I hate how masks have become politicized. It’s a mask, the only statement that wearing a mask is saying is: “I care about the people around me”
@laylaariel3751

Maybe it’s that way because republicans don’t care about other people, that’s why it’s politicized (also joking, but also not really)

@@laylaariel3751 I know someone who has panic attacks wearing them bc she has ptsd from being sexually abused her whole life and was gagged while it happened... "don't care about other people.." okay. How about those who have breathing issues from throat cancer... mm... i bet they don't care about others. It's all the dreaded REPUBLICANS right? There are people out here in the world who have real issues with masks that are not political but by you saying it's politicized and it's about "caring for other people" MAKES IT POLITICAL bc it's attached to a specific political group you have this opinion from. but go ahead and keep acting like you know everyone, their health situation, their personal truama's and their intentions.

I got in trouble at work (I work at a subway style restaurant) for telling a family that they needed to wear masks when going out because they were standing directly over our food, whether they were symptomatic or not, and could spread the virus to our customers and even our other workers. My bosses thought my telling them to wear masks was a political statement.
@love-in6hk

@@smOVERCOMINGITALL she doesn’t have to wear them and that has nothing to do with her political affiliation. it becomes political when a republican president himself disregards the importance, and we can see that it is largely conservative/republicans that denounce them and do not wear them. there is no point to not wear one unless you have an extremely good medical exemption. if you have breathing issues you should not be going out during a pandemic. your chance of dying if you have respiratory issues is much higher.

I tested positive because someone at my mom's work came in after seeing her parents who were positive. She knew they had it and came into work anyway, eating at her desk without a mask on for DAYS until her symptoms showed up. My mom's boss knew and did nothing until literally everyone in the office had it. COVID-19 is a fast moving, near undetectable virus in the first 24-48 hours and can be passed so quickly it's terrifying. It doesn't affect just you. It affects coworkers, their family and friends, and those people's coworkers, families and friends, etc.. It's an awful cycle and needs to be broken. I want to smack my mom's coworker upside the head for this. Stay safe and sane, y'all.

But again, humans are disgusting; I saw this kid wear a mask but lean the mask down to pick his nose. I have anxiety I wear a mask, my mom has asthma & anxiety as well-yet she wears a mask. Same, I’m 19 and been bed bound since the end of January (that’s almost a year now). It sucks so much cause you don’t get better after the acute stage, there are just more and more symptoms as you go through it. The only thing that kinda helped me for a solid month (I was still bed bound but in less pain) was taking a vitamin d supplement daily but the chronic bodily inflammation is slowly coming back again. Thanks for sharing your experience because so far the only thing available to long-term sufferers is each other’s support. This is a mess, sometimes I honestly wonder if I’ll even make it to the end of this pandemic :/ given how chaotic everything still is and it’s almost been a year now

My 6 year old got incredibly sick and fought a fever for 3 weeks and months later still has a lingering cough. My 5 year old son got the sniffles, I got sick but not hospital seriously ill. My husband luckily is one of the lucky ones who gets it but gets no symptoms. We got it because my husband had to go to work. We had no choice. He tried really hard to stay safe, but its like pulling teeth to get anyone to make a bare minimum effort. Having my husband call crying, which ive seen him do ONCE in our marriage because they are admitting our daughter and he's the one who got her sick. His job didn't notify us we had been exposed for 4 days after the first person on his shift tested positive. It took 5 more people to become positive for them to say anything and then they wouldn't let him quarantine until he got symptoms or a positive test because it would short hand his shift which was already down 6 people. By the time we even knew and had him isolate from us it was already too late because we got symptoms 2 days after they finally decided to tell us we'd been exposed. Worst part is in those days we didn't know he picked up groceries and my daughter and I went to her neurologist. We probably spread it even further because they didn't want to risk a short handed shift I'm angry, I feel guilty and it feels like its never going to end.

Hey Julien! If you want an example of how literally anyone can be seriously affected by covid, here’s my story. I got covid in late March. I couldn’t do basic daily functions for like a month. Stairs were impossible (I lived in a 2nd story apartment); I tried to carry groceries into my apartment and blacked out. It took me 20 minutes to catch my breath. At the worst point of my illness, I ended up being hospitalized for 36 hours because every time I stood up my oxygen would drop to about 85-90 (normal is 99-100 btw). I was ultimately able to go home because I lived alone at the time so I could quarantine easily, but I was sick for about a month total. It’s now been 8 months since I got covid. I have had random chest pain ever since. My stamina and lung capacity have not fully recovered. I was in decent shape before I got sick; now I see spots after 4 minutes of cardio. And if I get it again, it’ll likely be severe. I was 27 years old when I got covid. I had no preexisting conditions and was in pretty good health. And it has still had long term effects on my health and life overall. Tl;dr: I dgaf how young and healthy you are, you can still experience severe complications or long term health effects from covid. So be careful and wear a gd mask!

Totally agree about being made to feel "crazy", it's like half the country is gaslighting the other half. Like they are smarter and are so big brained that they don't trust science, "big pharma", "mainstream media", etc. I think to a degree it's also a somewhat uniquely American problem. People in other countries tend to have a more "I'll sacrifice a little for the greater good of everyone" attitude vs us americans tend to be "eff that, I'm in it for myself and my family only". This is also evident in our attitude toward universal healthcare, many don't want their taxes raised a little bit to pay for everyone (mainly those they deem undeserving in some way like the unemployed, homeless, addicts etc). Oh until they are $100k-500k+ in medical debt from getting cancer without health insurance. Then it's affected them so they're for it. Many Americans are overtly selfish and it's killing us. This thing probably won't die down until every selfish denier has personally been affected negatively by it; whether that be a dead loved one or having themselves or a family member have long term side effects from it. Sorry for the rant. It's nice to see so many people here that are actually compassionate and caring. We are not alone!!

I’m just going to put it out there that here in Melbourne we were in lockdown for 6 weeks, everyone had to wear masks or get fined, gatherings or people doing wrong were reported, restrictions were tight, but we got though it together - now we are able to safely go out without masks, (except inside stores, or if we cannot socially distance) travel to see friends/family, and businesses are back just in time for summer and the holidays 😊

Well, partially without masks, as we do still have to wear them inside and if we can’t social distance, which is fine! I’m from rural Vic and we’ve had very low numbers but we’ve stuck to the rules and am so happy with majority of Melbourne. Thankfully because of the smart people I’m going to be able to see my sister and niece for the holidays. No matter what people say, the lockdown worked, and it worked well.

when people wear masks they protect my mom, who has diabetes and my grandmother who is over 65, gets pneumonia a couple times a year, has copd and heart problems. My mom is 41, has a huge family that would be devastated if they lost her. I’m 19 and the idea of burying my mom is so painful I cry just thinking about it. We’re so careful. Sanitizing so much our hands are dry, wearing a mask everywhere, washing our hands, leaving when people aren’t social distancing no matter how much we want to be outside. We’ve had near-misses all year even with how careful we are where people we know get it and we are in the middle of one right now (my brothers boyfriend might have it and he was at my house last week, his test comes back tomorrow). It sucks to wear a mask, I get it, and some people might feel controlled by it but if you ever think ‘I don’t wanna wear my mask, I’ll be fine’ imagine a 19 year old girl and her little brother watching their mom die on a nurse’s FaceTime call because they can’t be with her and reconsider. A life without my mother is a life I never want to experience this young, I don’t care how much you feel like you can’t breathe (your o2 levels don’t drop when wearing a mask), put your mask on, sanitize your hands, and maybe I might just be able to keep my mom. I know nobody asked for this but watching this video just made me think about it. Also if my best friends nephews, who are all younger than 7, can understand why wearing a mask is important, so can the idiots who think it doesn’t matter. (Sorry if I made anyone sad, I’ll delete it if I upset anyone. I know this is a hard thing to read)

Dude, my boyfriend got very sick from covid in March. His symptoms started as a runny nose of all things and he never got a fever but he had all the other symptoms. Other people in his office had worse symptoms so I decided it be safer if I stay home from work too (for 3 weeks). It got to the point I was laying closer in bed next to him every night just making sure he was still breathing. This was back in march so before testing easily accessed but after a week or two of quarantining, one of his coworkers got bad enough that they did have to go to the hospital and did receive a test that came back positive. It was one of the first cases in the county. But me? Never saw one symptom. Not one. It was so surreal to experience because of how ill he was and despite the fact we lived together, I didnt get sick at all. So glad I made the choice to stay home when I did because had his coworkers not been more sick, we wouldn't have thought much of his runny nose at the time until it got worse (and could have been infecting people all during that time)

This is why I love Julien. He's not afraid to speak out. I developed long-term respiratory issues from having Covid earlier this year and have to carry a rescue inhaler at all times, and who knows what else will develop from it considering they didn't start until months after I recovered. I still wear a mask everywhere because I would much rather excuse myself to step away and take my mask off for a few seconds privately than put everyone around me at risk in case I do get the virus again. I also only get to see my family once or twice a year, and this year we decided to skip it because my grandparents are high risk. Zach from The Try Guys said it perfectly on their latest podcast: As much as you want to see your families and spend the holidays with them this year, it's more important that you're able to do that for many more years

I feel this so hard. I have worked my ass off to always wear my mask, sanitize and social distance since the start. I have severe asthma (and so does my whole family) and some family members have diabetes/ high cholesterol so I would feel so much guilt if I brought it home. I know that if any of us got it we would not make it. I am currently back at school and clean my room and stay away from people and have cut some people out of my life for being wildly irresponsible. I'm 7 hours away from home, so everyone is super paranoid about someone getting sick. I just got a call from my school that I was in contact with someone that is positive. I instantly shut down because I realized that all the work I've put in, the events I've skipped, and everything in between felt like it was for nothing. I haven't been tested yet, but am in quarantine. I made the decision to not go home, and have been completely alone for about a week and some change now. I luckily have no symptoms, but have still been staying in my room. I'm getting tested tomorrow, but I'm still gonna wait out my quarantine period until the 27th. It is so scary to know that no matter what you do there is still the chance that you'll get the virus. Sorry for the long comment, I just feel so shitty and like I was some how reckless. I wish I wasn't going through this, but i would rather it be me and know that I'm staying in than some of the people I know that just go out willy nilly.

I am in Melbourne, Australia and we were having 700 cases a day a couple of months ago. We went into lockdown that involved an 8pm-5am curfew, only allowed out for an hour of exercise once a day, only allowed one person to go grocery shopping once a day, had a 5km radius from your home that you could travel in unless working or caring for someone otherwise getting a $1500 odd fine, $200 if you weren't wearing a mask...we are now on our 24th consecutive day of 0 cases and have 0 active cases as of yesterday. People thought our Premier of Victoria was being too harsh but it obviously works.

It's the worst thing is when I walk past my neighborhood playground and see parents letting their kids play on it. Like, where's the safety? Do they not care about their children?

thank you for this julien. it’s so heartbreaking how careless people are. my grandma passed from covid just a little bit ago, it’s so sad knowing that it would have never gotten this bad if people just cared about others and wore a mask.

My dude, I was a front line nurse for the first wave. We are preparing for the second, and potential reinfection. I had this. I don't wish it on anyone, but when it isn't effecting people directly, they don't believe. Or if they don't get "as sick as" I had a perfectly healthy friend pass from this. And when they get sick, or god forbid someone they know dies, then they will understand. Being there while 23 of the people I cared for left this world early-- were fine one second and drowning the next, and not being able to do a thing about it was a humbling, and eye opening experience. On that note, I want to thank you. The videos? They help. You playing among us with friends, goofing off, it really, really does help. I can't tell you how many times I have come home and watched one of your lives to break away from the stress.

This resonated with me hard. I've done everything right - working from home, only leaving for absolute necessities, not going to social gatherings, washing my hands obsessively, wearing a mask any time I'm outside my home - and I tested positive yesterday. It sucks hard. I'm lucky enough to have a mild case, but I know it could be so much worse. I'm ashamed to tell anyone since I've been telling everyone else how important it is to be careful. I was careful and it didn't matter in the end.

I’m really appreciative that you and Jenna have been and continue to be such good examples of what to do to prevent the spread of this virus. I’m so impressed with your steadfastness and valiance to stand for what you know is true regardless of what other people tell you. And the coolest part of it all is that you’re doing the right thing because it’s the right thing to do. You’re just good people. Keep up the incredible work; the dink fam is sending good (and healthy) vibes your way 💛

I wonder if Chris regrets going public so quickly, surely so stressful to have so many messages and commentary coming at you while trying to find out if you have a deadly virus

I'm so glad I teach in Australia and not the US. Our schools never shut down completely (just had like 95% of parents keep their kids at home if they could for about 6-8 weeks back in March-April), which was highly concerning considering how quickly other communicable diseases spread through a school. Out of sheer luck (and a handful of safety measures), nobody at my school ever caught it despite some of our staff still travelling to Sydney during lockdown, wtf. Even now, when almost all restrictions have been lifted (except international travel and maximum groups at events based on 1 person per 4 square metres), we still have cleaners wiping down common surfaces 2-3 times a day, hand sanitisers in every room, a temperature gun thing and the ability to send kids home if they have a fever. I used to wear a mask to the shops for a while there. It helps with my anxiety because whilst I can't control how close other people get to me etc, I CAN control the piece of fabric on my face. I think now it's about 4 weeks until the Christmas/summer holidays, I'm going to have to start wearing them again. I can just feel that there will be a surge in cases over summer.
