My favorite words when I see a vintage lens is "barrel wear" "slight mold" "scratch on front element". It means I am about to get a huge discount. And if you are wondering about mold, I ask the seller to show me a photo of the inside against light, and I look up KZbin videos of how to clean the lens. I have gotten literal gems this way for very cheap.

I have many M42 A. Schact Ulm lenses. You cannot beat a good 90mm 2.8 16 blade aperture. I love those lenses .. I have 2 Clad in Japan.

Yes, I am with you on the Soviet lenses for the same reasons. I, too, shopped the eBay sellers with the best rep (98% or better satisfaction) and always paid a fair price for a clean lens. Why buy a dog that may need a CLA or more? Early KMZ's have been good to me: 35, two 50's, and 85 and a 135. You know I like the filmic/retro look of the Sonnars and my one Planar, the Amotal. All retro. I understand your yen for the damaged retros. Clever. The newer CV's have no soul. The XCD 55V is as good a lens as I have ever had, though. You again managed to jam in art and science in a short period of time. The teaching skills shine through. Thank you.

Another video (pair of them, this time) of value, interest, and instruction, Matt. Personally I am wary of Soviet lenses (not at all common in America) because of all I've heard and read about their variability in quality. I chose to acquire a sonnar lens in the form of a Nikkor 50mm/2 in Leica thread mount, a lens which you have reviewed in the past. I avoided the modern Carl Zeiss sonnar because I chose not to complicate my life with the focus shift. May I suggest a video comparing the Nikkor sonnar and the Jupiter-8? I'd find that one of great interest; I've never seen such a comparison done. Cheers, mate!

Thanks Chris (and for your kind support via Patreon). Yes you don’t need the J8 if you have the HC Nikkor. I just wanted to make this video to complete my library of lens reviews. Sonnars all give a similar look do you can use any.

we used to just put a thumbprint on the lens or a bit of vaseline.
@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom Жыл бұрын
Ha yes! I made my own Vaseline filter set in my early days when I had the Zeiss Planar ZM and later 75 APO Leica to try to give the models a hand!

Спасибо за обзор! Видна рука мастера, и настоящего художника. Хорошо что мой Юпитер-9 не купили, теперь буду сам снимать. Мой м39, белый, ЛЗОС от "Зенит", который короткий и пухлый 🐷

Oh absolutely. I shot a whole roll of film on a IIIa with a 5cm f2 summar and it looked like something out of the 1890's. I think lenses are trying to keep up with sensor technology, which is why they simply are becoming almost too complicate. Distortion and curvature are thing that older lenses had less of a time to worry about. I'm seeing primes with 10-11 elements, whereas the summar is 4. Lenses are getting too crisp. As I will often joke... but maybe it's not a joke: "do you think you want a 40 something housewife to be shot with a lens so crisp it shows off her crow's feet?

Thanks Andy, yes I love the less perfect lenses with more character. This is one of the best value examples I think.

@@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom I had to chuckle after I made the comment about crows feet. Since you do boudoir photography, I’m sure what I said rings true about women and perfect lenses.

Hi Matt, watched this and the Jupiter 8 video. How well does the Jupiter 8 work on m-mount Leica rangefinder cameras with the appropriate adaptor?
@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom Жыл бұрын
Perfectly with a proper adapter (if CRF type). I have collector friends that use these lenses instead of Leica (both can be as valuable if the very early copies).
@RS-Amsterdam Жыл бұрын
Are you happy with that adapter. Have you ever tried the Leica SL to M adapter? Bit expensive though. Nice to do different stuff, very arty. 😊
@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom Жыл бұрын
Thanks Rob. Yes AA adapters are as good as they get. I have 3. For Leica M-L just get a Novaflex. You don’t need branded.

I don't know if I'd call a Jupiter 9 CHEAP...
@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom7 ай бұрын
Yes the Jupiter 8 is the cheaper one of the series, but these can be very cheap compared to any other RF 85mm lens.
