It is!

For now. The ensuing training might get downright ugly for that poor dog though. ;)

What is difference between junior hunt test and puppy stakes?

A hunt test is where the dogs are tested against a standard. Puppy stakes are usually a field trial. Only one dog wins the blue ribbon.

Junior tests need to ramp up to 2021. There should not be catchable birds used, especially not pen raised quail. There are more quail caught, chased and caught etc. than anything else in JH. This teaches a dog that birds can be caught and don't really have to be pointed. I NEVER run a junior event because it UNtrains a young dog. Then as the dog matures, I guess you're supposed to teach him that he can't catch birds (should hold point) AFTER he has caught lots of birds?!?!? Are they supposed to just forget having caught them or do we now correct the bad habit WE instilled? Doesn't make much sense to me but...?

The point of the junior test is to get people interested in the beginner stages. It entices people and encourages them to get their dogs out. I think its a great start. They have the senior and master hunt tests for advanced polished dog work

Nicely done. I STRONGLY recommend all hunters try at least Junior Hunter. It will make you and your dog better hunters. You may be doing things/mistakes you don't realize and Tests will call your attention to them.

Skip JH. It proves absolutely nothing. I like to think that a breeder of integrity with a vested interest and some pride in their breeding program would expect MUCH more of their gun dogs. It ISN'T a place to start because it ruins young dogs by rewarding them for chasing (and catching) birds.
