If Brian France had been running the show back then he would've banned drafting because it wasn't Nascars idea.

My great grandpa had a very similar outlook and way of life to Junior Johnson. He raced motorcycles on dirt tracks and rode the wall of death for the local fair each year into his 50s. That era of men and women were a different breed of human beings.

The 59 Chevy had a 348. Chevy didn't have the 409 until 61. They were the same basic engine.
@SwankeyMonkey
@SwankeyMonkey 6 жыл бұрын
Chevy didn't make a 327 in '55, the 327 didn't come out till '62. And it wasn't offered in the Bel Air with a four-barrel carb till '64. Howevaaa, in 1964, the correct ignition timing would be four degrees before top-dead-center.

It was stroked to 409 Cubic inches form the stock 348. Now days they stroke the 351 to 408 cubic inches. Which is really 410 cubic inches. But the beach boys made it famous...So they left it at 409 cubic inches...

Being a dumb kid I got my first car 72 Barracuda good aerodynamic car,more on that later,well trying to keep up with my friends in the town where I lived I made some mods myself,I put on headers,because they ain't know sweeter sound then aV8 exhaust going thru tuned headers,plus a nice top end boost,shift improved kit in the transmission,that helped a bunch,and I lived right by a six lane highway that was my test ground and my play ground,so next I started seeing what this drafting stuff was all about,because a lot of times trucks would be pulling off the highway and I had the long flats in front of me so I started drafting everything mostly tracter trailers I start at a moderate speed and throttle position till I got good at staying in behind the car for as long as I could and not hit it,till I got timing down giving it more gas to shoot me out of the broken thin air left from the vehicle in front of me,I will never forget the first time I got my timing right and and hit full throttle and stayed in the draft for as long as I could as I was pulling out half way the engine revs went like 1500rpm higher and shot me down the road like a cannon,it was like u got hit from behind,I think I went from 70 mph to 90 mph in two seconds,ok I said to myself this drafting shit is real as it gets,then I started practicing side drafting learning the right time to pull away from the vehicle next to u that's just ahead it don't have the same blast of speed but u can get buy if u do it at the right time,if u wait to long u loose the side draft effect...it actually shakes the vehicle to the side of u when ur breaking free back into your own air....thanks be safe arrive alive

My first car was a 71 charger 383. That car taught me how to work on cars, because if I couldn't get it going, Icouldn't go out girl chasing on Friday night. That was a motivator...

@@leejackson4724 had you not got a POS dodge you wouldn't have had to work on it... Good experience though. My 1st car was a 79 Datsun 280 ZX thing ran like a top and never needed anything car was a blast a tank and a panty dropper all in one. And would dust 85% of Muscle Cars on the road I later went to a ss chevelle and regretted every bit of it thing ran like shit and wasnt half as quick as the Datsun but we live and learn and no I'm not a Muscle hater I'm american Muscle 1st all day everyday but in order for one to actually be fast you need to do a lot of work to em..

.no 409 at this time.never one built for 7000 rpm.
@mwilliamshs
@mwilliamshs 5 жыл бұрын
Jr's 409 was a stroked 348 from a truck. Stock 409s with solid lifters can spin 6,300 rpm so a massaged, balanced, ported one could very likely turn 7,000 especially coming down a banked turn.
@mwilliamshs
@mwilliamshs 4 жыл бұрын
@osp80 My point is there was no 409 at this time. Junior's was built from a stock 348 that was stroked.
