Jujutsu Kaisen episode 19 dropped and on top of a beautifully animated episode we got the premiere of Black Flash. And considering the fact that even the anime got it a bit messy I found it necessary to put together a video in which I explained Black Flash.

more than that, the reason it is creating a cavitation is not because of a large change in pressure (because cursed energy is not increasing the actual velocity of the user's fist), it is due to essentially an increase in mass (E=MC^2) causing a momentary singularity at the point of impact. essentially you're hitting them with a pistol shrimp cavitation blast in spacetime, rather than in a fluid

​@@wafflies8790 The mathematical term for the power of means to multiply something by itself. The term you may remember from school is to Square a number where you multiply it by itself once. So for example 6 to the power of 2 becomes 36. Compared to it just being multiplied by 2.5 (which I also initially thought it was) means Black Flash is absolutely crazy. Here's a maths example showing the difference: 100 x 2.5 = 250 100^2.5 = 100,000 With how strong Yuuji's base strength is Black Flash catapults it into the stratosphere. The maths is frankly crazy.

It really just complicates things further. Because when raising something to the 2.5, it'll only increase if it's greater than 1. But 1 what? One apple? One Newton? One gigapascal? Using the 60 psi example in the video, if you convert that to gigapascals and raise it to the 2.5, you'll get 3.4 Pa = 0.00049 psi, which is a 99.999% power decrease, probably less than an infant's punch. Basically, you have to raise it by an integer quantity, or else the units cannot be meaningful. For example, to calculate the volume of a cube with side length 3, you do (3 m)^3 =27 m^3, and a side length of 0.5 gives you 0.125 m^3. This has physical meaning, but 0.125 m^3 cannot be compared to 0.5 m. But what do you do for a 2.5-sided cube? Have meters to the 2.5? And even then, you can't compare it to meters. Same here. psi^2.5 cannot be compared to psi. So it's meaningless to talk about a power increase like this. Basically, this whole 2.5 thing is mathematically impossible to do, and, even if it were an integer power, would be entirely meaningless.

So when yuji punches someone at high power and he adds black flash just think of it as an integer being increased by the power of what ever number above 1, its pretty damn simple the way your saying makes it seem like applying certain integers to a certain power can be impossible. Considering "Cursed Energy" can sometimes physically harm things, I think it's more appropriate to treat the manifestation of cursed energy as coverting energy into mass, e = mc^2. Now, what happens when mass moves at speeds close to the speed of light? You get relativistic effects - either time dilation or space contraction. Producing mass within 1 trillionth of a second is probably akin to forcing matter to move at the speed of light - so space contracts and your fist hits the target much earlier - the subsequent deceleration also suddenly forces space to un-contract, causing a much larger explosion.

There is a technique literally called "Devil Trigger Distortion" in Devil May Cry game series, which needs you to activate a special Devil Trigger mode just after the attack lands, like on the next frame or something, so that the game counts that same attack twice and multiplies damage of non-devil attack by the damage of the Devil Trigger attack. Multi-hit attacks can even benefit from multiple uses, when you switch between normal and Devil Trigger mode back and forth.

The black flash can also be made stronger by the amount of cursed energy used at the moment. Cursed energy starts at a 2 as a minimum (exponents bs, stuff), meaning that in addition to increase by the power of 2.5, the physical power of the user, the amount of cursed energy needs to be taken into account- it could be the bare minimum 2, or 10, or 1000 (if you're Gojo, and feel like breaking a continent). So it's physical strength+X amount of cursed energy used ^2.5= big ass punch

I feel that Yuji's Lag definitely helps with black flash. Being able to strike with lag helps with his timing, I.E: he can activate his divergent fist a few seconds before the dtrike allowing him to bridge hit that 0.00001 second barrier needed for a black flash.

Not really. Black Flash is basically Divergent Fist but way faster. It isn't simply punching with one fast cursed energy punch. Instead, it's more like trying to delay your cursed energy to hit at the exact timing of a trillionth of a second after your punch connects. This would allow you to blast your cursed energy with an explosive power. Don't get me wrong, JoJo characters would still demolish most cursed spirits but it won't be a black flash machine gun.

I love the concept of black flash and its excution in the anime however I think the decision to make Yuji successfully excutes one mere minutes after it's first mentioned to him (and even worse to us the audience) THEN have him pull off the ungodly feat of doing 4 in a row literally the world record in the same episode severely undermines its impact. What confuses me the most is that right after that fight the anime starts using blackflash in perfect moderation like it should've been. Even Yuji stops doing it so consistently. It's such a weird mistake to do.

I agree with you, imo , it was a way to power up Yuji and to keep strong enough relative to the rest of the cast. With the introduction of Todo, Hanami, and everyone else relevant that had yet to have screen time up to that point , Yuji was falling behind the rest of the cast so Gege needed a quick way to power him up. It was a bit of an asspull but it was a quick and tolerable way to take advantage of Yuji’s latent potential.

It's not necessary for a body part specifically to make contact with the opponent for a black flash to occur, it just has to be something you imbue with your cursed energy, for instance, Nobara landed a black flash on Kechizu with one of her CE imbued nails, or Nanami in Jjk0, he landed a series of black flashes with that short blunt sword he uses. In short, it doesn't have to be a punch or a kick, hypothetically, anything you imbue with your CE can result in a black flash if the right conditions are met.

not trying to be too pedantic, but raising something to the 2.5th power doesn't make sense unless you specify the units being used. Powers don't translate to different units and will give you a different answer when used with a different unit. 60 psi to the 2.5th power is roughly 28 thousand psi, like you mentioned, since 60^2.5 = 27885.4 but I could just as easily convert the psi pressure of the punch into a new unit, such as megapascals, both of which are units of pressure. The same punch of 60 psi would have a pressure equivalent of 0.4137 megapascals. If I use the same 2.5 power, then the value actually goes down. 0.4137^2.5 = 0.11008 so the 2.5 power makes no sense unless a unit is specified for 2.5, then all measurements of the punch would need to be converted to that specific unit before being raised to the 2.5 power. so, Id assume the author had a specific unit of pressure in mind, something that would have numbers quite a bit larger than 1 so that the effectiveness of the power was stronger, but I don't know if the unit was ever mentioned in the manga or by the author or something, I've only ever seen the anime episode.

You’ll find that regardless of what unit you use, as long as you square them you can always convert it back to the original value. I solved this showing 1 pascal raised to the 2.5 and 1000 milipascals raised to the 2.5 are actually the same. 1 Pa=1000 mPa (1 Pa)^2.5= 1 Pa^2.5 (1000 mPa)^2.5= 31,622,776.6 mPa^2.5 Now solving that they’re the same below, 31,622,776.6 mPa^2.5 * (1 Pa/1000 mPa)^2.5= 1 Pa^2.5 Hope that helps!

"To the power of" is a bit weird. If you use the metric system, you can measure the pressure of a punch in pascals or milipascals, where pascal = 1000 * milipascal. So, if the power of our punch was a miniscule 1 pascal, a black flash would still be 1 pascal. However, if you measure in milipascals, that would be 1000 normally and 31 622 776,6 with a black flash, which is about 31 622,7 pascal. The smaller the units you use, the more power you get

While not as cool as in JJK, I 100 percent believe that the Black Flash is a real thing. Obviously, flowstate “the zone” is a real thing, but what I mean is the trigger into “the zone” that is Black Flash. Best part? It’s different for everyone, and once you find it it’s easier to pull off, like an actual Black Flash in the zone. When I ran track, usually on the second to last lap of a race (I did didstance) I would start to speed up for what’s called a kick (a final finishing sprint to the end). A few times, few enough I can name each of them, that push was A LOT stronger than any push I usually made. It almost always came with insane new records or stealing wins. Those moments were when I felt “in the zone”. An insane focus brought on by my abilities that allowed me to perform better than I had ever had. To me, the Black Flash is an amazing concept for JJK, because for those who have experienced their own real Black Flash, they get what Gege was trying to convey in such a deeper context.
