As someone who has done martial arts since they were 5 and now owns theirs own MA academy, I love love love watching julien talk about and show videos of him doing jiu jitsu. Him teaching jenna have been some of my favorite videos and would kill to see them do more.
@emilymcmurphy15903 жыл бұрын
Oh my goodness! So neat. :) I started later in life around college with martial arts. It helped me process a lot of what was going on. It is a way of life for me. I think it is so cool you head your own MA academy. I have had a hard time finding positive role models in martial arts that aren't male, myself. I have looked and I have been met with disappointment. You are inspirational. So is Julen. So is Jenna. Just being open to learning about martial arts is something that I have deeply struggled with with those close to me. I am with you in your stance. I would love to see more martial arts videos! Able and willing with consent, all that jazz! I know it takes a lot of energy out so I'm patient.

I think there’s something really great about getting into a sport as an adult. I started horseback riding at 24 and I absolutely love it and have my own horse now. It’s been really great for my mental health and confidence. Also, it’s one of the few sports that we’re allowed during covid in my area

It's interesting you mention the security guard thing. My Brother-In-Law's Jiu Jitsu place in Toronto offers it for free for Emergency Personnel and surprisingly they don't get a lot of cops or security guards but actually a lot of Fire Fighters and Ambulance Personnel. I thought that was kind of interesting.

Makes some sense to me. Those professions don't carry guns or tasers but can still deal with people who may turn violent. They do calls to people in psychotic episodes or on insane drugs and need to be able to defend themselves without weapons. Police feel fine hiding behind their guns.

I trained in BJJ for a few years at a new school that wasn't the greatest. We had a few transfers from other schools and the instructors used white belts as bait, basically. If a brown or black belt needed someone to spar with, a white belt was tossed in. They weren't allowed to practice their skills, just had to be a deadweight dummy for whatever higher belt you were forced to grapple with. I loved the sport so much going into it, but my experience at that school made me hate it because of how often I got injured and was told to just deal with it or walk it off. They literally did not care about you if you were below a blue belt. I quit at two stripes and went back to learning American Kenpo (where BJJ was tied in to the curriculum and it was a much better experience!). I stopped in high school and have been waiting to start back up again as an adult. I don't care about being the only white belt in the room if I have to be, Martial Arts that focus on forms has such a huge place in my heart because of how beautiful they are. I can't wait to get back into it someday ❤️

I was fortune enough to haven’t gym open to train with my cohort of the team andI was suppose to test next week for my blue belt, but we are going into shut down number 2. So that’ll for sure put a delay on. I can’t wait to get to grapple again!

I've been doing karate for five years. I started right before I started college after several years of being lazy and not fit. I also had a horrible knee injury a couple years ago, so even now, I'm not as fit as others and I also have certain limitations. But I'm so close to a black belt, and its something that I love doing. Most of my fellow students are miles better than me, but I work as hard as I can and that's all that matters to me. Karate pushes me to be better, and it's such a good hobby to have as a young adult. I'm confused and still figuring out life, but karate is the one thing I'm 100% sure about and that gives me so much more motivation.

@EmilyGonzalez-oj4cw3 жыл бұрын
It depends on how severe your injuries were and how much pain it still causes you. I was in Tae Kwon Do for 5 1/2 years and I used to watch the Jiu Jitsu class and they get very rough. Your sometimes on your knees trying to knock the other person off their feet or using you leg strength to try and trap your opponent. I bet you can youtube Jiu Jitsu exercises and forms and see if you can handle the strain it'll put on your body. Good luck!!👍
@elizabethbailey14933 жыл бұрын
Not an expert and I don't have injuries myself, but some of my training partners have old (and new) knee injuries. You just have to find a gentle training partner and communicate really well. Let them know you have an injury, tap early, and listen to your body.

I have been saying for YEARS that police officers should be required to know some form of martial arts, but specifically Jiu Jitsu. Being trained and having the ability to know that you're facing any situation with those tools in your belt makes you less nervous and less prone to making stupid mistakes that cost people their lives, knowing how to subdue someone without the use of weapons or brute force is VITAL to how our justice system works, and it also is a way for them to really connect with their body and be in physical shape to do their job. I think cops should have to pass a rigorous physical exam just like firefighters. I think cops should be required to go to therapy on a regular basis even if they haven't experienced "trauma". Our whole system needs to be fixed from the ground up so it's not so horrible.

Trouble with law enforcement training is use of force and getting called out on it. Big investigation we pay for as tax payers. There are so many useful easy things for all of us, but then you get ur hind end threatened to be sued off. People are different than your grandparents world. Individual rights dominate instead of community needs. COVID is showing us a new world. Debate forever on this stuff.
