Splitting the travel 50% bump and 50% droop is a good starting point for a car like this. WRC cars usually run closer to 30% bump 70% droop. That is due to wanting the car to have a lower ride height for high speed cornering / handling while having enough total travel to soak up big jumps. They are limited to something like 320mm / 12.5" of overall travel. Before they were restricted it was common for a WRC car to have around 15" of travel.

The reason you're getting identical travel length with the wheel and the shock is because the shock is directly mounted to the knuckle. Some vehicles have the lower shock mount attached at a point on the lower control arm - when it's mounted like that you can change the leverage ratio by moving the inboard or outboard. If you move the shock point inward you'll get more leverage, meaning less shock travel for the same amount of wheel travel. If you move the shock point outward, you get less leverage and get closer to equivalent wheel and shock travel.

@saulbttf3110 ай бұрын
you would almost never want more compresion than droop, i'd split it about 40% compression 60% droop at least, the idea is that having more droop makes the tyre touch the ground earlier while landing which gives you more time to slow the momentum and soak up the bump, also if you run that much compresion on the front you are in danger of landing with the slightest steering and destroying the fenders. if you look at wrc cars they have the wheel arch cut much higher so at full bump the tyre never hides behind the fender, since you are not going to cut that much of the fender i would recomend either lifting the ride height a bit, or at least not allow as much bump, you could probably run the longest shock that you already have and just lower it with the preload, giving it as much travel as possible while limiting bump travel. hope it helps.
@DxCBuG10 ай бұрын
that makes so much sense - my hot hatch really has lots of droop which i noticed changing tyres with a jack. It really does not have much on the compression side of things which i also noticed when i drive to hard onto a piece of road that suddenly goes from flat to a steep incline. It sounds really rough so i probalby hit the bump stops there, but never anywhere else on a rough road :D
@saulbttf3110 ай бұрын
@@DxCBuGHi, to avoid that noise when going into a steep incline you could go to either stiffer springs or a bit stiffer shock on compression, for off-road it's always wanted to have a bit stiffer compression than rebound. A good way to see it is that if you have 60% droop and 40% compression on the travel, you'd want stiffer compression shock. And if you have more compression than droop then you leave them about even. The idea is that the less compression travel you have the stiffer you want the shock on compression to avoid getting into the bump stop. Also while jumping you'd want a bit stiffer rebound on the rear than the front, so it mitigates even more the nose dive which happened to Adam. Hope it helps.

Similar to a MacPherson strut style suspension, the coilover is mounted directly on the spindle in the Skyline GT-R despite being double A-arm. So, you are left with a motion ratio that is esentially 1 to1. The only way to change the motion ratio would be to have the coilover mount be attached to the A-arm. Now depending on how far out or inset your mount is, will give you more or less of a ratio. Loving the build!
@nicolelongneckergallery10 ай бұрын
Going to suggest longer static spring height AND higher spring rates. You’re asking the shock to control compression force and the spring rate is where you want control that. Sadly, adding articulation will require control arm redesign. Great content.

For rally Cars even tarmac rally cars (theres alot of jumps here in Ireland) A good rule of thumb is 1/3rd for compression and 2/3rds Droop , you want the wheels to touch the ground asap when landing over jumps for an smoother landing 👌💯🤙
@cadenmartin284910 ай бұрын
The reason you have the same shock shaft to wheel travel is due to where the shock is mounted, if it is mounted to the spindle you have a 1:1 movement ratio, when you mount the shock to the lower arm then the movement ratio changes due to the control arm acting as a level.

Having built my own control arms for my Duramax, your ball joint angles are going to bind. What you can do is cut off the section of the control arm that ball joint presses into and weld it at a steeper angle. You will need to add some support material to the area that was cut.

Im pretty sure you are supposed to maintain alot of throttle even in mid air. Looking at alot of rally footage, mid air they are always bouncing off the rev limiter. Also keeps the weight on the back wheels till the last moment, this avoids tilting forwards in midair. Also it avoids extreme engine braking on landing (thats why you have the skid marks on the floor)
@colindevlin456710 ай бұрын
That’s true but it totally depends on wheel speed matching your actually speed, you don’t want to over rev the engine on landing and absolutely destroy your drive train, that’s why you always hear rally car drivers bouncing it off the limiter over a jump because they’re pushing the car to the limit. Adam wasn’t so there’s no need

i know a-lot of dudes will eliminate a sway bar for off-roading or change away from the factory style to something like an adjustable sway bar.. often times you can loose droop and up travel because of your sway bar. you may have to increase in spring rate to accommodate for the increased body role
@fshfsh434510 ай бұрын
When launching off the jump, rally drivers slap the brake pedal a few feet before the lip then get back on the gas before jumping. This allows the body to pre load foreword then by hitting the gas you effectively lift the front end and help prevent nose dive. This is how they stay level over 50ft jumps and off kilter landings. Maybe this can help with your adaptation into the rally trails

Stacking springs in series will give you a combined rate which is softer than each of the individual rates. There is a forumla for this. Offroad guys will have a collar above or below the spring seat intermediate that you can tune the crack point with the height of the collar. Using the stacked springs will give a soft ride, but once the intemediate touches the collar its then only using one spring which gives you a higher rate than the two combined which is ideal for jumps.

Careful for CV bind with too much droop. A known solution besides just an off the shelf high angle cv axle is 934 axles. A stock 4Runner axles for example has 21 degrees of allowed motion but 934s have 28 degrees. This translates to substantial increase in droop travel. To use the 4Runner as an example again they have about 8.5” of front wheel travel from factory but a +4” upper and lower control arm paired with 934 axles can pull anywhere between 14-16” of front wheel travel. Not being double wishbone will obviously change things but doing some experimenting with machining high angle axles would be really cool.

On full droop on the rear. Loosen all the control arm bolts and re tighten at full droop. The control arm bushings are probably at their limit and holding the wheel up.

Bring on the offroad content! Most Ultra4 guys set their compression/droop as close to 50/50 as they can get without increasing their COG. They need the compression to keep the car in control through the high speed whoops. Rock crawler buggies aren't designed to go fast so they want way more droop than compression and get their COG as low as possible.
@goncalocorreia848910 ай бұрын
Hey Adam, just a little thought here, when you re hitting the jump if you are hard on throttle(acceleration) is gonna make the back shocks compress right before taking off wich will then shoot the back of the car up and nosedive it a little, so maybe try reaching the ramp with good speed and keep like a constant speed with less throttle so it won’t compress as much in the back

i think a drivetrain drop of a inch would make a world of difference on those axle angles and also help you increase the droop to more than the bump, since it makes the car more stable in uneven terrain at speed, Rally2 and WRC cars run like 60/40 and 75/25, droop is everything in uneven terrains and jumps, that is why you see with high speed off road cars like WRC and even pre runner trucks, they have waaaay more droop than bump. if you look at them in the air they shoot the wheels down so much that they get some extreme positive camber from droop.
@JK-tu1xx10 ай бұрын
Regular coilover suspension is not designed to take jumps, it really doesn't serve a dual purpose like you're attempting to make it do. The main issue you are going to run into is reliability of the shock absorber, a long skinny plunger is going to snap with torsional stress (angled and hard landings). That's why off-road oriented suspension uses significantly larger components, they hold up to the stress of a lot of impact absorption and have the rigidity to handle the torsional loads placed on the components.

I'm not 100% sure I know what I'm talking about but the reason why I think the rear suspension is sticking is because of the sway bar end links. They need more travel when you get a higher lift. It will make the car feel looser but also stick to the ground because you have more travel. Also, I would have less compression like 40 and 60 droop. Also having more travel in the rear is better for most suv and trucks but idk about car. Love the GTR Adam

The reason why the front end fell down so hard on the double jump is because you let off the throttle aswell so all of the weight transfered to the front. Would it make sense to get the chassis on scales at the front and rear with Adam in it (maybe at the chassis and not at the wheels?), and add some weight to the rear to help keep it more level in the air? Sounds like other factors might play into it more, but feels like that'd help right?
