What a difference a year makes in the growth of 2 great fillies. Bree is so calm and good natured. June at 3 months old did really well for the first time being led together. Your discussion on the horse pulling situation was excellent Jim.

I’m an old horse guy..was told about this years ago from an old timer. With a young or new horse, take a lawn chair a book a shade tree and grass under the tree and read the book out loud for a 1/2 hr a day the animal will then get to know your calm voice while reading and then gets to start the trust factor.

I was just thinking what a good start Bree has had. She's got a good peaceful barn spot. And also is a member of a herd and gets to spend herd- learning time out in a beautiful pasture! She's hung out with her uncles, Earl and Duke but lately with the best patriarch/ babysitter of all...Ken! As far as I can see it's a perfect up-bringing.

I love hearing horses munching on the grass. Amazing the size difference between one (plus) year old Bree and 3 month old June. June's mane and tail are different from Bree's. June's looks curly, too. I don't remember if Bree's was curly at that age.

Where I live, after a cold rainy winter horses will often lay down flat on the hillsides, legs stretched out, to get the full effect of the warming sun. For pastures along Highway 101, this usually results in drivers passing by calling 911to report "dead horses on the hillsides" . In the summer, the same people often call 911 to report the pastured horses being " tortured with blindfolds". Of course the "blindfolds" are fly masks. At one point a giant sign was put up to explain to people driving by what it was they were seeing.😂

Bree is growing up gorgeous! It's so cool to see how two fillies with exactly the same genetics can look so different. It looks like the Belgian genes are dominant in Bree's colouring, whereas June leans more towards the Suffolk side. I can't wait to see whether that changes as she grows up. Either way, I think they'll make a beautiful team.

Jim, there are people that would complain if you hit them aside the head with a brand new hammer. I grew up around work horses on a farm and feel that pulling a stone boat at fair is less stressful than pulling a plow over rough ground or logging across icy ground. Your skills are amazing and I applaud you for sticking to your guns concerning your abilities. Don’t change a thing.

Gorgeous horses! What I used to do, when training foals to lead, was take the lead rope and wrap it around their rear end (while attached to the halter) so that when you pull on it you’re putting pressure on their behind and encourages them to go forward. Hope this helps. 😊

When buying a new horse, I would have an independent vet do radiographs, an overall wellness exam, a lameness checkup and bloodwork, etc., prior to purchasing.

Bree is really maturing into a lovely filly. She's got the lovely head and the heavy neck of the Suffolk. I think the two sisters look very similar. It is hard to tell what June's color is going to be, foals often change color several times. I had one that changed color five times in the first two years. I sold her as a yearling because I didn't think she would match her mother, and when I saw her a year later she was a perfect match and I bought her back.

I keep meaning to look back at Bree when she was June's age because I've forgotten if Bree's mane was red at the first. If June's mane and tail end up being blonde like Bree's, they will be a matched pair! Bree has that beautiful Suffolk head and beautiful eyes like her dad, and I'd say by this time next year June will have those features too! They are gorgeous fillies! Lady is so beautiful, and Baron so handsome, they couldn't help but have beautiful offspring! Will be interesting to see how much bigger Lady's foal she's carrying will be compared to the two fillies since it will be full Belgian!

Thanks for showing the outdoor water trough. I've often wondered where the horses drank from when they're outside. Thought maybe there was a creek available to them. The two fillies will be close enough as a matched pair. The main difference is that June appears to have a chestnut colored mane like her two uncles, whereas Bree has the flaxen mane and tail like Baron and Lady. June still has her foal coat but I wouldn't expect that chestnut red mane to change much. Her overall body color may end up being a darker chestnut than Bree's is also.
