Forgive me if I have said before... (potato reveals befuddle me as we don't grow them!) My summer rules for YT allotment watching are 1 x entertaining, 1x keeps me on my toes - advance sowing etc and one old fave. I have the bell clicked on two but I shall now click for you. I have always found you inspirational. I too was a horticultural student and to be reminded of the enthusiasm and studying of things and knowing pests/diseases/environmental effects is a wonderful reminder. I'm taking fun. experience and youthful exploration. Thank you.

have a great result with super size plants and huge potatoes. I use a 4ft by 8 ft mesh sided compost area. Each year I move to a new spot. I did build an 8ft trellis for beans, but as I had lots i just put the potatoes in. The plants got strung to it as reached 7ft tall. Once dug up I had 1 potatoe at 1.2kg and many at 0.5kg. This proved effective now for the 3rd year. I thing the ground gets so full of of energy the plants go nuts.

Johnny Lynch yes they have eating it all. The only Thing that has survived ate my herb bed. But onions, beans and salad are all gone. I am making beer traps now!!!
@mydanishgarden31124 жыл бұрын
That's awful, I lost quite a few bean plants and potatoes to them. The Viking and myself are on a daily slug hunt, it seems to be working, there are definitely fewer being found. My lettuces have been hit hard but I think I almost have that bed cleared now. I used beer traps in my potatoes and that worked well, I just find it hard donating beer to slugs 😂

I did try some honey boat squash after seeing yours last year - mine are very slow to even grow, not sure why! I am daily picking sweet peas, enjoy your pros. Good luck with your fig tree next year, mine is again so full of fruit, on daily guard duty so the birds don’t eat them all first. Look forward to seeing more of your harvests. Xx

Hi Katrina. Enjoyed your July allotment tour. It's looking good. I'm harvesting potatoes (second earlies), and courgettes. My climbing French Beans were severely damaged by deer this year; so am only harvesting them from the top third, above the deer line!! I find that soapy water helps deter black fly. (Its rumoured that, when they rub the soap from their eyes, they loose grip, and fall off!!). Happy Harvesting!

I started harvesting my first courgettes (and did a blind test with those from supermarket), carrots, potatoes and parsley. Today I saw my first kolhrabi ready. Cucumbers are starting to form, zinnias are in full bloom as well as other flowers. I have plenty of cherry tomatoes and chillies and also patiently waiting. Big thing this week was installing self watering system, no more hose pulling.

Good morning again. In the fig tree, an important cultural measure is the removal of infected leaves that are still on the tree, as well as the infected leaves fallen on the soil, thus reducing the amount of inoculum.

Lovely allotment in July. I have a few thistle I decided to leave they are literally a pain to remove but I find beauty in them, also a deciding factor for me was because in a previous year I had observed gold finches going absolutely crazy for the flowers they were bouncing back and forth it really was a sight to behold and many gardeners as you know grow sea holly which is very similar I think. I find the puple flowers to be beautiful in their own right. Greetings from upstate NY USA. Oh and ps your allotment keeps getting better and better it really is beautiful a little eden that you've created. Enjoy!

add a little drop of washing liquid to the water you squoosh aphids with water will just allow them to climb right back up, (not too much washing liquid less is more too much will burn a plants leaves ) this will deal with the aphids safer than other pesticides

On the aphid/ roses situation. Thecroses often make for a sacrificial plant for other, more succulent crops. Here in Spain, a rose is planted at the end of each row of vines to distract insects from the grapes...

very beautiful garden everything is looking great. yes the summer is cool and humid this year followed by a hot and dry spring which has benefited some plants but others are behind. I have harvested my first couple of cherry tomatoes this week and more has started to ripen. But my peppers and eggplants went into transplant shock and has been stunted for quite a while. They have just started to bounce back now so not sure I would have much to harvest.
