Kevin, I had a distributor stuck in the block of my 77 F250 (460). I got it loose without too much trouble, you should try this! Run the motor, and let it get up to temperature. With the engine still running, take a couple of cans of air duster, turn them upside down, and empty the liquid co2 onto the stem of the distributor right above where it goes into the block. Once they're empty, the stem should be super frosty. Grab the stem tight at the bottom with a big pair of vice grips and tap it firmly in each direction with a dead blow hammer. The temperature difference should let it loosen up just enough to get a hair of movement. As soon as you see it budge (even a tiny bit), shut the engine off, spray it down with penetrating oil, and keep working it back and forth. The tiny bit of movement will get bigger and bigger - keep adding oil and hitting it in both directions!

At the time though they were trying to get numbers up for the invasion more than they were trying to teach anything.

@neilbarnes35572 жыл бұрын
That was a fun episode, Kevin - thanks! If I might make a suggestion about driving relays: rather than running a permanent ground to the coil and a live feed from the switch, do it the other way around. The coil gets a permanent 12v (or switched from the ignition circuit) and you carry the other side of the coil to a switch which grounds it. The big advantage there is that you don't need to carry an unfused live cable through bulkheads, and if the control/switch wire does short to ground all it does is turn on the relay. (Also, it's often easier to find a convenient ground in the cabin than a suitable +12v).
@alanprather83992 жыл бұрын
that's the way I generally do it as well.
@LynxStarAuto2 жыл бұрын
This is the way I was taught as well. Plus, it doesn't kill your ignition switch because less chance of a back feed to the ignition. The one doing the work here would be the ground side switch.
@Turbochargedtwelve2 жыл бұрын
Keep in mind fans and all inductive loads have really high inrush currents. They’re basically short circuits when initially turned on. The rule of thumb is that the start current is double the running current. This is a problem for the contacts in the relay, they’ll get burned up over time. You need to use very chunky relays and or use one for each fan. You can get factory fan relay modules from late model stuff too.

Talking about relays... my 86 burban had a 6.2 diesel. When the $400 glow plug controller gave out in thE woods I jumped it with a wire that almost melted when doing so. Lol So when I got home I ran 12g wire into the cab to a horn button to run the glow plug controller. AFTER I found out I run a huge fire risk, I then used a starter relay instead. 👍
@Turbochargedtwelve2 жыл бұрын
When you start messing with relays it is a really good idea to draw a circuit diagram before doing any actual wiring. The system quickly can become hard to keep straight in your head and then you can leave the drawing with the car to help troubleshoot later if you have issues. Bonus points if you label the parts.

Kevin I've been following your channel for a couple of years now (Old man from Denmark in Europe). You're an excellent teacher. Your little piece on relays in this video is a good example of this. May I suggest, that you find/hire someone to edit small 'short' videos from your existing videos - explaining such concepts? I believe you have enough of that type of content to edit an entire course, and sell it - for instance via Udemy or some place like that. Or you could just add these small short explaining-videos to your existing channel. The point is that very few KZbinrs can match your talent and abilities. You teach well. And it's a shame if it remains hidden in your excellent content.

You can get relays with BOTH Normally Open (NO) and Normally Closed (NC) contacts (double throw/DT relays), and relays with more than 1 independent set of contacts (Pole). On my 47 Oldsmobile when I added turn signals I wanted to use the park lamps as turn signals, but also still work as park lamps. So I created an XOR relay logic circuit to do that. 1 DPDT (double pole double throw) relay with the coil driven by the park lamp hot, 2 SPDT (single pole double throw) relays with the coils driven by the R and L outputs of the turn signal switch. Basically the relay contact wiring is like a hallway light switch pair where both switches control one light. I feed power into the wiper contacts of the park lamp relay then feed the NO of the 1st pole park relay to the NC of the L turn signal relay and the NC of park to the NO of Left, then the Left wiper feeds the Signal bulb. The right relay connects to the Second pole of the park lamp relay in the same way the left connects to the 1st pole. It has worked great for a couple of years now. Where feasible it's nice to switch ground on relays and other loads...That way if your switch wire ever rubs through on the body or chassis your car wont catch fire or blow fuses, you'll just have whatever is switched stuck on...Also you don't have to look for a hot wire in the cab and worry if it's constant power or ignition switched (though sometimes it's nice to have things turn off with the ignition and switching positive has it's advantages in that case).

So Kevin is spot on with the relay, the big reason to use it, especially in the situation for running something like electric fans that run high amps off a switch, is that alot of switches wont handle that amperage and will burn out, i know this from running that exact setup before without a relay. Lol So the relay is perfect to not run high amps to low amp switched and ext.

An even better way to wire the relay control circuit is to connect then positive terminal of the coil to the hot input, then run a wire from the negative side of the coil to the switch and a ground wire from the other side of the switch to chassis. This eliminates an unfused hot wire to the switch and one less wire!

I have to say I had a '66 Chevy shortbed fleetside that I shoved a 396 big block in. I changed the stat to a 165 degree due to overheating. In the meantime I found and retrofitted a fan shroud. Changed the real thin blade flexfan to a Derale flex fan. After doing all this it helped a lot but still ran over 200 degrees. This is when I met an old timer that use to own a radiator shop. He told me that 165 degree stat will definitely open sooner but if your already having overheating issues it just got worse. A 165 will open to soon and water is not staying in the radiator long enough to cool off. It's just like running without a thermostat. Told me to run a 195 stat. It gives more time for water to sit in the radiator being cooled by the wind blowing across the fins from your fan. I ran 195 in it and it never got over 200 after that. Even in traffic sitting still. My two cents on wisdom I've learned.

Great information on the use of relais! That's always one of the first thing I do on my old cars. Makes a big difference on head lights too. I never knew those numbers on the relais are an international standard, I always thought that's a german thing only (e.g. 30 is permanent power directly from battery, 15 is ignition, 85 is ground on the relais coil, 86 positive on the relais coil and so on...)
@WhiskeyRiverRifleman2 жыл бұрын
In case anybody is interested the noise that power steering pump made is very bad it is the power steering pump bearing eating itself. Fun fact you do not have to ever hear that noise after repairing a power steering fluid leak. All you have to do is Jack the front end of the car up so both tires are off the ground, now jump in with the engine off turn the steering wheel lock to lock 25 times back and forth. Do check the level I've been dropped a lot put some more in stairs back and forth a couple more times and check the fluid again. Now that you have bled all the air out of the system started up and it won't make a single noise and you'll have good power steering.

Hi Kevin, thank you for answering a question I've had since childhood. Why do relays click. Love the content and explanation of what why and how. Especially on simple yet important bits.

As a Wisconsinite, I absolutely agree that our road are bullshit. Try out the center lane of I894 in Milwaukee. The westbound section had a multiple holes the cars would scrape their rockers on when they hit them.

Hi Kevin and co Love these revival videos! I have been caught before, relying on the marks on the harmonic balancer The old ones tend to “slip” on the rubber Making tuning with a timing light impossible Might be worth checking

It's a 460 Ford if I had to bet I'd say it sheared the roll pin on the distributor gear they don't like to revved above 5 grand I've seen it happen on five different 429/460 engines back when I ran mud bog trucks they usually jam up on the shaft and still run but ping like crazy and are impossible to get the timing set and will run hot

Hey Kevin I do believe that the proper way to bleed power steering is with wheels in the air and the engine off. I read that somewhere and it bleeds it with out foaming it out. 🤔 worth try sometime.👍

In the 1980's we built a 1974 Montie Carlo and 1969 GTO 4x4s. I miss the fun we had in them. It must be a Wisconsin thing if you guys want to part with that Caddy I'm interested thank you. Eric B.
