That was amazing! What kind of rod and reel are you using? Also what kind of bait or lures are you using? I'm new to fishing on the jetties. Thanks

We use salmon rods like the ones they use in Alaska to troll for salmon. They are 9 Foot rods and they WHIP a fish really quickly because of how much they end up fighting the extra length of the rod. Also, the extra length is needed for casting. Then we have a 7000 size Sabalos reel which in my book is the best big game spinning outfit you can get for the price. I then put either 40 or 50-pound braid on it because you have to keep the tarpon from getting out of the jetty. If they run you around either point of the jetty you are finished. Then I connect a 15-foot fluorocarbon leader which is used for abrasion resistance against rocks (because braid cuts the second it touches a rock) and against the tarpons rough mouth. The 15-foot leader is also essential to hand fight the fish at the end because you can sit there with a tarpon 15 to 20 feet from the rocks for 30 minutes if you don't have the extra pull. Then we use either a twitch bait or soft plastic that mimics a live mullet or ladyfish. white bucktail jigs also work really well for them. Hitting an outgoing tide or an incoming tide at the point of the jetty on the begging of an incoming is your best bet. Tarpon are at the jetties starting in May and ending in early November or late October. They are there thickest between August and September. I hope that helps. You need plenty of line and a 60 to 80-pound fluorocarbon leader or the tarpon's mouth will wear through the line every time.

Austin Jackson cool! I will try that for sure. Thanks for sharing your knowledge.

Great video! I'd love to catch a tarpon, but hard to do out of Houston/Galveston. Appreciate the advice on your setups as well. Tight lines!!

Huge, where the measurements?
@southtexasfishingshow87727 жыл бұрын
Couldn't get to the measuring tape, it was down the jetties next to my friend's backpack. We didn't want to risk it dying. No tarpon has ever been turned in by a junior angler in Texas so there was no doubt.
