Now, this is not what you were expecting in my channel, I assume! But everybody must love Julia Child, so please enjoy this compilation nevertheless. And I promise the next video will be a card trick again. While watching the video, I'd have a nice white wine, like a Riesling, or a Champagne would be nice!

An important thing to remember is, this was live TV. This was done in one take, over the course of a half hour without commercial breaks, on public television. This wasn't Food Network, where the shows have food preppers and stylists so everything always looks perfect and effortless. Julia threw things, dropped things, misspoke, because that's what humans do when they don't have 20 takes to do something and then edited to death.

Brittany Lawson I'm almost 67 and grew up watching Julia Child. I have read just about every book about her and love her more with each book. She was a very intelligent, funny, adventurous, courageous, confident and talented lady. She came from a conservative family but under her prim apron beat the soul of a rebel. To look at her, you'd think she was a bit uptight and ultra conservative - but she was anything but! She and her husband Paul were both highly educated, intellectual liberals who didn't give a damn what others thought, and this is why they loved Paris so much. Julia was 6"2" and Paul was nearly a foot shorter and bald. She was still a virgin in her 30's when she and Paul first met. Paul had the reputation of being a ladies man. It all worked out in the end. As a married couple, they had a hot sex life and adored each other to the end. Julia's "joie de vivre" was infectious, everyone loved her. She was the kind of gal you would love to go to lunch with and show you Paris. Her favorite café (and mine) is Café Deux Magots. If you want to read what her life with Paul was like in Paris, read "My Life in Paris" by Julia Child. It was the book that "Julie-Julia" was based upon. It is must reading for anyone who wants to get to know Julia Child better or plans on visiting Paris. It is a wonderful, fun read - and a timeless book.

9:49 "Probably the French would think this was dreadful 'cause they don't like anything that they never thought of." It would seem that chicken isn't the only thing Julia Child knew how to roast. Seriously though, Julia Child is such a joy to watch. I remember watching her with my grandmother whenever Gran wanted to try something new. She made the food, drank the wine, threw the dishes all over the place, and never let a bad moment take the twinkle out of her eye.

It's wonderful how unapologetically un-polished she is!! Especially compared to today's choreographed, hair-and-made up perfection... whacking and chucking and tossing stuff, commenting as she beats some raw food senseless that her husband made the rolling pin out of an old garage broom handle. Pure natural. Stuff falls off and stuff falls out, and she just puts it back in with a breathy comment. A toast to Julia Child! with perhaps a nice Alsatian wine...or a rose'!

I absolutely adore Julia Child! "My Life in France" is in my Top Ten favorite books. Not only was Julia Child a wonderful cook, but she was very fun-loving, very intelligent, very classy (in her down-to-earth style), and extremely comfortable in her own skin. She didn't give a damn what anyone thought and laughed right along with you at her kitchen foibles. Here she is struggling with that $%^! saran wrap just like the rest of us; and, in this clip, she's bouncing merrily along to her theme music as the credits roll. The main thing to remember about Julia, as a person, was that she loved life and lived it to the fullest. She was devoted to her husband Paul, was a friend to everyone she met, and doted on their menagerie of very spoiled, overfed cats - Minette Mimosa McWilliams Child, Minou, et al! When she died in her sleep of renal failure ("slipped off the raft" was how she referred to death), her little kitten was curled up asleep next to her. When my daughter and I were in Paris a few years ago, we walked by her apartment building near the Louvre and imagined all the wonderful, fun dinner parties she and Paul ("Paulski", "Pulia" as they referred to themselves) had there. Julia was a beautiful, loving soul, and a very intelligent, confident, well-educated, free thinking, outspoken and extremely fun gal. I would have loved to have known her. She is one of the great ladies of all time in my book!

Julia had incredible skill and talent, but she also screwed up a lot, and understood that her skill *came* from her screw-ups. That's what that whole lecture was about, and really, that was kind of a leitmotif of her show: cooking isn't an exact science, or a mystery either. It's a process that humans do that we can be good at, that we make mistakes at, that we can adapt.

Actually the Muppet swedish chef is based on the swiss/swedish chef Werner Vögeli. He was cooking live on US tv outside on a windy day and it was chaos with things flying about and him getting so nervous that he was mixing english/swiss/swedish until no one could understand him. Henson watched it and thought it was hilarious. I wouldn’t be surprised if Child’s voice was inspiration for miss Piggy though!

Hank Austin Hi Hank, when I re-watched the video I did notice this. (I've been working 70 hr. weeks for the past 2-3 months and have been 'a bit' sleep deprived...much better now after a good night's sleep!). Currently reading a book about Julia and her beloved cats (both Parisian and American). Am making Julia's rich and decadent Potato Dauphinois Gratin as part of New Year's dinner this evening (I'm half French, so bring on the cream, the butter AND (especially) the gruyere!). The diet can wait. Bon appetit! ;-)

@tiamia7139
@tiamia7139 6 жыл бұрын
Hi Hank - I certainly will! In the words of Julia Child, "The only time to eat diet food is while you're waiting for the steak to cook!" My French mother and grandmother cooked and baked in the true French style nearly every day... olive oil and a couple pats of French butter were used for sautéing; an aromatic tarragon cream sauce was drizzled over fresh chicken that had been perfectly browned in a heavy cast iron skillet. To this day, tarragon is my favorite herb, the smell of which is intoxicating. My mother often served a buerre noisette drizzled over a colorful bowl of root vegetables along with roasted lamb. She made trout amandine with truffled potatoes and beautiful, slow-cooked pot roasts that melted in your mouth -- but everything had to be the freshest and best quality. Meat had to be fresh, never frozen. Salads were made from just picked organic vegetables grown in our own garden, the tomatoes still warm from the sun. They cooked with a lot of onions, garlic and fresh herbs and made incredible, hearty slow-cooked soups. We ate that way every day and both my mother and "Memere" lived to within a couple months of their 92nd birthdays...just like Julia, except in her case it was just a couple days. Fresh, organic, quality ingredients are the key which is why the French get up at the crack of dawn every morning to go to the market for the freshest vegetables, fruits, fish, meats and bread - yet don't deny themselves a little butter or cream sauce every now and then. We saw very few fat French people when we were in Paris (sadly, the Americans stood out in that dept.) The French know what they're doing when it comes to cooking and eating. Vive la France!

She gives life and enjoyment to eating. No gluten free, no fat free, just plain damn good cooking and with all that butter she lived to the ripe old age of 92! Love you Julia Childs my cooking hero!

And, by eating all that butter, when she died, they could just slide her into the casket (after cooking her at 450 degrees, at 15 minutes per pound, which took eight weeks) accompanied by a nice white wine to mask that meaty flesh flavor). Bonnie Appetite!

The 1961 cook book has never gone out of print. A 1st edition goes for over £800 and I love the cut n clips. She can so throw as many pots and utensils needed. Because she primarily needed to learn to cook during the war and had never tasted such good foods, until she lived in Paris and France - once she had to married and follow her husbands posting.

Man, we used to watch her in the UK on cable in the 90's and absolutely piss our pants. A true American legend. So funny. 😂 Her tart tatin is my favourite.

Many years ago, I was a server at K&W cafeteria and a large group had taken her to eat. I never forgot her horrified expression as she viewed the food on the line and it appeared she was growing visibly sick as she nearly fainted and had to be supported. I think she muttered something like 'Mon Deiu, the things they have done to the food here'. At this point the manager came out and asked if she would be ok and she was seated at a table with her guest. I think all she ended up having was a glass of water and a corn muffin. Of all our famous K&W guests, only she remains in my memory.

OMG, I love this woman...I think she is my blood sister. Why do I love her more than myself? Curious question. But this was the most adorable, sweet, lovely compilation of an accomplished and lovely human who wasn't afraid of showing her foibled humanity. Thanks for sharing. If she can be this awesome in her cute, ridiculous humanity, it gives me faith that I don't have to worry so much about myself. (I recently dropped an entire day's worth of cooking on the floor in front of and on a second date...because it was very hot. To the gentleman's credit, he suggested we just scoop off the top portion that didn't touch the floor - which was so sweet, and dinner was lovely. The relationship didn't pan out well in the end, but dinner was awesome!) Thank you, Julia Child, for teaching everyone that it is more than alright to fail sometimes, and still be the absolute best.

I’m here because I am watching the new HBO series with Sarah Lancashire (who is great). I had never heard of Julia Child but I think she was fabulous and have been trawling all her videos online. In the UK we had own “Julia” called Fanny Craddock who ran her own hilarious cooking show on the BBC way from 1955 to 1975. Back then these cooking shows were real, warts and all, lol.
