I'm a mixed martial arts practitioner and I really like Sifu Billy Brown's physical explanation on body movements of JKD. I find it awesome on the patients and tenacity Sifu takes in showing the practitioner proper offensive/deffensive strikes. I strongly recommend others that do not have a complete understanding of JKD to watch this video..

To people that leave un-educated reviews.. The newest one was this.. JKD hits first always, not defend and then hit! ALWAYS HUH? The first thing i taught in this vid was what Sijo bruce referred to as a REPOSE.. This was taught to me by 2 original students.. And actually.. In JKD, if we can hit first thats awesome, but if we can't we hit last!! Before you knuckle heads post stuff like this, research more and watch the entire video! LOL If you don't, you are just another KEYBOARD WARRIOR! As for as belts being worn.. I do seminars all over the place at all types of school.. They can wear what they want.. Doest change the level of instruction, does it!?

Billy Brown good job on your explanation. Action and reaction. Action is first but also can be learned through pre arranged defense moves to pre arranged attacks. How ever reaction can't be learned that way. Reaction can only be learned through hardcore sparring. So I was wondering at some point do your students engage in full contact sparring? Also the peekaboo guard you were demonstrating is great if you are wearing gloves, but not done in barefisted boxing. You do have an ability to teach, and that is an art in itself. Keep up the good work and don't worry about ignorant comments. Some people pre judge a style they have never studied. I have studied thirteen disciplines with Jeet Kune Do being one of them that really isn't a style.

How does tkd work in trapping range?
@GuroBillyBrown
@GuroBillyBrown 7 жыл бұрын
+Agreewithmyfact he never said it did. And JKD isn't trapping range...
@ezdi619
@ezdi619 7 жыл бұрын
No I said TKD because OP said he is a tkd black belt. I know JKD works from different ranges but in a video I watched by Paul Vunak he said JKD practitioners sort of have an advantage up close against the common man because not too many people are well versed in that range. I originally wanted to learn TKD but decided to lean towards JKD/Kali for this reason. And the fact that it's hard to maintain those TKD kicks as time goes on. Was just wondering what Tae Kwon Do people do in close combat. I've never seen them do an up close demonstration.
@GuroBillyBrown
@GuroBillyBrown 7 жыл бұрын
He mentioned TKD because of something is said in the video.. TKD is not good in close range. But it has some of the best long range kicking out there and should be investigated and trained! Yes, JKD is great up close and so is KALI.. But both arts also STRIVE at long range and many of LEEs original students have said that Lee totally left the TRAPPING at the end of his life.. I doubt that but GET good at all the ranges should be the GOAL! ANd all arts have something good in them..

I really like this video. I'm a long time karate man that had to take a big break, and i recently got back into classes (not quite what i had before, but in my area it's my only option so i'll take it lol). I'm trying to remaster my karate basics, but it's hard because i've become a lot more muscle bound than i used to be so it's going to take a while to get. I've been trying to come up with a more practical version of karate using more modern concepts, and i like what i see here!

Every now and then we get some nobody that wants to leave comments! Horrible comments! Not often, maybe 2 or 3 a year. I go to their page and they always have ZERO videos of them training! Maybe a MMA video or 2 of others but NONE of them! I use to respond and get upset. Let them know that I travel the world teaching and sell videos all over the world. And I have a huge academy! I would let then know that I have 10s of thousands "followers" ect. Then it him me as i got older. Them being a nobody! With ZERO accomplishments. they have chose to lash out at me, and I should be proud of that! And the best thing for me to do is KEEP Being successful! And keep putting these videos out for the hundreds or thousands of you to enjoy! And KEEP MOVING FORWARD! While they stay there behind their keyboard.. Thats the sweetest revenge.. So.. "BATTMUHA". (great name) Good to hide behind like your keyboard). Thank you for your intelligent comment! And please when you get done with being jealous, google yourself then google me!! :)

(continued) I want to take karate and what i know, the blocks, the specific techniques, and figure out a way to apply them in a non karate "world" so to speak. I really like the riposte you mention early in the video, and that confirms the fact that bruce did fencing early on and was able to apply that to his martial arts. Props to you sir, i think you really get what bruce was trying to teach, not so much the moves and techniques, but the concepts, and in the end, concepts are key!

This was a phenomenal class for a great occasion. I have trained in both Tae Kwon Do and Jeet Kune Do in the Washington DC area. I must say, I truly appreciate your attention to the details of proper body mechanics. I would hope others would just understand that nothing comes without strong basics. Pivoting is so fundamental to the mechanics of kicking, people shouldn't take offense, just focus on your pivoting next time your training. Do you ever come to Maryland or Virginia to give seminars? Thank you again, Sir!

Jeet Kune Do man who says Jeet Kune Do is exclusively Jeet Kune Do is simply not with it. He is still hung up on his self-closing resistance, in this case anchored down to reactionary pattern, and naturally is still bound by another modified pattern and can move within its limits. He has not digested the simple fact that truth exists outside all molds; pattern and awareness is never exclusive.Again let me remind you Jeet Kune Do is just a name used, a boat to get one across. - Bruce Lee

The one thing that many of the ground fighters are so fixed into now is that they are so determined now just to take the streetfight to the floor immediately they forget their opponents buddies will just kick them in the head or break a bottle over their heads. Thing with WC and the rest of Kung fu was to expect multiple attackers, Kung fu trapping has takedowns and submissions (many teachers forget to learn or teach it) to do while preparing to counter another standing attacker.

Billy, what do you think about Tommy Carruthers in Scotland. He is really fast, but never any sparring with others. Bruce loved sparring as do I. Been in the arts since I was 17, now 55 and still loving it.
@GuroBillyBrown

HI! Yeah, Tommy is fast.. I don't believe that all of that sped is functional speed though.. He like to put on a SHOW.. Which is good to some extent, thats how we ge people interested.. I have never trained with him, I know some who have, but I will keep my most personal opinions off of this.. But I will say, i spar WEEKLY and have for 25 years.. Much of the JKD community these days do not spar.. This is not good. They are really missing a very crucial element of JKD!

Billy Brown Billy, thanks for responding back so quick, kinda like your fighting style. Have you ever been challenged at a seminar by a crowd member? I ask because I have a chance to teach self defense at a gym that just opened in NJ that shows interest. Now as a security specialist doing personal protection and site protection with my men, I have been tested only 5 times in 10 years. Does that ever happen to you, I ask because I don't want to over act, but it does happen. Just trying to be good at what I do, no ego here just good solid skills. In NJ you have to be careful it is a very liberal state, can't afford getting arrested. I respect your knowledge.

Hello Sifu Billy Brown, that was an amazing demonstration and after watching this video I've decided I'm going to take up JKD with PMA in my city. You seem really excited about teaching JKD and well...it's contagious. Do you believe that I would need prior experience in martial arts, boxing, sparring etc, in order to be able to start training - and become effective - in JKD? How long do you think it would take for someone who trains 5 hours a week(1hr/day) to become effective('black belt'..)? in JKD, with little prior experience in martial arts? I get that there aren't any belts in JKD but don't understand how the ranks work yet! Thanking you in advance, George.

+George Con (Τζώρτζης) No prior experience needed, In fact its best if you have none.. And just train.. Don't worry about rank.. Just train and keep moving forward!

Now I will address the next most famous comment sent to me by closed minded individuals who most don't even train! Why belts?? 1) I conduct seminars all over the world and if a school has belts, I do not care. That doesn't change the quality of instruction, does it? 2) despite what people think Bruce Lee did give rank to instructors and students. Not belts but rank! 3) this is not 1969 4) watch tje quality of the instruction and stop asking stupid questions that have no bearing on what is being shown here..

Hi Shifu Billy Brown First I like the video it was great. Second; I'd like your view on competition sparring and sparring in general. Using the JKD philosophy during sparring. I myself believe if you can't apply this in a sparring match. You most definitely can't apply it in a street fight. Some tools are similar to other tools use in combat! Although some are illegal like eye jabs, groin attacks etc. But besides that trapping is not. But a good jab or palm strike could take the place of a eye jab. Because the tool or movement is similar. The last thing is interception if you can't intercept in a safe environment. How can you intercept in a none safe environment. I heard from several people saying it meant for the streets. That may be true but they are actually scare to pressure test it in safe. But contact environment that test their skills in reality base interaction. Meaning your opponent is outside your system or not a training partner. I have also study JKD and other styles. I also believe that people hide behind the name JKD. Instead of applying the name. Some may hide behind stories of its creator or teachers before them. But it not just JKD other styles does this as well. What is your views on the situations and the growth of developing and appling JKD combat philosophy.

+Billy Brown ,,Sifu Brown, THROUGH the years of martial arts, I learned that belts do not make anybody a great fighter it's the time, effort and focus that one puts in the art. Then again a good fighter avoids confrontation. I understand Bruce Lee's insight on the arts. That, one must empty the mind of such indoctrinations in order to receive the whole heavenly glory of the art...( The belt doesn't make the fighter the black belt only gets you in fights or in street challenges) But to be like water..... water becomes everything so be that everything and absorb the teachings with nothing else in the mind" and again Thank Sifu for sharing the knowledge.. You added a lot to myy understanding of JKD." Keep it up and i wouldn't listen to critics. You are doing this from your heart which is the only thing that really matters.
