous System to train the hands feet and spine.

We've all done some sort of military service, tired, pain, arthritis and even diabetic thought we don't drink sodas or eat loads of crap. Sometimes I'll wash the dishes and need a 15 minute nap. Before my 50th I was training hard to join up for the Dad's Army but some days it's hard enough to walk let alone do the assault course. 😂 But getting better as I'm getting off all the meds they were pumping into me.

Speaking of sprints: 400m sprint was one event of a physical fitness test I had to do for a job and man, i trained and trained and my best time in training was like 1:07. But test time came around and we went in groups of 4. I happened to have the other biggest guy in the entire candidate pool (I was the largest by far at 6'4" 250 pounds, he was about 210-220) and just having him in my group motivated me to run my best 400m sprint at 50 seconds flat. Everyone was astounded that a 250-pound lineman sized dude could do it. I felt so good, and even my biggest competitor said, "Bro, you got some wheels on you. I tried to catch you, and i couldn't!" He was on my heels the whole time, though. I gotta get back into that sprinting shape. Best I've ever felt!

Similar style, im a creator. I just wanna work out, go the gym, and start doing, and body tells me what it needs and what it dont need. I try to learn as much bodyweight moves as possible, so i have a wide variation of exercises. Sometimes it is basic moves, "heavy" weights, sometimes more cardio, sometimes not at all. Variying between very basic moves and difficult ones, not forgetting weighted stretches and mobility. Jogging sometimes. I might work out hard 20 h/week for three months, then slow down for months. And start over again. Hardest part really is to not do another set or exercise even when you feel like you're superman at the moment. It sucks. It's like coitus interruptus. But it is necessary. What got me at this point was work related shoulder problem, that i started to fix, and that i have no more money to my favourite sport anymore.

I suffer from Fibromyalgia. It is a brutal, life altering disease that centres around a highly sensitized pain system and pathological CNS function. The fallout from exercise is terrible. Unimaginable pain from head to toe, there is nowhere it doesn't hurt. Fatigue, headaches, allergies, shortness of breath, sound, smell and weather sensitivity, and for me very bad stiffness. Symptomatically very similar to Pat's illness. It has been on and off for nearly twenty years, but since 2020 has been the worst I have suffered. I feel only now I am beginning the long haul back. I've done it before, and know I will have to do it again as it's incurable. Pat is an inspiration.
