I think that was why they attacked, actually. Bok's son, I think his name was Flax, discovered that the Federation didn't use currency after the USS Stargazer happened upon them as they were both conducting a survey of the location (it had a large deposit of dilithium, hence the Ferengi interest). He thought the Federation was insane because of it and proceeded to attack the USS Stargazer. The book also explains why the Ferengi were considered so dangerous in the early days: the Grand Nagus also thought the lack of currency was a sign of insanity and actively built up the military strength and had rumours spread deliberately to put themselves into a stronger position once the Federation made full contact.

I have an idea on the "rocks". Maybe the bridge is well insulated with something like glass foam insulation and when they receive damage it breaks apart into rock like chunks. Need that insulation for when you lose life support. Would prolong the crew for a while before freezing to death. Just a thought, look it up.

I always felt like the the Stargazer / Constellation class ships were originally built as heavy cruisers with redundant back up systems for optimal combat survival. We know 4 warp nacelles didn’t make any ship faster then two. But if damage taken you can guarantee you could still have warp capability. As well with on the star gazer as you pointed out it had the same impulse drives just turned sideways and there was two. As well as two forward torpedo launchers. In all honesty this was a ship designed for combat and survivability. Of course like most military projects just because of all the redundancy in systems would have made it a resource heavy and costly ship to produce. So not surprised starfleet would have gone back to ships with only 2 warp nacelles. Came down to quantity over quality. Anyways just my two sense. Still one of my favourite ships in cannon though.

Rocks! Today there is a type of insulation sometimes called rock wool insulation. It is highly efficient, fire proof and made of rock mineral the same way they make fiberglass insulation. It comes in stiff batts that can cut to fit but can not be bent much. Considering the cold of space and the high energy surges that happen when energy weapons get through the shields and contact the ship, Star Fleet most assuredly uses something similar. Not only would it help prevent and control the spread of fire it would probably act like a ablative armor for the interior by requiring an explosive energy discharge to break through the insulation before being released into the compartment.

When I saw this episode 27 or more years ago, I was 12 and thought that is the dumbest maneuver ever. Other episodes established that they have faster than light sensors... Today thinking about it... Assume the Ferengi took battle damage that disabled their primary and secondary subspace sensors, and the USS Stargazer was able to detect that with her intact subspace sensors. Realizing that the Ferengi were limited to light speed sensors, Picard devised a maneuver to take advantage of that unexpected weakness and the rest is Trek History. Not cannon but makes it work better for me. My 12 year old self is now satisfied.

Interesting little bit of continuity. In " The Measure of a Man". Not only having used the same set as the Stargazer bridge. Captain Phillipa Louvois was involved with the prosecution in the court-martial of Picard over the loss of the Stargazer.

I love the STargazer. I like the Thick rim as it made me think of it as a carrier
