Kiwi fruit is another one of those 'Superfood Edibles' that even in temperate areas like Southern Canada you can grow certain varieties. This edible is actually a member of the gooseberry family. The vine is a fast rampant grower that can easily get away from you but with some judicious pruning you can tame this 'wild beast' and reap an optimal harvest of delicious fruit. Watch my vlog

Kiwi fruits are vigorous plants that need plenty of space. They should be planted 3-4.5m (10-15ft) apart. Plants start to produce fruit three to four years after planting. Self-fertile cultivars are ideal where there is space for only one plant. Otherwise for successful pollination both female and male (non-fruiting) plants should be planted. One male plant can pollinate up to eight females and should be sited 60cm (2ft) away from one of the females. Kiwi fruits require a sheltered sunny position, preferably a south- or west-facing wall, although they can be grown in the open in milder areas. Young shoots are extremely vulnerable to frost damage in the spring and may require protection. They grow best in a fertile, well-drained slightly acid soil which is rich in organic matter.

This year in EU is terrible, my Kiwi dried up and withdrew it's growth - even most of the leaves fell off (many plants) . I've been watering it twice a week for 30 mins on a slow trickle - hoping it will show regrowth this autumn.

Good video but I wish you showed what a fruiting spur actually looks like. My vine is about 5 years old, I don't know how to prune it and I don't know how to identify the spur.

Thanks for your presentation. It's been very helpful. However, a closer look on a fruiting spur would be very instructive.I got my kiwi plants from a nursery last year. About 3 feet tall before planting: one of each - male and female. I arranged a trellis and was giving them my best treats... so they grew huge in one single year. This year I was obliged to give them an additional string to go, and the plants are now about 15 feet tall. It's the beginning of May, and I'm wondering if it's not too late to prune them, whatever, to keep them under control. Not knowing very much about kiwi, I guessed they would not grow that big and fast and give fruit. I just was kind of seduced by the beauty of their leaves. And my plants are exceptionally beautiful creating a sort of "mini Japanese garden" in my large Mandala-style garden. As I said, I had chosen them firstly for their beauty, and I feel so sorry to even touch it. Could I prune them right now (beginning of May), or should I wait until the fall?

great video thank you! one question i have being someone who hasnt yet planted my hardy kiwi, in the very first years how to do you cultivate one main trunk? and is it realisitic to have that one main truck reach 8 feet tall before branching out?
