I think it is a combination of 2 & 3 because the astrology is aligned perfectly for this to be a powerful event designed to usher something in. They use the celestial bodies the same way they use their books of "prophecy".

My thoughts lean more towards the second option you laid out. But im certainly open-minded to other theories.
