I've always loved those kind of slash voicings, it feels so much more open and broad as a sus2 sound. I feel like the structure of the harmonic series definitely has a big factor in that sound, since you are replacing a -14 cent deviation with a +2 cent deviation, it just sounds much purer - it feels like painting with less contrast and broader strokes, therefore allowing it to be used in more contexts because that structure is ultimately more willing to be shaped by the notes around it (most importantly bass notes as Jacob was demonstrating) / more easily taking on the role of being color tones.

Damn that’s actually a really interesting way to analyze it! I was thinking that on top of having a triad, the major 7th interval makes the voicing really pop while still maintaining a bright characteristic, which is why it’s able to fit into so many things

The second last track on clown core's van ends with a similar feeling, which is fascinating. But they "resolve" it with a third and that sounds good.

My favorite chord, but that's no secret. The other thing about it is the major 3rd is actually adding a minor interval up to the 5th which I think is detracting from the major tonality than just having it as 1257 which as JC says, is a major triad 1 step brighter than the root with the root in it, so with the 3rd taken out you have what I'd call an actually more major sounding chord than with the 3rd in the chord, how about that. Also the only remotely "minor" interval there is the 4th interval between the 2nd to 5th which is 2 steps brighter than the 3rd-5th as a minor 3rd, so really the whole 1257 chord is sounding more major than a 1357, and with that, the 2nd to 7th is brighter than a 3rd to 5th also as a 6th interval. To me this further reinstates the notion than the 2nd is a major interval and not a neutral one. Even 125 on its own sounds major or "half major" to me, similar to 1569, and I think the harmonic series would agree. As it's pointed out below it's also more in tune, so in 12TET the major 7th is still +14 relative to the 5th at -2, but +12 instead of +14 to the root, also the Root to 2nd is now -4 instead of +14 from Root to 3rd, and therefore 2nd to 5th is +2 instead of -2 in Just Intonation. So the sus2 part is better tuned to the harmonic series overall, just like a sus4 chord, or 1457, same thing going on. It's funny cuz an out of tune major triad still exists in the chord but just shifting it the next step brighter adds all the wonder.

I love playing a minor penta over a major dominant chord. Thats another way to break through the min/maj polarity. Or play the scale I.E in D F F# G# A B C# D. You can play both D major and minor, throw in that juicy #4th. I feel like thats the only scale that has every chord color. Is it a mode of the harmonic major scale?
@rahul_krishna983 жыл бұрын
Absolutely lovely! Please upload the whole thing if possible!! Also for the bass note, you just change the note from the root(?) to the fifth lower, if I got that correctly? (sounded very warm when jacob played it)
@AlessandroSistiMusic3 жыл бұрын
That's right - so if you're playing some kind of C major thingy, you'd add an F in the bass. Jacob has talked about this before in a slightly less compact way. I think it was in part 2 or part 3 of his interviews with June from a few years ago.

The last point is the best imo. Major thirds should be the most peaceful interv besides the fourth and fifth and octave. Best played or sung by instruments that can adjust. No one will complain if they hear a justly tuned major third every now and again!

This 4 note voicing is the key signature sound of many of the brilliant compositions by Russ Ferrante, from YellowJackets. If you don't know him, run and find his music!!! He's a version of Jacob, but don't jam one single song with too many brilliant ideas at once.
@davidfleuchaus3 жыл бұрын
Generous of you to share this. Thank you June. So why? Why 1257? I’ve noticed what will end up being the next step forward in the evolution of harmony as it is experienced by the general public. Unison to Gregorian chants to triadic to… but while academics pushed harmony, supposedly forward, society - the actual culture of our times - has rejected harmonies that stepped up the harmonic sequence too rapidly. I believe that when the future looks back that it will find that these current years the third is being messed with in a way that is exciting to our ears but as a spice, not a staple. The first time I saw this was a no-third add9 or add2. That was an innocuous and pleasant one like a palette cleanser. When I started hearing 1345 or 145+10 then that was when I heard the next evolutionary step. But 1257 is so compelling that I think the step is the common element in all of these, namely, altering the third. Society is bored with the ubiquity of the third.

In my opinion because I study the Barry Harris method I think this fits well because of the same reason he always says to play a g major 6th diminished chord over AC major 7. Even when adding the 6th of the g major 7 which is the third of c major 7 one can use the diminished of the g major 7 on the upbeats to use the very Harris style passing tone tonalities which all work because of the diminished chords that they share in common interesting stuff to check out on the deeper level

I'm going to have to disagree with Jacob on this one. I low-key hate 3rd-less voicings. Church musicians do this all the time, and it just tilts me the wrong way. It's so unsatisfying for me. Now I'm not saying I just want to hear triads all day - I'm all about complexity. Something about sus2 voicing though are... sus idk

Man, I disagree with lots of things here….. I love the Cmaj7 chord, think it’s very versatile and emotional. Csus2maj7 (G/C) is an ambiguous disruptive chord, should rarely be used, unless trying to show off. Rules should only be broken sparingly, otherwise you get a bunch of weird music that stand out for being different other than good. Also C slightly out of tune is an excuse/ bragging, or you should never use C and E together. And what does it mean Csus2maj7 sounds good because it has more space… 1267 has even more space, doesn’t mean it’s good. Csus2maj7 sounds like the mud on the road after rain, it has its places, but Cmaj7 is a much moderate chord.
