Welcome back! Great vid! Worth mentioning: OTC recommends you have your scanner plugged into your lighter before starting your car. Dont plug it in while it's running. They're afraid something may get messed up. And anytime circuits A & B on the ALDL have a scanner ( or paperclip) plugged into them while running, GM vehicles automatically slightly increase timing/ idle speed, which can make diagnosing your vehicle problematic. You want your car running like it normally does, right? Your OTC automatically goes into diagnostic mode. If you read the manual you should be able to select Road-test Mode. This mode will not increase timing/ idle speed. The car will run like it normally would if A & B in the ALDL weren't jumped. Hope this helps.

I'm so glad to see you have an old OTC scan tool, Brian. That thing will really really show you what the hell is going on, especially on these OBD I cars. GM was way ahead of the competition back in the day with the live data stream you're able to get. The BLM - block learn is the equivalent of "long term fuel trim" on OBD2, this is the long term adjustment of the fuel curve to bring the oxygen sensor into switching mode. The INT - integrator, is the short term adjustment. 128 is 0% off of the pre-programmed fuel curve. You should see BLM just a hint more rich than 128 thanks to E10 needing a touch more than straight fuel, and the INT should be around 128, going up and down as its running. This scan tool certainly puts the ECM into "bypass mode" to test some solenoids and relays, which is why you're seeing the cooling fan turn on. Almost all ECM controlled stuff will do that. Let me know if you'd like more insight, I used to work on a ton of 80s GM stuff back in the day. All that aside.... damn I'm happy to see this beast running and that #5 decided to have compression again. Hopefully some day you get to call it yours, or sell it off since you put all that hard work into it.

Whats going on. Really appreciate all of your feedback on here and letting me know what I am looking at here. You can only do so much research on these older systems and need to speak with those who actually used them like yourself. I may have other questions in the future on this car as it has already given me issues since this video LOL. Thanks for watching and for your very useful information here. Yeah I am very happy 5 came back! What are the odds! Seems to run pretty good now but wait until you see the next couple videos to wrap up this series. Thanks

@@ClassicGBodyGarage Talk about LUCK on #5!! How come I never have that kind of luck LOL. I wasn't trying to aim my comment at your test at all, I just kinda threw it out there. A lot of times guys have no idea to open the throttle when testing. Just was putting it out there as general knowledge and hope I didn't seem like an ass, it certainly was not my intent. I apologize in any case, for the misunderstanding, as I should have been more detailed with my original statement to avoid confusion. That type of scan tool is the first one I was ever exposed too. Which was top of the line in the early 90s. With that said, I am not sure you actually need a scan tool to diagnose or fix your drivability problem. (Although it can assist in helping.) Because normally you can do things like change out the fuel filter, and do a tune up. Which will go a long ways in addressing the driveability issue. Then things like having the injectors cleaned. Making sure the lines are not kinked or plugged up. (Especially inspecting the rubber fuel hose that connects the fuel pump to the pickup tube in the tank.) As for the number five cylinder, there could have been some loose carbon on the valve(s) or the rings and cylinder could have been washed down with fuel, causing the compression to be low in that cylinder. Which pumping some oil into the cylinder from a oil pump can would go a long ways to addressing the low compression number. Also washing out the air intake with some type of cleaning spray has always helped remove any carbon stuck in the fuel system. (Needless to say, the smallest problem is normally the one that causes the biggest issue.)
@ClassicGBodyGarage
@ClassicGBodyGarage 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching and all of your feedback details, very informative. Please check out the first 4 videos in the series as I replaced the tank, lines hard and rubber, pump, sending unit and filter. Worked my way up front with the injection then. I also did a dry and wet compression test and thankfully number 5 came back over time. The scanner came in handy although not terribly complex, it did help me monitor readings that I needed to pinpoint the lean issue also make sure the temps were in check. Thanks again.
@TheCrewChief374
@TheCrewChief374 2 жыл бұрын
@@ClassicGBodyGarage Well I had already watch those other videos. So I know what you have already done. Needless to say, I have already worked on more than one of these Grand Nationals. In my time as a professional automotive technician. Which we faced the same set of problems back when this type of vehicle was not as old. So I was providing ways of addressing these problems. From the aspect of not having access to a scan tool. Since a scan tool is only going to give a person an indication. Of what possibly could be going on, and not what could actually be the problem. (Because these indications could still be due to a mechanical problem and not a sensor malfunction. It could also be simply a bad ground or it could indicate something like carbon blockage somewhere in the intake or heads. Or even a simple vaccuum leak. Which are all just some of the things I have found to be problems when I was diagnosing similar issues with this same model car.) Which even know a scan tool can be helpful in assisting in indicting what is possibly wrong. One can also with a good volt ohm meter, a test light, fuel pressure gauge and compression gauge. Still be able to diagnose a drivability problem with their own automobile. Of course, I have pulled the fuel tank to clean out bad fuel before, and blown out the fuel lines. So much of what you have done, I have already been down this road before. So I understand it is not exactly going to be the same issue every time.

The fans were coming on at factory spec and now they come on earlier with the new chip in the ECM. I don't know what stat is in it but yes when I replace it, it will be with a 160.

Not the entire video but there are parts of it where my camera likes to do it's own thing. Appreciate your time watching.

@@ClassicGBodyGarage other than that it's a good video, my only suggestion would have been to clean up the top of the intake prior to pulling the fuel system. Too much opportunity for trash to get in

@@johnhull6363 I blew the loose stuff off with the compressor, the wetness you see if the fuel from the rail. I made sure as little as possible went in the injector ports but no way to prevent nothing to enter. Thanks again for the feedback. Happy New Year!
