The way I heard it, when Congress was talking about passing this holiday they said it was to commemorate the day the last slaves were freed not the day of the Emancipation Proclamation or 13th amendment. This June 19th happened two or three years after the Emancipation because it took time after the Civil War to get the word out. Of course the news media and slave owners on the outskirts of the slave territories did not want to give up their "property" and obey the new laws. Why don't they have a holiday on the date for the Emancipation Proclamation or the official act declaring the slaves be freed? The truth is after every war it takes a while to get the word to the outskirts of the country. It happened in the Revolutionary War and it happened in Vietnam and it happens in every war now. A lot of times some of the soldiers don't believe in and keep shooting. Just like the internet you can't believe anything you hear right away because it could be a trick and then you would be court-martialed for AWOL. I don't think this needs to be a holiday because it's not an official time and date it's just a happenstance. Personally, I would like to have a holiday for the Emancipation Proclamation to commemorate the country following through on a promise made in the US Constitution of ending The Peculiar Institution 20 years after the Constitution was to be ratified. We were the first country to put a promise like that in federal documents let alone our nation's constitution! That was truly a big step for mankind period going forward I wish a lot of these people screaming for reparations whether white or black, need to get together an organized the freedom of the 30 plus million slaves still in existence on every hemisphere. After the Civil War there was a bill to give the freed slaves 40 acres and a mule to farm themselves but the Democrats killed the bill. They had a plan to get all the power back can't smash the Republican Party by 1880. But why don't we celebrate the black congressman and state senators during reconstruction? That's right in the 1870s there were freed slaves that taught themselves to read and became members of the government, duly elected. The Democrats stormed Congress and round the block numbers out the door with clubs made out of 4x4's. And that was just a start.

@@brendaarnold8485 I am conservative, ma’am. I am a Trump supporter. I have actually never been a Democrat, but some of the things the Dems pushed to onto the Black community, as a younger woman, I wasn’t against until I learned better. I vote my convictions, and my faith (as a Christian follower) is the reason why I tend to have more conservative viewpoints. Thanks for watching and subbing.
