Well a machine gunner discharges way more rounds in a war scenario than a sniper so I believe his statement on that. It's not restricted to one or two or three guys per engagement when you are using a machine gun. You just can't verify every shot like you can with a sniper rifle. That was interesting to hear him say that.

If you want to thank him for something, thank him for sharing his story, or for getting healthy...but don't thank him for his "service" like a braindead stooge. Every step of the way he's lied to, first from the government and the military, and then from his fellow citizens when he comes back home. Respect him enough to be truthful with him and yourself; that he was tricked/incentivized into allowing himself to become a pawn in the hands of evil.
