Jackson has to be considered among the hardest punchers of all time in any weight class. His power with either hand was frightening, he could fold you in half with a body shot just as sure as he could knock you out cold with a shot to the chin.

@Piglatinsuperstar16 жыл бұрын
Jackson was the greatest puncher of the 80's outside of Tyson. You have to say that Norris is an all time great for the way he overcame this level of adversity. He went on to become the champ. He humbled Mugabi, embarrassed and retired Leonard. he destroyed Curry, Taylor and countless others and from there he became a legend. Jackson is great too because to become a great fighter you have to beat another great fighter. We can sure use more fighters like those two! I miss those days.

From what I seen, leonard who used to do commentary for Hagler fights on HBO was spouting off "I want Hagler" during Hamsho 1 telecast 1 month after Leonard-hearns but was scared off by the end of the fight so he had Merchant ask hagler if he could come all the way down to 154 like he done with Lalonde. When Marvin refuse Ray Leonard say later for you. He get brave seeing Duran go 15 then he come back in the Howard fight but quit again because he know he still not good enough for Marvin.

I think even more incredible than the crushing power of that Jackson punch was the fact that Norris still somehow made it to his feet before the 10 count.

This is a devastating 3-punch combination and a brutal finish, but what this video doesn't show, if I'm recalling it correctly, is that, somehow, Terry Norris actually gets up and beats the count (or comes close to it). Hopefully, there's a longer version of this broadcast on KZbin that includes footage of Norris getting up, after taking these 3 monstrous punches from Jackson. How he did it, I do not know.
@IceveinsProductions16 жыл бұрын
Yea from the devastating impact of that punch youd think Norris was out cold for 3 days. But he valiantly got back to his feet before 10 and was actually upset that Cortez waved the fight off.

@clintaxe Amen, clintaxe. That was a perfect example. The last thing that an old puncher loses is his punching power. Khennyo, research a little more buddy, don't just assume what you think you know. As a fighter ages, he loses speed, reflexes, even the ability to take a punch, but the power remains. Archie Moore was touring Africa when he was almost 70. He KO'd a big, young African laborer for breaking Moore's camera after he snapped a pic of the guy digging a ditch. Cheers.

@Rasclot222 i agree but jackson always had that punchers chance and if he could survive about 5 rds he would have a great chance of catching hearns late to force a stoppage..

he was cleared by the Doctor several months before. Ray knew who Marvin was. he said he been wanting to fight him after the Hearns fight. And Tommy signed to fight him twice in 82 but backed out. It's hard for me to carry on this conversation with someone who knows so little about the sport if you were 1 year old

I don't know if we'll ever see another middleweight with such superhuman KO power in either hand, much less another boxer. Even the hardest punchers these days, Pacquiao, Valero, Peter, Pavlik, Miranda, Klitshcko, I don't think P4P they have as much power as Julian Jackson.

@Rasclot22214 жыл бұрын
@28rampage That is true very true given that hearns lack stamina, I still would give a slight edge on hearns he bigger, longer reach has a good jab and julian is too predicable, we know that he is just going to keep coming foward with little head movement. At the same time we have to consider which hearns we're talking about as well. Hearns at this point was pretty much out of his prime when Julian and McCallem were coming up, Prime I say Hearns.
@jperez980514 жыл бұрын
@khennyo You just answered my very point by mentioning Dempsey as one of the "greatest punchers". Dempsey was not known for his speed or technique but his natural/raw punching power/style. Boxing experts & fighters throughout history referred to fighters of this nature as having natural punching power. Being a retired pro fighter, I know the importance of speed, technique,etc. But natural punchers are a different subject: Foreman, Mugabi, Hamed, Gomez, Dempsey.
@57highland16 жыл бұрын
Many fighters beat the count but are in no shape to continue. Jackson beat the count twice within about 30 seconds when he lost to McClellan, but you can't think he had any real hope of coming back.
@iandear11 жыл бұрын
Complete rubbiush and the sort of thing someone would say if they hadn't seen much of him. He had a brilliant jab, his hand speed was good, his ring generalship was superb, he did indeed have a good punch, he also had a great chin and his defence was up there with the best too. All good 'technical' qualities...Next?

All true, but doesn't answer what I said. Leonard wasn't a middle until the Hagler fight. To say a welter is ducking a middle, unfair. That Leonard wasn't ready for mid until Hagler was spent from the Mugabi fight -does- take away from his victory, but doesn't change anything else. Credit Ray for reaching 30 in good shape due to not getting hit much, & debit Marvin for being a beatup 32 due to willingness to "take 1 to land 1". Again, Ray was 10 yrs older than Norris, not 2.
@28rampage14 жыл бұрын
@Rasclot222 possibly but i think hearns could give him a run for his money in the power department especially at 154....
@HeadlessEye15 жыл бұрын
This KO was more surprising. Duran was already toast even before Hearns' epic right.
@jperez980514 жыл бұрын
@millionstylesboksing I'm talking about natural, raw punching power. What you mentioned has truth to it. My point is that guys like Julian Jackson, Wilfredo Gomez, Ernie Shavers, Carlos Zarate, etc all had one thing in common: natural pop. Some of these bangers could have delivered a blow standing on one foot and still would have created a drop.
@johntvette17 жыл бұрын
Jackson was past his better days, and was the naturally smaller man. A prime Jackson might have been a bit more of threat, but it's tough for a jr Middle to face a Supermiddle with equal power.

Julian Jackson was living in the shadow of Mike Tyson & Julio Ceasar Chavez all thanks to Don King. He never got a main event and he had what it took to be a superstar a KNOCKOUT punch with either hand .I remember him calling out James Toney,Mcallum,Norris,etc.... & a whole bunch of other fighters but it just never happened .Its a shame because his prime was wasted .We got to see some good knockoutsbut he never got the big mega fight he deserved.

It's no insult to either party to say the top welterweight couldn't handle the top middleweight if they were both in their prime. The history of pro boxing is one of champions losing their crowns due to passing their prime. If you want to criticise Ray for taking advantage of that, you must criticise all of boxing.
