It's nice to see a channel that focuses heavily on paperbacks! Sometimes I feel like I'm the only person in my area that collects them. Which makes it easy to find tons of them in used bookstores and thrift stores. But it's a lonely hobby. I'm going to enjoy watching your other videos! I LOVE collecting Doctor Who books! In America, it's mostly the American reprints, but I've managed to get a few originals online. I'm always on the lookout for the ones based on episodes of the tv show that are lost. They make for good, quick reads! I used to love taking one to work with me to my security job and reading them in the office to stay awake at night. Great times!

It's fantastic to see how you look after your early Dr.Who books. I owned a full collection many years ago and was fortunate enought to have met the late great Uncle Terry, who visted our local library in the early 80's. He kindly read us a story and signed some of our Dr.Who books. Unfortunately i wanted to buy other things as i grew up and sold all my books along with the signed copies of Genesis of the Daleks and Planet of the Daleks. Massive regrets! Lately though i have completed a full set of Jon Pertwee 1st editions by carefully buying on ebay. Subscribed and loved the vid.

Thanks Bryan, I met Uncle Terry the once, lovely chap. I too am rebuilding the collection but high grade copies are a bit scarce. Well done on the Pertwee fun though, these are amongst my favourite ones😃

@@JulesBurt Yep I love all the Pertwee and early Baker books especially. Found Planet of the Spiders hardest to get in good condition. Had to pay a good price for that. Nearly all of my books are in great shape but then I look at your collection and just weep....lol As I said, it makes me happy to see them kept so well. Glad you got to meet Uncle Terry. He was a lovely man as I recall. We made a model K9 for his appearance, which he loved. Took time to sign all our books and chat to us about what we liked.

My copy of the Dalek Pocket Book and Space Traveller's Guide is signed, oddly, by John Gorrie, director of The Keys of Marinus (who complained he didn't understand science fiction!).

Great video, particularly seeing the ones from the 60s. According to various sites online, The Curse of Peladon and The Cybermen were published in January and February of 1975. Is it possible they were held back after printing?

The Daleks, Crusaders and Zarbi were all hardback initially. Daleks and Crusaders had period paperbacks, but they were re-released as Target paperbacks in 1973.

Enjoyed the video very much. It raises the inevitable question though - clearly, the BBC were aware of the back catalogue of Doctor Who stories, which would tend to suggest good record keeping on their part and awareness of the programme - yet still they were happy to go ahead with the junkings of the actual episodes themselves. I don't know how these two things can be reconciled.

Correction: the Dr. Who in an Exciting Adventure with the Daleks is a reprint of the original, which was released by Mueller Books. Mueller books also did Dr. Who and the Crusaders. In Target's first 3 books, Doctor Who and the Zarbi wasn't original. It was a reprint of a third Mueller book released in 1965. The first three Target books were reprints to test the market before the made anything original.

Hello Jules hope you can help. I'm looking to buy clear plastic covers for these target books, but I don't know what they are called and can't find anything the right size. Please could you send me a link to something you know of that would be perfect to protect these books? I want to be able to safely carry one with me in my bag to read without worrying about the covers getting worn. Many thanks in advance x
@JulesBurt2 жыл бұрын
There used to be a ranged of plastic book covers, designed for paperbacks that was sold through WHSmiths. Sadly, no longer being made but I have a few and always save them when I come across them. Most collectors these days keep their books in comic bags which is ok I guess but not great when you are carrying a book around with you. On eBay I found these though...www.ebay.co.uk/itm/360206908414?mkcid=16&mkevt=1&mkrid=711-127632-2357-0&ssspo=4dRyVkjwSpm&sssrc=2349624&ssuid=FlJ6TPleQ9C&var=&widget_ver=artemis&media=COPY

I still have the full run of the Target books from those first early three up to the last Missing Adventures and New Adventures. I also have the 10th and 20th Radio Times anniversary specials and lots of other merch. Is there some place I could give them to? Like a museum or something like that? I still love Doctor Who but I don't really want it any more. I dumped my entire run of vids and Doctor Who Magazine and Dream Watch Bulletin in the bin a few years back. My Target books deserve better.

This is great - but can I offer one correction? Looking inside one of the other Target books you say that only two of the Doctor Who titles are listed - but this is not quite right. Where it first says 'Doctor Who', that *isn't* a heading. As your Armada paperback shows, David Whitaker's first novel was originally just called 'Doctor Who' (with the 'in an exciting adventure' subtitle), and it's only with the Target publication that 'And The Daleks' appears on the cover. But inside several of the earliest Target books, the title was initially listed just as 'Doctor Who' as per the 1960s book they had purchased to reprint - and this is most apparent at the back of the early Target adventure novel 'Ice King', which refers to 'Doctor Who' with a full blurb in the 'other Target books' section at the back. Obviously this got changed on the cover by the time the book actually saw publication. In a similar way, one of those early books lists 'Doctor Who and The Sea Monsters' as being in preparation - obviously the title got changed back to The Sea Devils by the time it saw publication. Sadly. I mean, pedantic, I know, but goes with the turf, right? I love the video either way, looking forward to the next one.
