Thank you! I just moved to Berks county that is next to Schuylkill County, and wondered how to pronounce the name. The river was named by Dutch settlers who discovered the mouth of the river, it means "hidden river". It's prior name was Ganoshowanna, meaning “falling water,” by the Lenape people (Native Americans). I think it's wrong that the Dutch settlers renamed it - it shows that they had no respect for the people who already lived there, who the land actually belonged to.

As someone who grew up in the area of this river, what's interesting is that the pronunciation does change somewhat significantly where you are along it. This video has the most common pronunciation I grew up with, in Berks County, PA. I am not a linguist, so the following descriptions may not be clear, but I'm gonna do my best: In my experience, the Philadelphia area (particularly newspeople talking about the Schuylkill Expressway) tend towards a longer "School-kyll" pronunciation, with more elongated vowels. However, a friend of mine who grew up in the Schuylkill County area, near the headwaters of the river, has a much shorter, kind of glottal pronounciation that I'd write out as Skulkl, which she says is common up there near Pottsville.
