I do love the Robin Hobb books, but I sometimes like books that aren't as fast paced as many of the modern books. Sometimes I feel like our 'instant society' has changed our attention span. Older movies are very slow paced compared to modern ones..so are many older books. So I don't necessarily think I remember it 'differently' just that maybe I'm okay with slower paced stuff. Also... maybe the 'Assassin' is trying to take out Snowglobe Em? ...hmmmmm

I don't know, I'm ok with slow paced novels (fantasy or other genre) but this did not work for me at all. It is well written but I simply was not interested in the story. I have finished it but will not continue. So it was not just the pace of the novel for me. Sometimes you just don't match with a book.

I've read Assassin's Apprentice twice now within less than a year, and last year was my first time reading it. I had no expectations when I began reading it, and I adore her writing so so much! I love how the story is written as Fitz recalling the past, and how he doesn't go into detail about the assassination parts, partly because I'm not a fan of assassin stuff (why I would pick this up in the first place, not sure haha), but because it goes to show how much Fitz doesn't like that he was a assassin and that he had to do those things. Also he's still mostly a child in the first book, so the chillness makes sense. I haven't read past the Farseer trilogy yet, but Royal Assassin was amazing in my opinion. Assassin's Quest was good, but had fallen short, I think. Regardless, I really hope you pick up the rest of the series!
@hobbleit4 жыл бұрын
Bran Fitz always comes across as very detached in the books and there’s a reason for that which is why I love it. I adore how all the books are so interconnected so when I was really disappointed by the end of Assassin’s Quest because it felt anti-climactic, I came to appreciate it later after I’d read The Tawny Man trilogy. I was never a big of a fan of the Liveship Traders trilogy as I was with the Fitz books but I’m currently re-reading the books and I appreciate them a lot more now I’ve read all the books and I know how it all fits in.
@bran79154 жыл бұрын
@@hobbleit the reason why I haven't quite moved on yet with the books is because the next trilogy doesn't quite sound what I like and it's not involving Fitz, but I keep hearing good things about it and I've heard the stories all tie in in the end. Now I'm quite excited to read them! I'm just buddy reading the first three with a friend, and then we're going to move on with the books.
@hobbleit4 жыл бұрын
Bran I’m appreciating Liveship more the second time round. My mind hasn’t quite changed about the characters which is why I don’t personally like those books as much as the Fitz books but the story is excellent.

I only read the Farseer Trilogy in 2019, as I’m trying to read various popular fantasy stories from the 90s. It might be because my cousin told me all the books are wrongly named beforehand (really shouldn’t have assassin in the titles), but I enjoyed them. Her writing and character development over the whole trilogy left a lasting impression on me. I’m not sure what you heard about Robin Hobb or if you just assumed it’ll be “epic” because of the titles, but she’s not a super action driven writer.

Even if you don‘t end up liking Robin Hobb‘s Farseer Trilogy please give Livieship Traders a try. It is quite different to the first three. It‘s basically a family drama during a revolution but in a fantasy world. And it also has pirates. I just think that those books will appear to more people. Don‘t get me wrong: Realm of the Elderlings is my favorite series and I don‘t think there are any characters that feel more real or closer to my heart than Fitz and the Fool. His story just might not be for as many people as Liveships.

I completely agree - I think today’s fantasy is a lot more fast paced than books 10 years ago. I actually kinda miss the slower build ups - sometimes it feels like modern fantasy the authors are like “ ok that just happened ...what’s next whats next......um THIS! THIS IS HAPPENING.... oh dang... what about the ending ?? I can’t top that????....” and then we end up with a ton of fantasy with crappy endings

Assassins Apprentice is prob Hobbs worst book (of what I’ve read), not that it’s bad, just that it’s not up to the hype/standard of her other books. The Farseer trilogy picks up in the next book, but her Live ship Traders series is one of my all time fave series. So even if you decide you’re not a fan of Farseer, still read Live Ship! (It can also be read on its own) Also, even in Hobbs more action-packed books I think she’s more of a character-driven writer so some books are a bit slow - but in a good way imo, though it’s not everyone’s cup of tea

Then I read The Four Agreements by Don Miguel Ruiz which was also short and sweet. The Imitation of Christ by Thomas Kempis, very positive and uplifting. I reread Animal Farm by George Orwell and did an annotation in my book, 5/5 of course. I listened to the audiobook for Steve-O: Professional Idiot by Steven Glover and it was really good, funny and heartbreaking but mostly a positive experience. It’s been a while since I’ve read Matilda, but some little kids actually prefer that you talk to them like adults outside of playing/exciting situations. I mean, you have to use words they’ll understand, and you shouldn’t be telling them things inappropriate for their age, but my cousins around that age no longer wanted to be seen as “babies”. Idk the specific situation in the book, but it might have been intentional on Dahl’s part

Hey Emily, this question is not related to the video at all, but I needed to ask it anyway. Do you think it's a good idea for someone that English is not their first language to start reading adult fantasy or sci-fi or should they stick to YA ? Great video as well.

There's no reason you should not read what you feel like reading! Some books are more difficult to read depending on the writing style of the author (Ursula K Leguin will make you practice your English for sure lol) but your English seems fine so don't overthink it :)

Try Brandon Sanderson!! The Mistborn trilogy was the first adult fantasy (and one of the first books in general) that I read in english and I had no problems! So engaging

Ageism s***** indeed, I could not keep following the series after Foundryside too. One question, are new challenges happening in the Goodreads group in 2020?

I would love to, I'm just not sure what exactly to do. Any ideas?

@@BookswithEmilyFox Great! I am planning to read some of those, when are you reading each of them?

I mentioned for some of them if I'm planning to read them in Feb/March/April but the rest will mostly be announced in TBR! With all the challenges I'm not sure when right now!

Am I the only one that realized how Freudian authors are? Crazy obsessions with children and their parents.
