The buzz around Ichi the Witch around KZbin got me to take a look. I found myself quite fond of seeing a Shonen action-adventure series done with Art Nouveau-esque style mixed with touches of classic Shojo manga flare. The premise tickled my Card Captor Sakura nostalgia and then crossed that with Monster Hunter. In the end I think it stands out amongst its contemporaries, and for the right reasons.

I appreciate the love you're giving to the artist. She definitely deserves it. But, I wonder if there was a way to put a little love for the author too in your script. After all, the fact she's working on Iruma-kun and this must be proof of her storytelling chops!

You did a great job of analyzing why Ichi is so appealing both from an artistic and character standpoint. Usazaki's art is so well suited for this series and I can't wait to see where it'll go. I trust that the series will maintain and even surpass its current quality with Nishi being the writer. This was a very nice video

The first chapter or 2 didn’t really grab me so much but Ichi the Witch has had me hooked from about chapter 4-5 onwards. I’m loving it so far and can’t wait to see where the story goes

This is good time to push the ichi agenda. At the start most of the push came from the duo (which as far as I'm aware is the first female mangaka duo in wsj) and the potential these two bring. While that's fair, I did think hyping up the series during it's setup phase was a bit much. I'll use some other examples to make my point. I think Kagurabachi got a lot of flack for being overhype before even releasing cause it was debut series and on the surface looked like a lot of battle series we've seen. But the series quickly showed off what made it special. Akane Banashi took the approach of a great chapter one hook that Promised Neverland & other series use to obtain an audience quickly. Ichi the Witch took an approach more similar to Gachiakuta, Fire Force & Dr Stone where an interesting concept was shown but the next section of the story is mainly setup and character introductions. While of course people on board with the concept are excited from the start, it won't be until some big event that the story gets compelling. Ichi may have just hit that point or about to

While the art in Ichi is great what keeps me coming back every week are the character dynamics. Everyone in the main group, human or majik, bounce off each other perfectly with a wonderful blend of their individual sense of humor and personality. However despite being a bunch of sassy goofballs in private when things get serious so does the cast. Between Ichi's hunting instincts and Desscaras' professional yet badass heroics every action scene ends up being truly delightful.

I checked it out and while the manga is decent, it's world setting is going to hold it back. Unless I completely out of touch nowadays, I can't see typical fantasy harem setting with MC being only relevant male character becoming the next big thing in shounen genre.

I am a fan of Ichi the Witch. As you know, it is my number 1 series for 2024. And I might be arrogant about this, but Kagurabachi and Ichi the Witch are going to be standing next to One Piece as the Pillars of the magazine after Blue Box and Sakamoto Days (sorry Ouji, I am a fan of BB and you cannot deny where its placement is). Anyway, I was aware of Act-Age mainly from SEW Current State of Jump video and how I was sold on it from the start for 2 reasons. The first is that it revolved around my background of film and television since I come from that background and studies. But the second thing that got me excited was the idea of a female lead that wasn’t a comedy gag or romantic interest. I bought and read the first volume and read up to the point of the commercial arc where I was a bit baffled. It wouldn’t be until they were starting that new arc with the tv drama that reminded me of shows like Roots and The Crown. When the controversy happened, it was devastating as I cried myself to sleep and wanted to make sure the victims and Usazaki was okay. Glad that she is okay and that she started on the right foot with Ichi. Anyway with Ichi, what I love is the message about when hunting is used cause for some, they see hunting as a means to kill, a game, or to hurt people. But the idea of it as a means of survival or self defense is very strong and it is reflected in Ichi and from the background from his flashbacks. I was a bit concerned that it was getting goofy when the Shark Majik came, but once the Human hater came, that was what it needed to help elevate this series. Also, just a side note since I mentioned this in the upcoming crash video, is how Usazaki is utilizing the color palette (despite it being in black and white). Since Ichi and the human hater are polar opposites due to Ichi wearing black and the Majik wearing white, it matches what Kei and Momo were like as opposites. As I compared this to Bleach with how Kubo did his opposites with Ichigo and the Shinigami against the Hollows and Quincies. Which is also reflected in Akane-banashi with Akane and Hikaru. But no doubt the art and expressions are on point and it is such a hit its first volume sold 30k in the first month, so the future is bright for this one. P.S. it also helps that this series is endorsed by the author of Witch Hat Atelier.

I dropped Ichi after chapter 8, the manga became "so" different than the 1st chapter, it became about Japanese "comedy" (most boring shit ever)... Maybe I should give Ichi a new opportunity

For how much everyone has been hyping this up, I was pretty disappointed. The humor is that fmab style of “chibi faces every 3 panels” I don’t like, the power system is pretty basic, and the fights aren’t engaging (choreography is basically nonexistent). It honestly feels more like a gag manga than an actual battle shonen most of the time. The recent stuff has potential but I’ll have to wait and see.
