All of these will stay outside in the full sunlight and be kept slightly moist. They will come inside with the threat of freezing weather. Thanks for watching!

Since the liatris is hardy in your zone, could you leave it out if there is a frost?

Another wonderful video with solid tips! Thank you, Jim. One big advantage, for me, is the pot-starting allows me flexibility in planting position. Not that I’d EVER….ahem….plant a new perennial too close to where I’ve planted a previous perennial. 🤪 Gets tricky when you try to remember exactly WHERE everything was planted in prior years.

I appreciate your straightforward knowledge and your humor. But, right now near Toronto zone 6 I'm buried in snow, ice, and too cold temperatures. My last frost date is May. So tubers are in the basement cold room, my pots in the garage, and me in my bedroom. But this video has inspired me with the potted plants. Oh 85 degrees?! OMG!

Bulbs and corms can be so versatile in extending the seasons, either spring or autumn. I have also grown so-called “lily trees,” which can grow up to 6 feet plus, by the third year.

So glad to see how to do this. I love caladiums, lilies, etc, but have never tried to jump start them from corms/bulbs like this. Would you please add to title slide a date & several example plants included in vid? Thanks…I almost didn’t watch because I assumed it was starting from seed

I’m definitely going to try this. Our pnw 8b might have mild winters and hot dry summers, but it takes forever for the heat to actually kick in and get things going! Lol when it does finally begin to warm, our regular as clockwork June gloom arrives. Keeps this newish gardener on her toes. 🤷🏻‍♀️

I got a jump start on Spring today too! I started digging up a huge mass of Hostas that have been very unhappy since we lost a big tree and they're stuck in full sun. I got about 25 plants out so far, and I'm only 1/3 of the way through 🤣💚💚💚

Brilliant! Oh, you are so fortunate….here in the Raleigh area, those stinkin voles come by and eat the hostas. I actually watched one day. Hosta was shaking….no wind. Then, the hosta got pulled underground! Thought I got clever and installed a few hosta in tall planters. Uh….deer love hostas. 🤷🏻‍♀

Jim, I'm guessing you'll just replant the liatris as a single clump rather than tease the bulbs apart in April? (This is a great method, and I just started a bit of this last year - will do a lot more this year).

Fellow 7b gardener here, I'm in York, SC. When you're talking about strawberries and going ahead and jumpstarting them or putting them in the garden, are you talking about small strawberry starts or bare root starts? Total newbie, thanks for all your videos and sharing your knowledge!! 🩷
@loricawley54
@loricawley54 Жыл бұрын
He’s talking about bare root strawberry plants. The big box stores have them available in this form right now, and they’re in the same area as the bags of seed potatoes, elephant ears, liatris, lilies, etc. I just jump started my strawberries, seed potatoes, and elephant ears like Jim showed here in this video, and I’m in Tx, zone 8a. Strawberries r perennials so they will come back each yr, and once u grow a strawberry plant, u can get free strawberry plants off the parent plant by burying their runners in soil until the runners form roots and then u cut off from the mother plant. Lots of videos on KZbin to explain that process further if ur interested. Anyways, I have some strawberries that I planted last yr which r still alive, but I wanted to add a few more varieties so I jump started the new varieties I got this month at Home Depot. Once the danger of frost passes here, I will plant them outside with my other strawberries from last yr. Hope this helps!

As always, you teach and demonstrate how to grow so many plants and I need both the verbal and visual aids. Are the handled bags from recycled materials and where do you buy them? Do you use bags for tomatoes too? One more question from a previous video, what is the type of shovel you use in clay-is it a tunneling shovel? Thank you for sharing your knowledge and experience with us!
@joannc147
@joannc147 Жыл бұрын
Janice - my local nursery carries the fabric pots (Raleigh area). I recommend online at Bootstrap Farmer. Lots of size options as well as colors. They have HANDLES - you’re gonna want those 👍🏻 I also find their fabric sides to be more sturdy, as in standing up when the bag is not yet full. NOTE: skip the 5 gal size, it’s too darn small.

You don't really need fertilizer until they go in the ground. Seed starting mix is fine but try to let it become almost dry between waterings.

That’s a cute comment, Grace! I live in Jim’s area of 7b and it would be easy to start the iris outdoors at this time. My garden irises “work up” in late Feb sending up new shoots. They’re ready to grow! Check planting advice on these. Iris are planted “shallow”.

I know this is a hot topic, pun intended, but do you think if I lay a small amount of uncomposted sheep manure over my garden beds it would be okay? There’s a lot of straw mixed in so it’s not completely manure, and I have literally tons of it. I also have chicken manure but that’s mostly manure so I’m pretty sure that would burn my plants. I HOPE to get the some of the chicken manure outside so it can age, I can probably use that next year. But being retired farmers we have a lot of manure hanging out in our barns with no way to get it out except by hand shoveling, tractor needs some new rims, which we are having a hard time finding because it’s an older tractor.😞❄️💚🙃
