I think that was why they attacked, actually. Bok's son, I think his name was Flax, discovered that the Federation didn't use currency after the USS Stargazer happened upon them as they were both conducting a survey of the location (it had a large deposit of dilithium, hence the Ferengi interest). He thought the Federation was insane because of it and proceeded to attack the USS Stargazer. The book also explains why the Ferengi were considered so dangerous in the early days: the Grand Nagus also thought the lack of currency was a sign of insanity and actively built up the military strength and had rumours spread deliberately to put themselves into a stronger position once the Federation made full contact.

I have an idea on the "rocks". Maybe the bridge is well insulated with something like glass foam insulation and when they receive damage it breaks apart into rock like chunks. Need that insulation for when you lose life support. Would prolong the crew for a while before freezing to death. Just a thought, look it up.
@allmightyweakling4167
@allmightyweakling4167 4 жыл бұрын
If you look back to TOS episode the Balance of terror there is a scene when they explain what plasma does to whatever metal is used in ship construction. Those "rocks" are probably pieces of metal, melted bcz of plasma conduits overloading.

that's not rocks... that's whatever plastic they use to make the layer that covers the bulkheads. that carpet they step on, on the bridge? probably that stuff underneath it. those metal strips running around the outer rim of the bridge of the E? that stuff in between them. the roof panels? that's not wood, that's probably that stuff.

@tburrows357

I always felt like the the Stargazer / Constellation class ships were originally built as heavy cruisers with redundant back up systems for optimal combat survival. We know 4 warp nacelles didn’t make any ship faster then two. But if damage taken you can guarantee you could still have warp capability. As well with on the star gazer as you pointed out it had the same impulse drives just turned sideways and there was two. As well as two forward torpedo launchers. In all honesty this was a ship designed for combat and survivability. Of course like most military projects just because of all the redundancy in systems would have made it a resource heavy and costly ship to produce. So not surprised starfleet would have gone back to ships with only 2 warp nacelles. Came down to quantity over quality. Anyways just my two sense. Still one of my favourite ships in cannon though.

Yeah. It’s a big one. And the warp gondolas are thicker. Thicker and girthier. Also the saucer section is thicker and bigger. It’s all big and girthy. Rocks! Today there is a type of insulation sometimes called rock wool insulation. It is highly efficient, fire proof and made of rock mineral the same way they make fiberglass insulation. It comes in stiff batts that can cut to fit but can not be bent much. Considering the cold of space and the high energy surges that happen when energy weapons get through the shields and contact the ship, Star Fleet most assuredly uses something similar. Not only would it help prevent and control the spread of fire it would probably act like a ablative armor for the interior by requiring an explosive energy discharge to break through the insulation before being released into the compartment.

When I saw this episode 27 or more years ago, I was 12 and thought that is the dumbest maneuver ever. Other episodes established that they have faster than light sensors... Today thinking about it... Assume the Ferengi took battle damage that disabled their primary and secondary subspace sensors, and the USS Stargazer was able to detect that with her intact subspace sensors. Realizing that the Ferengi were limited to light speed sensors, Picard devised a maneuver to take advantage of that unexpected weakness and the rest is Trek History. Not cannon but makes it work better for me. My 12 year old self is now satisfied.

They are not rocks but chard chunks of polymer insulation/structural foam that is designed to absorb energy and prevent fires and is sprayed all over the things that explode and catch fire to reduce the harm caused by building a star ship out of explosives. That's my explanation hope the use it.

Ok, thing about the rocks: Those explosions are supposed to be plasma conduits, right? That's the in cannon reason why people die: plasma discharge. They use plasma to transfer power and electricity: EPS relays are Electro-Plasma System relays or some such shit. Why they're using super-heated gas so close to where people work and sit is beyond me but whatever. ANYWAY, the ROCKS: The plasma is really bad to breathe once it's reverted back to normal gas, the borg queen even disintegrates in it in first contact. My guess is that the rocks are some kind of safety measure that solidifies the plasma into something rubbery and harmless as soon as its burst from the conduit. Yeah it looks weird, but you DON'T BREATHE it, at least.

OK, but that is still an awful lot of plasma coursing all around workstations all the time.
@earth2bob
@earth2bob 5 жыл бұрын
@@DrWhom I agree. I still think they should have some kind of plasma to electrified circuit relay system, that way the fourth state of matter doesn't risk blasting everyone in the face every time, but I think that'd be less dramatic or something? And we all know what drama queens star fleet engineers are... :P

I like that ship. And on a related note, I won a game of attack wing using the Hathaway model. Coincidentally enough, because I used the Picard maneuver.

Biggest lost opportunity for a Trek series is those 22 YEARS aboard the Stargazer with Picard at the helm. Always found it funny all the heat the Tos crew got re age, sticking with the 1701 so long, etc from 2266- 2280s. When Picard was in the same position and ship, caprain of the Stargazer, for 22 years!

Interesting little bit of continuity. In " The Measure of a Man". Not only having used the same set as the Stargazer bridge. Captain Phillipa Louvois was involved with the prosecution in the court-martial of Picard over the loss of the Stargazer.

Constellation Class- a brilliant Kit-Bashed model with a rich backstory and scenic FX. There are versions of the ship that is missing torpedo launchers both top and bottom. A unsung ship and workhorse of the beginning and end of the 23rd century until the end of the 24th. The saucer and 4 nacelle is proving to be a versatile ship for any kind of mission including deep space exploration. Before the Intrepid class Voyager fend and survived in parts unknown the Constellation Class would be the same factor. In the fictional world of Trek. I would command a Constellation Class.

Who else wishes there was a series made of Stargazer? I'd kind of like to see what happenes in Starfleet away from the spotless decks and elite crews of the shiney end. The crew on a rustbucket are likely to have much more interesting character flaws. They'd probably also, hopefully, be less prone to sanctimonious lecturing than what we've had lately.

HEY! Did you ever notice how the enterprise D's bridge setup is actually the ship's structure in reverse? The ops stations are the nacelles and the rail is shaped,loosely,like the neck and saucer section! Any camera angle where you are looking at the crew,effectively from the view screen,and you'll see it. You should make a,albeit short,video on it. :)
