The toilet water you use to wash (grey water) is then used to flush the toilet. Pretty cool. Saves on water! I love Japanese toilets specially the ones in Narita airport cos they have warm bidets. After a long flight it’s such a comfort. ❤

@@bigqandlil Yes, not expecting to see 1600s in 2000s, in fact the juxtaposition. Read the book in the 80s and really enjoyed it. The series so far has exceeded my expectations, very much like the focus on the customs and culture of Japan of that era and not sole focus on the Anjin -- like that the women characters are given their due.

Hi, I’m happy to hear you guys and your family are in Japan! Welcome to my country. I’m living in Hokkaido Hakodate. Here Hakodate is very famous city in Japan. Most notably the view from Mt.Hakodate and fresh seafood. Please come ! Cherry blossom season will come around here in late April. (I recommend to eat a local BBQ under the cherry blossom at Goryokaku park )

I also took my parents on my first trip to Tokyo and they loved it. So clean, so organised and so different. Staying in residential areas is a fantastic way to experience local neighbourhoods which you will not get staying in Shibuya or Shinjuku. There are so many different residential areas that they are all very different.

The high-tech toilets seen at the end of this video (they are often called "washlet") are one of the best invention in Japan. If you live in Japan for long enough to get used to them, you will never be able to spend the rest of your life without them. I hear one Japanese baseball player rejects spring camp abroad every year just because there are no high-tech toilets there.

Hey Japan! Cath was there for a family wedding and loved the experience. So different to anywhere she/we had been. Look forward to see where you go. Cath travelled on her own and had to take a breather when at Tokyo central as more hectic than even London. Found people friendly and willing to help. Lovely you have your folks with you. Hey Chris.... I've lived in Japan many years of my life. Going back to the 70s. Shintoe, is a group, who everyone, no matter where in the world. They time a chant prayer, a small gong, and lite a insent. It brings peace on earth and one ness with Nature . They do it all at the same time no matter the time zone there in.

Sunday afternoon around Harajuku station is the best time for seeing all the costumes. Head into Yoyogi park just around the corner and that is where the 50's style "Elvis" looking dudes used to hang out!! I used to walk by them on my way to hear the dj's that would play a bit further into the park. It's the best free entertainment in Tokyo!!! Happy Travels

The hand washing tab is triggered when you flush, so that the water you used to wash your hand will go into the tank. It helps save water as the water you used for hand washing will also be used for flushing.

Tokyo (and all of Japan) is the most amazing place on earth! The atmosphere and food are so good. And after a few days you'll be a master of the trains and metro. Smart to have Suica on your phone, tap and go! I recently stayed in Morishita Sumiday City for a month and got an apartment for $1200/month. Prices go up soon for Golden Week There is a lot to see in Shinjuku so you are wise to save it for another night :D

Cheers! It has been a bit more complicated than many other countries that we go, sometimes nothing is in English at all but then we use google translate and that helps a lot. At restaurants it is usually ok because we can just point to what we wan't and many times the menu has the images of the food so we can already see what we are ordering. The people here have been very helpful most of the time though even if we can't talk with each other :D

The bad parts you mentioned seems to be more related to personality, it is kind of hard to notice since it's not so much visual, we would have to live here and understand the people to know about all those i think. Therefore, if they do not speak perfectly in a foreign language, they will feel ashamed and run away from the situation. Although insensitive Japanese like me don't care about that. Depending on the region and age group, many people may be unfamiliar with foreigners. Skin color has nothing to do with these things.

Your parents can get a ticket from the machines, they all have an english button, , and they will not have to wait. Also, if you get the wrong ticket, there are fare adjutment machines at every station so you can pay the difference and will not be in any trouble. Have fun.

Welcome to Tokyo. You went to a good ramen spot. I always go there for the vegan ramen. Getting lost at Shinjuku station is a rights of passage haha😅 Don’t forget to try Udon and Teishoku (Japanese set meal) As good as Japanese food is, international food is also great in Tokyo. Italian and Chinese especially. Department stores (Seibu, isetan, Daimaru, Mitsokoshi) have some of the best high quality foods in their basement court yards. But it can be pricey.

I luv ramen. I'm lucky I live in Los Angeles which has a lot of ramen chains from Japan, along with a sizeable Japanese American community. Hopefully you and Carol see more cherry blossoms on this trip. I'm planning to visit Japan next summer 2025 when ts hot and humid, so I'm taking notes of where and what you and Carol are visiting and experiencing there.
