I have one fearful, harming thought - not aimed at anybody - just a thought, when I go to bed. Ir seems stuck on the left side of my head. It's been happening for 3 years, ever since I lost my job. Sometimes I don't actually think it, but the shadow of it is there the minute I put my head on the pillow. I do a short meditation before sleep, and I can usually sleep 4 hours or so, but if I wake up, I can't really fall asleep completely. Today, after breakfast, I felt achy, and wanted to lie down. The minute I did, I felt the need to think the thought in order to rest, but if I did, I would so upset, I'd have to get up. So I tried to think of positive things, but the shadow of the thought did not allow me to fully rest.

Beautiful. I don't always do this, but when I HAVE done this, I usually handle the issue with a level of calm and patience and stability that might even seem disproportionate to the issue at hand. It's good to know that this is a good technique. It's honestly good to know that being comforting AND honest with oneself don't exclude each other and don't have to lead to shame.

ThanQ Julia, great content always. May I share a nugget, when a negative untrue message enters my thoughts: A. 5 seconds to remove before roots are established B. My spoken or sung words uses a higher part of my brain and I can't intentionally think on what I am singing and the other thought run around in my mind. C. have a go to scripture, song or something uplifting and directing of thoughts. My go to is Philippians 4:8 What so ever thing are Honest (I intentionally think on how I love each of these as I am speaking them OUT LOUD, but quietly.) What so ever things are: ~ True ~ Just ~ Pure ~ Lovely ~ Honorable ~. . . ~ THINK on THESE THINGS. I continue saying it until I have moved away from the untrue assaulting thought. This was HUGE in creating healthy thoughts. I hope this helps many the way it has helped me for 16 years.

FEAR! I can only say this! the worst thing to do when afraid is pretending you’re not. I have spent the last twenty two years fighting with the worst form of fear, and all alone. And wasn’t fear of diseases or even death! In the contrary it was fear of everything! A very strange and uncontrollable fear of existence itself .and I instinctively did what you are recommending! It doesn’t work in the long run it makes it worse rather. telling your self that you are not afraid when you are , it’s like feeding the beast that is out to get you. Try and be honest , run towards it, look at it, seat with it if you can! You’ll find that it will burn itself out. Honesty with yourself is the key 🔑 trust me...

Thanks. I have no problem being able to help others deal with intrusive thoughts by walking them through their fears and rationalize why they are thinking what they think and how it may or may not be in their control or that since there is no evidence to support or debunk what they feel that there is no reason to really worry until that evidence arises. Me on the other hand, I will hang on to my intrusive thought and run with it. Sometimes it will only take a couple of hours to back of from that ledge and other times it can take days to get past it. Definitely one of my more self-destructive behaviors since I am aware that I am acting on zero evidence but I will dive in to the deep end.

Never compare yourself with others in terms of appearance or finances. Quality of friends is more important than quantity. My intrusive thoughts are different to what you are describing, they are not specifically events that i am worried about, they are racist, ableeist, xenophobic etc, they are a result of a year of OCD thinking caused by meth use and the resultant psychosis and paranoia, I cannot deal with people being in my head and i'm having a destructive and bizarre reaction. I also have a problem with contstant sub-vocalization and I feel like I am constantly on stage, this is a bizarre trap that I am seriously struggling with. What about the idea of a "secondary disturbance"? I.e, what's troubling the person is not the actual thought (they might recognize instantly that it's irrational, far-fetched, etc.) but that troubling thoughts keep popping into their head, and they would prefer to not have them. Would you suggest they repeat this technique of addressing the thought rationally every time it comes up? Or at a certain point aren't they better off recognizing simply that they are having the intrusive thought again, and not spend extra mental energy rehearsing and repeating that it's irrational? It's the idea that what you resist persists.. which seems to fit with the idea of mindfulness and acceptance, but not as much with the idea of deconstructing an irrational intrusive thought each time it pops into one's head. That seems like more resistance.

I have BPD and many other issues but this seems crazy. Is this a common thing? It seems to be totally irrational to me almost immature. I don't understand how a mature adult could get all worked up about a hypothetical situation that hasn't and probably won't happen. Anything can happen at anytime it's the risk we take just by being alive. At worst we die. Big deal we all do eventually. Crazy stupid to me

Liz, If negative thoughts affect your internal physical health visit a psychologist. Heal yourself with determination. Your breath is directly related to your mind [brain] causing negative thoughts-anxiety-stress. For a relaxed life sit on a chair, back erect, hands on lap with palms upwards, eyes closed, be still and observe your natural incoming--outgoing breath at the entrance of the nostrils for around 10-15 minutes. Slowly negative thoughts will reduce and relax the mind. During your daily activity keep observing your breath consciously. Do the above meditation daily to feel relaxed. For more healing enter the following on google search “528 Hz affirmations for health and healing you tube”” and listen for 5-10 minutes before sleep. Repeat softly in the mind. You will get relief quickly. Best wishes. Shyaaam Sir. -Counsellor.

My last intrusive thought came to me when I ate the wrong thing. A few too many spicy jalapeno peppers. I thought the fiery pain in my stomach was never going to go away. How's that for a bad spot? Nothing like your brain and your belly being on fire at the same time. "AAAH! Caramba! Muy caliente! Fuego! Fuego!"

It doesn't. It just makes it worse because you're then fighting the thoughts and that will make you more scared of them coming back.
