Doctor Who 2x03 School Reunion Reaction | First Time Watching
----------------------------------------------------------------
The Krillitanes - aliens with a mix-and-match physiology - are trying to crack the 'God-Maker', a paradigm to give them ultimate power. They are using children as a computer, and only the Doctor and Rose, re-united with Sarah Jane Smith and K9 can prevent them from becoming masters of time and space.

I know the show now states the Doctor's reasons for not taking Sarah Jane to Gallifrey, but that wasn't the case. The last time he brought his best friends to Gallifrey, their memories of him, other than their first encounters were erased from their minds. So, ask yourself would you risk that again? So I don't get why they didn't explain that as it's crystal clear for Me. Also, I love Rose's "Where are you from, the Dark Ages?" Because yeah, kinda lol. She met the Doctor and went back to the literal Dark Ages, where they met a monster you'll meet a bit later on. I've had to watch your reactions on here after New Earth until the one after The Girl in the Fire place, as I can't find my DVD of it lol. But from here on it's fine :D

I grew up with reruns of the original show and some of the doctors from the 80s, my reaction to seeing Sarah Jane was nigh but it was nothing compared to my mothers who’s favourite era was the 4th Doctor and Sarah Jane back when they were brand new. Further: K9 was a companion of the Doctor's too, but not at the same time as Sarah. After K9 left there was an attempt to do a spin off putting the two of them together. It was called "K9 and Company," but it was pretty bad, and they only did the one. (Really, REALLY wanted to like it, because Sarah Jane; but, yeah, no.) Also, sometimes companions do, in fact, "leave" because they die in horrible (or heroic) ways; and sometimes they do leave because they get tired of it, and just decide they're done. But then, some of them do just get left, like Sarah. For example, Captain Jack at the end of (new) series one. The Doctor gives a very short, but accurate summary of why Sarah was left early in this episode.

Absolutely so! I started watching Dr. Who in the early 70's and so Jon Pertwee was my Doctor and Sarah Jane was my Companion. For us young lads and lasses watching, she was ever the big sister we never had. I was knocking on for fifty when Elisabeth Sladen passed away and it was one of the rare occasions where I shed actual tears for the death of someone I had never met and did not really know ... for it was Sarah Jane that was forever gone. *That* is how important a character in the mythology of Dr. Who that she is.

Elizabeth Sladen's passing is the only celebrity death that has ever truly saddened me. I guess it is because she was the first companion that I ever saw in Doctor Who. And there it is, one of the most powerful episodes of the modern show. I cannot tell you how many people lit up like Christmas trees when Sarah Jane Smith walked back onto the screen after a full THIRTY YEARS had passed. I was only a kid at the time but I knew about her being a companion in the classic show, and it was like a little moment of history being rediscovered, a classic companion back in the new show, in the TARDIS, with the Doctor... just like old times. In case nobody's said (although they probably have), Sarah Jane was a companion to the 3rd and 4th Doctors (like Rose is to the 9th and 10th), she was one of the most popular and iconic companions, staying on the show for several years before ultimately leaving in a story from 1976, titled 'The Hand Of Fear'. As the Doctor says, he was called back to Gallifrey and humans weren't allowed on the planet (which was just an excuse in the script to say 'the actress wanted to be in other shows'), so Sarah Jane left and, for 30 years, was gone for good. Just to put it into perspective, when the Doctor says he's regenerated 'half a dozen times' since they last met, he's not kidding. We went through the 5th, 6th, 7th, 8th, AND 9th Doctor before they finally met up again. It's not just been 30 years for her, it's also been five whole lifetimes for him. Also, everything Sarah Jane says to Rose in their little fight? About the Daleks, mummies, the Loch Ness monster? Yeah... they were all episodes she was in. No word of a lie. Last point, as you may have found from your Googling, this appearance actually led to her getting her own spinoff show called 'The Sarah-Jane Adventures'. It's considered a more kid-friendly alternative to 'Doctor Who', but it does still hit the same emotional moments and spooky parts despite aiming for a younger demographic. If you ever feel like a break from 'Who', maybe consider giving 'SJA' a shot. It's basically just more of the same.

I knew you'd lose your mind over Tony Head appearing in this episode. He plays a baddie so well. And you are right, when this first aired, those of us who grew up with classic Who were so emotional to see Sarah Jane and I love her and Rose snarking at each other and finally bonding. It's so well done and really makes you think about the role of human companions travelling with a being that doesn't age. And of course one of my favourite Mickey lines is when he says he's the tin dog - priceless and as you say, Rose isn't happy to have Mickey on board. That final scene where Sarah Jane makes the Doctor say goodbye always makes me cry. @@julesreacts Sarah Jane Smith first appeared in “The Time Warriors” at the end of 1973, with the 3rd Doctor (Jon Pertwee). I think it’s a fun story and remains quite watchable, although not up to modern standards. It also introduced the Sontarans, who appear repeatedly in New Who-but not until Series 4. Jon Pertwee had grown to like his previous companion, Jo Grant (played by Katy Manning), and took a while to get used to the new one. I think Elisabeth Sladen had a somewhat better relationship with Tom Baker, the 4th Doctor-though not too close, she was happily married throughout.
@upg315
@upg315 Жыл бұрын
@@jonathan.palfreyI feel like that scene where the 4th Doctor drops her off is one of the saddest companion departures to this day, exactly because of how understated it was - both actors seemed to understand what was happening there, and communicated it perfectly, and so very little of it needed to be said directly. Classic Who isn't known specifically for cinematic brilliance, but every once in a while it hit some amazing moments. If I remember right, instead of cutting back to the TARDIS as the Doctor leaves, the scene stays with Sarah Jane the whole time, as she finds herself alone in an unfamiliar suburban street and tries her best to put on a brave and cheerful face. "He blew it!" It was nominally a reference to how he dropped her off in the wrong place, but I always felt it had a double meaning. He kind of did blow it.
@jonathan.palfrey
@jonathan.palfrey Жыл бұрын
@@upg315 It is odd how the show gives the impression that Sarah was dumped against her will and then abandoned. In fact, (a) Sarah had decided to leave anyway, and (b) the actress Elisabeth Sladen left on her own initiative and refused an invitation to return in 1978. Both as the actress and as the character, she left by her own choice. However, I agree that in the show it’s quite nicely done-and I’ve read somewhere that the final scene between Doctor and companion was written by the two actors.

Nice reaction. Sarah Jane Smith was the companion of the third Doctor (Jon Pertwee) and the fourth Doctor (Tom Baker) in the seasons 11-14 (1973-1976). When the Doctor mentions he's regenerated "half a dozen times since we last met" he was right , referring to the regenerations from 4 to 5, 5 to 6, 6 to 7, 7 to 8, 8 to 9 (Christpher Eccleston) and 9 to 10 (David Tennant). This story launched a popular spin off series which lasted for five series, 'The Sarah Jane Adventures', which also featured K9. Sadly Elizabeth Sladen, who played Sarah Jane, passed away in 2011.

"Dumped because they got old" was never a reason why any companion left. It's more like the reason why the Doctor never looks back, or comes back, after they leave for whatever other reason-- and every one had their own story. Some met a love interest and stayed behind to be with them. Some decided there was a place that needed them to stay and keep helping in the aftermath of the acventure we saw. Some just decided it was time to go home. A very, very few died but that was by no means the usual. Sarah Jane left when the Doctor was summoned to Gallifrey and couldn't take her with him.

Kudos for just calling her "Sarah", as that's what she was invariably called during her entire tenure with Jon Pertwee and Tom Baker. In fact, she was referred to as "Sarah" 80+ times, and "Sarah Jane" only 7 times... often when her full name "Sarah Jane Smith" was being used as a formality. We had to wait until a one-off 5th Doctor story (I won't name the title in case of spoilers) to see what I call the "Cult of Sarah Jane" being born, when she was called "Sarah Jane" 8 times. That's more times in one episode than she was called "Sarah Jane" _in total_ throughout her run of nearly a hundred episodes as main companion!

That this Doctor was the same as the one that the parents and grandparents watching with their kids was the same one they watched when they were kids. Because that wasn't all that certain until now, there have been small winks and nods to the past up until this point, but there was never anything that said clearly, "This is not a reboot, all the past stories are still true" that said, I do not know how prevalent the thought or maybe fear that this was a straight up reboot was at the time, so I may be talking out of my bum here.

Not someone to just admire the Doctor, but to challenge him. And how great is Tony Head here?! Glad you loved it Jules, and glad we can be here on this journey with you, helping us fall in love with the show all over again!

For that scene where Rose and Sarah Jane laugh at the Doctor, David Tennant was stood off-set and either had a moustache drawn onto his face or was wearing a fake one, I can’t remember which. Either way, the twosome found it *utterly hilarious!*

Hi all, I hope everyone's having a great day! ❤ So here we have it, the episode I know Jules is going to be excited by the familiar face. Plus for us old school Whovians the return of an old fave. "The missus and the ex..." Good one Mickey 😂 Regarding the fate of companions, fortunately not many died. Most stopped travelling with him because they had a reason to stop, a simple longing for home, finding a romantic connection with someone they encountered and choosing to build a life with them, a desire to settle and help people at one of their destinations, or finding the continuing danger of travelling with him too much. The latter was sort of the reason for Sarah Jane's departure - she had packed her luggage before the Doctor got summoned by the Time Lords - but she was clearly having doubts about leaving when the decision was forced on her. Similarly Tegan (an Aussie air stewardess and companion of the fifth Doctor) who accidentally entered the Tardis due a car breakdown and spent much of her time travelling with the Doctor just wanting to get to the airport, but grew to be a spirited companion who eventually left because the danger, especially at the sink plungers of the Daleks, got too much for her.

You have absolutely nailed my feelings on the episode. A mutual friend got me watching New Who starting with Eccelston about four or five weeks ago and I decided as I went to pick up Classic Who based on what interested me. Eccelston’s season got me getting the first appearances of the Doctor and the Daleks for example. Just the random. But this? This episode, Tennant’s performance with Sladen and the character of Sarah Jane herself… this sealed me as a fan of overall Who. And has now forced me to budget for four YEARS of Who so I can see all of what Sarah Jane was to so many before. Credit to the writers on the episode for baiting the hook too. And as a Buffy fan myself, yeah, this was a callback both with ASH and how it reminded me of early Buffy episodes. Glad you enjoyed it as well.

@@julesreacts Long story short - he’d been working on me for years and I held off because it seemed daunting and was a big investment and I didn’t know where to start. He finally got me to agree to start with Eccelston with the plan that we’d finish New Who before the next Doctor started in November. Given we’re going at an intense rate every Saturday and Sunday, I’ll be damned if we’re not going to make it! But it does amuse that just a few days ago, we were equal. Now, I just smile. Good news? It stays this good.

Yes Sarah Jane travelled with the 3rd and 4th Doctor in the 70s. There were about 3 versions of K9 in original Who. While a couple of the companions have come to a sticky end most of them have chosen to leave. In reality of course the actors wanted to go on to do other things. I don't think it had occurred to Rose that she was the latest in a long line of companions. Dr Who has been going since 1963 so there had been lots yes. The 4th Doctor played by Tom Baker had the best Pre-2000 stories. Worth checking out he was my favourite Doctor. There was a kids tv series that was a spin off of Dr Who called The Sarah Jane adventures and anothe calked K9 and company.

One of my favourite episodes for two reasons, one was Anthony Head guest starring in this and was fantastic in this (it was filmed when there were rumours Giles was going to have a spin off) and two the return of Sarah Jane Smith. She was one of the companions of the Doctor when he was in his third and fourth incarnations. She is regarded as one of the if not the best companion/ assistant throughout tye show's history. K9 was also a companion of the Doctor during that era and a spin off show was considered but it was never made though I think they did film a pilot. Sarah Jane had a spin off that was made after this episode which targeted a younger audience but sadly the actress passed away in 2011 so for obvious reasons the show was axed when her health started to deteriorate (RIP Elisabeth Sladen gone but never forgotten).

Just a quick note on Anthony Stewart Heads history with Doctor Who. He actually played a recurring character in the Big Finish audio dramas which were being recorded while he worked on Buffy. They are semi-canon to the show (depends on which writer you ask whether they consider them canon) and he acted opposite Peter Davison, Colin Baker and Slyvester Mccoy (5th, 6th and 7th Doctor) in a four part saga.

7:10 Sarah Jane Smith is THE COMPANION from the old show when given the option vote for her in polls. She started the Third Doctor's final Season thru his regeneration to the Fourth Doctor (Seasons 11-14 1973-1976). The Doctor abandoned her due to an emergency on Gallifrey and aliens (such as humans) were not allowed then. She next got a pilot for her own show. K-9 and Company (1981). She was paired up with another companion K-9 but it did not get past a pilot. Finally she was in Episode "The Five Doctors" (1983) and paired up again with The Third Doctor again (Time Travel can be confusing sometimes).

I was so excited about you seeing Anthony Head! He had SO much fun in this episode, and actually talked in a behind the scenes show something along the lines of it being ‘every actors’ fate to get covered in goo at some point’ and how well he’d done at avoiding that on Buffy! This episode did a lot to help the modern series feel properly connected/continuing on from the classic, and was actually a sort of test reaction to see what kids thought of classic companion Sarah Jane, who then got her own very excellent spin off series!

I remember when I was first told about Doctor Who returning pre-2005 by my mum, it was just on a walk from town home when I must have been 6 or 7 years old (27 now). My mum grew up with the 3rd and 4th Doctor in the 70s, to Sarah Jane was one of the most prominent companions of that era. So an episode like this was certainly a bit of the bridge between the classical era and modern Who. You've started where I did back as an 8 year old with Christopher Eccleston, so this is almost like revisiting my youth in a way. Enjoy the ride!

LOL, well let's be fair, Mickey deserves to dish out a dig or two after his treatment over the past year. Ha, I just realized RTD must be a DC fan, that code the Crilitain are trying to crack sounds suspiciously like the Anit Life formula DarkSied is always trying to get his hands on in Superman comics. And he's made the Doctor the last of his race like Kal El, how about that Davis is writing his own DC fan fic / Dr. Who cross over, I love it.

I am so happy this did not get spoiled for you, Jules!💜 Hello👋 I've been waiting for this one. It has a few wonderful things inside. Including my tie-for-first place Doctor's friend, Sarah-Jane Smith!😍 Plus the big surprise for you.😜 I haven't seen this in a while, so I am ready!🥰 I barely knew Sarah-Jane Smith😍, since I only saw random reruns of the original Doctor Who episodes, on late night Public Broadcasting in the middle of the US of A, years after they had originally appeared. Her and K-9. Still it surprised, and pleased, me to see her here. I watched her later when I was able to catch some episodes of her spinoff (Has anyone told you she was in a spinoff??🤣🤣🤣), and yes it was aimed at teens, but I found it quite nice... akin to a cozy game, it was a cozy television series, and did maintain that Doctor Who feel. I always thought it quite well done.😍😊 The really fun part of this, for me, was anticipating you (if unspoilt) seeing Giles in the opening scene. You and his opener did not disappoint. Anthony Head is a fine actor and, obviously, does really well at Maintaining, whether he is consoling, teaching, comforting, or up to no good. The scene between him and David Tennant at the indoor pool is awesome... very intense, with controlled tension, nearly visible just below the surface, for them both. An excellent sequence. As I have said, a few times, David Tennant is not my favorite Doctor, but he appears in many of my favorite episodes. And again, I say, the actors chosen to be the Doctor are always quite good, in one way or another, sometime even all ways, but the thing which makes this series, in all the best episodes, often comes down to the supporting cast members, and the interactions they force out of the Doctor. Eccleston, or other Doctors, could have done this one, almost as well, the Tennant fanboy feelings for Sarah-Jane's character aside, but the remaining cast are often key in these shows. They, and the writing of course, are what make this show so consistently effective, and affective, each week. I also think, my opinion only as always, that the Doctor keeps companions around until they either move on, are prevented from traveling with him, or he gets to a point where the watching them age, fearing that he will see them die, or fearing he will see them live and be unfulfilled as they age without him. For it is, in a way, very unfair to the companion, seen from the other side of the mirror, to age and watch the Doctor always remain the same. Some could live with that, some could not. It depends on the companion. Rose Tyler shows, yet again, a certain amount of selfishness here. It is my one big criticism of her character. She seems to want to monopolize the Doctor's time and space. She maintains a relationship (leads on) with Mick, but only if he stays stuck in time. She certainly did not appreciate the Doctor asking him to come along. I think it also might have made Rose a bit mad because it was akin to the moment when Mick realized he was the "tin dog". Rose kind of felt she wasn't quite as special to the Doctor as she was thinking, and asking Mick along, as sort of a replacement model, tiffed her a bit. But I think Rose is just basically selfish. She wants everyone to do, pretty much what she wants, and is easily put out of sorts if she doesn't get her way. Which is not always a bad thing, but it is a selfish thing.. Not my favorite companion, but then, my favorite has probably generated more malice, and hatred, than any of them, so, there's that.🤔😜 One of the best outcomes here was the future of Kenny! Disliked by many, but becoming an instant hero, talked about in town forever, the boy who blew up the school!🤣🤣 The Doctor Who world is wonderful. The stories will often leave you feeling the same feelings, sadness, melancholy, happiness, or mind blown, amongst many others, but the amazing thing is the very many paths it takes to get you to that same point each time. A wonderful show.. Another show which can be viewed and re-viewed, just as Firefly can be. You are a wonderful viewer for this show, Jules. Your sense of wonder, and excellent grasp of story is just marvelous, watching it all again, with you, is just the best that things could be. Your reactions, in all these videos you put out, with all the care you put in, are just excellent. 🥰 Have a great week, and a wonderful week's end, Jules.🤗💜 Have a burger! 🤭

Sarah Jane was the Doctor's companion for the last series of of the 3rd Doctor Jon Pertwee's era and the first 2 and 1/3 series of the 4th Doctor Tom Baker (considered by many to be the best Doctor and still the longest running Doctor). Of note this is why Sarah Jane called Rose the Doctor's Assistant, for much of the Pertwee Era the Doctor was exiled to Earth where he worked for UNIT as their scientific advisor, as a result instead of travelling companions, Sarah Jane's predescesor Jo Grant, and her predescesor, Liz Shaw, were both the Doctor's lab assissants. Because of how long she was around, and her ties to the most popular Doctor and her presence in some classic stories, including the first appearence of the iconic vilalins the Sontarans and the episode Genesis of the Daleks which explores... well it's kinda what it says on the tin, Sarah Jane is one of if not the most popular companion of classic who. Of note, Sarah Jane recieved a spin off on CBBC called the sarah Jane adventures. The pilot came out between series 2 and 3, while the first series proper aired after series 3. It is a little lighter, since it is aimed at kids, but it's still a very good show. Interestingly, Anthony Head narrated the behind the scenes companion series Doctor Who Confidential. Also, while some companions are left behind, a lot of companions do leave on their own terms, both Jo Grant, and Sara Jane's sucessor Leela left because they fell in love with someone they'd met on their latest adventure. Death has come for some companions, but I'm fairly sure that's still the least common form of companion exit.

Then she appeared in the special "The Five Doctors" in 1983. After this episode they started "The Sarah Jane Smith Adventures." A family friendly show geard towards a younger audience, while Torchwood went the opposite direction, for a more mathrie audience. Stuff you googled. Anyway I was a fan of the original, though i watched the reruns in the US that ran on PBS for the most part years after they aired. Haha, this episode got you asking a lot of questions about Classic Who! The earliest Doctor I remember watching was the 5th Doctor in the early 80s. I loved the 7th Doctor. I'm really not sure if you would love Classic Who quite the same, as it was a lot more serious, less modern, less fast-paced - probably a lot more like the show you imagined before you watched this! Guess you could give it a try sometime. Many people consider the 7th Doctor's companion "Ace" to be the first "modern style companion" because she was more down-to-earth, kind of like a Rose kind of character. Jules, one thing I might recommend (which has probably been mentioned to you already) is that you might want to check out the 1996 TV movie "Doctor Who" sometime. I will say straight up that it's not exactly an "amazing movie", however, here are 4 reasons why you might want to fit it into your watching plan (or reaction video plan)… 1. First, the movie is a completely self-contained story, and the 8th Doctor's one and only on-screen appearance ever. So by watching it you get to see ALL of the 8th Doctor, plus you get to see the one "stepping stone" episode bridging the 17-year gap between old and new series. You'll also briefly see the 7th Doctor regenerate to 8th. (Though the 8th to 9th regeneration is never seen.) 2. Second, the 1996 TV movie is a lot more modern and accessible than the classic series. It looks really nice, shot on film, with a bigger budget (than the classic series at least) and is very easy to just snuggle up and watch. It was intended as a way to introduce the Doctor to an American audience (though it turned out to be something of a failure). 3. Thirdly, I think you might like the 8th Doctor. Classic Doctors often tended to be cold and detached (in my opinion), but the 8th Doctor is more personable and charming, more of a "romantic lead". Though no doubt many hardcode fans found the production a bit too "Hollywood". 4. Finally, and MOST IMPORTANTLY - at some point in the 11th Doctor's run, there's an episode where you see a photo of the 8th Doctor's face. Now if you don't know whose face that is, the entire conversation and scene won't make any sense. On the other hand, if you've seen the 8th Doctor then not only will that moment make sense, it will be a REALLY satisfying moment seeing an image of that face after nearly 20 years! Also a disclaimer that the TV movie has a few details that are SLIGHTLY inconsistent with the rest of the series. I think the Doctor even says he's half human. Take those details with a pinch of salt. For decades, fans weren't sure if the TV movie was even canon, but this finally got confirmed in "Human Nature" (series 3) where we see that beloved sketch of all the classic Doctors' faces INCLUDING the 8th, finally confirming that 8 really was part of the show's canon! 🙂 Awesome! 🙂 LOL

I started Doctor Who with Rose in 2005. I was 7 years old. I had no idea about Classic Who. I loved this episode. I loved Sarah Jane. I and many grew up watching this era of Doctor Who and also Sarah Jane's spinoff show, The Sarah Jane Adventures, which was aimed slightly more towards kids but just as excited and emotional and everything.

Since you asked: Elisabeth Sladen (who portrayed Jane Smith) was 60 years old here. She died suddenly 5 years later, at 65, from a resurgence of cancer that had been in remission since she was 53.

That is truly so sad... I only learned about her death when someone told me after watching this episode. I think she would be missed by so many 😢

Growing up with Doctor Who and watching it from the beginning, I felt it reached its best period of the old serial when Sarah Jane joined first Jon Pertwee's Doctor Who and carried on when Tom Baker became Doctor Who. I honestly thought at the time it was the best TV going and I loved the character of Sarah Jane. I think she was the first to have the beginning of a Doctor Who related show with K-9 and Company. At the time there were power cuts in the U.K. due to national strikes and I actually listened to her show on a short-wave radio because there was no electricity running in my area when it was first on although it got repeated at least once later. Russel T. Davies brought her back for this episode and created a spin off series 'The Sarah Jane Adventures' which was a popular childrens series. Sadly Elizabeth Sladen passed away due to cancer some years later. She is often rated highly as a companion in Doctor Who polls and is still my favourite companion. K-9 also had a spin off show on Australian TV that I think ran for 1 season.

I didn't know of the spin off series being shown here but I also probably wasn't looking out for Doctor Who back then 🤭 if only I knew how good it was! I can't believe I thought it was a serious space drama 🤣

Hi, Miss Smith was one of the doctors old companions before they remade Doctor Who. So she was the third companion to joined the 3rd and 4th Doctor iin 1973. And I thought she was the best one of all the companions. She even got her own TV show. called The Sarah Jane Adventures. before Elisabeth Sladen AKA Sara Jane Smith died in 2011 at the age of 65 years. I was blown away when she died.

Sarah Jane was, as you say, a huge huge part of the show. She is arguably the most famous companion and her returning was magical. It's also worth noting that David Tennant watched Elizabeth Sladen play Sarah Jane in Doctor Who growing up, so working with her here was a dream come true for him. Of note: Elizabeth Sladen's husband also played a couple of roles in Doctor Who - one in a story back in the 1980s, and one in a episode in 2014.

You're right. Seeing her come back was incredible, and I was 43 when it happened. I've been watching Dr Who literally as long as I can remember, and those first memories are of Jon Pertwee and Tom Baker, in which Sarah Jane featured heavily. That she was able to experience such a renaissance in her career was an unexpected bonus, not only for us, but one would have to think for Elizabeth Sladen as well. Her husband makes an appearance in the 12th Doctor's first story, Deep Breath, though I won't spoil the surprise as to what his role is. But this is where Who excels; it sucks you in, letting you get attached to people, which of course just makes their departure that much more painful. But it isn't limited to people coming and going. I still remember doing a little happy dance a decade or so ago when there was an event that would have major ramifications for the whole show, and the shock during a revelation a year or so before was enough to knock me off my feet, figuratively speaking. i think it can be said in all honesty that there is no show on TV anywhere, with a cast of regularly rotated characters, that make you care about each an every one of them. And that is exactly why we are celebrating 60 years of the show this year. But if it's any consolation, I guarantee there are episodes coming up that will make you feel as we did when this one first aired. Sorry for the second comment, but this really didn't tie in with the last one.

This is the first episode I've watched where I felt I would have REALLY benefitted from knowing more about Classic Who, but it was written so perfectly, that the impact was still emotional on a clueless person like me! It's perfect 😊💜

Fun fact. To get Elisabeth Sladen and Billie Piper to laugh for real, David Tennant had a Tom Selleck style moustache painted on. So the shots we see of him while they're laughing were insert shots filmed later.

So glad you enjoyed this one so much - for Classic Who fans it really is something special but it appeals to New Who fans too because it's so nicely written and Elisabeth Sladen's performance is so gorgeous here. Sarah-Jane's story is not the same as all the companions though - they all have their unique paths and reasons for joining and leaving the Doctor, so they are not ALL 'dumped' - in case you ever watch Classic Who, I won't say anything more. I really do love your reactions Jules - such a lovely lovely watch every time.

An immortal, travelling with mortals... no surprise to me that, after a certain amount of time, the mortal has to return to their original lives, or the immortal has to return to their own - if they're lucky to survive, in the Doctor's case. No heart (or hearts, in the case of Time Lords) could manage watching so many grow old and die before their eyes in what would amount to a blink. Hard to understand for those mortals travelling with him, but easy to grasp for anyone willing to stand back and understand: a god cannot lower himself down so far as to BE mortal forever. They always have to return to where they came from.

Sarah Jane Smith and k9 are iconic companions of classic who , Sarah Jane first appeared with the 3rd doctor in 1974 and stayed with the 4th doctor for a few seasons, since then Elizabeth Sladen had appeared in a few doctor who specials afterwards and after appearing in this episode had her own doctor who spin off tv series as well.
