This kid is a monster who can score goals. He weighed 227lbs in July, up from what the video said he weighed in April, then 2 months later at rookie camp he was 238 lbs. *_And he's still only 18_*

The skating criticism is bonkers to me. He can hold his own. I can't say the same this year about the other "big guys" at the top of the draft like Geekie or Gauthier. Geekie has improved but still isn't on par with other first round talents. Gauthier is sub par even in comparison to geekie. At the end of the day those are guys that are ultimately going to be first round picks due to their size, and people will quickly point to geekies potential defensive prowess or gauthiers shot as if that is the real driving force. I think Slavkovsky deserves to be a top guy regardless of his size.

I've watched almost all of his shifts from the 4 pre-season games he's played so far: My first observation is that he hasn't grown into his body, in the sense that he's yet to figure out how to use his frame to his advantage. He's playing like an under sized skilled player at the moment, rather than a power forward with top end skill. Second observation is that he lacks alot of nastiness, grit, tenacity in his game. Plays timid for a kid his size. To be expected from an 18 year old I suppose, but as he develops over the next few years, this is an area of his game that should be prioritized. I'd send him to the American league and let him develop good habits there. There's flashes of good, but overall his play has been underwhelming/inconsistent. Would love to see him start finishing checks on forechecks, and being a presence out there. Make better use of his size in 1-on-1 scenarios. Skill is there, but needs to used more sparingly. Right now its alot of t drag turnovers at blue line, instead of chip and chase, and using the body to maintain possession. The flashes I've seen are enough for me to believe he will correct alot of these flaws.
@nhldraftpros Жыл бұрын
Yeah, I think we have to remember he's still only a kid and the North American style is different than European. There will be a transition and a learning curve for sure. Lots of time!

I don’t know who you are but this is exactly what I was thinking and hoping for. I hope they can see this man being the best choice.
@gp12372 жыл бұрын
@@Weizboy honestly if the lottery doesn't play in our favor, the top 4 prospects are all pretty good and Montreal can really use any of them. Nemec looks NHL ready, Shane Wright we already know, Logan Cooley if we need a center with speed and offensive flair.. would be a good idea also. And Slafkovsky is quite a fit, Montreal only has a Josh Anderson in that mold, would be refreshing on the forecheck and add some physicality.
@Weizboy2 жыл бұрын
@@gp1237 when you watch them all perform, none of them have this leadership with the puck. There are stick handlers, there are shooters, but he has this quality that he owns the puck and when he has it it will be on his stick or his teammates stick. He is ready for nhl, his skating is amazing, I love his skating, he is strong and has the I like to call the Athlete’s left side right side balance. ( Ben chiarot has it). His posture is high up. He doesn’t fall on the ice. He is going to be like a mats sundin. The grandfather of the ice or match. He needs to move more without the puck. I feel he is a bit stationary at times. But he is young. I wanted him before the olympics, and i proved it to myself again that I know how to pick players. He is going to be a star player. He will need to work on his shot, but let’s all keep in mind he is 17 and still developing. He will get those 100 plus points a season. I said it here officially. He is not a power forward. He is a skilled big player that will control* the offensive zone and place the puck where he chooses. I know Montreal is in a good position to get a great player draft time. But the question is, who will we pick if we have first choice? I would still go with slafkovsky. When you have experts as many call them placing him at different draft positions. Who is right? Lafreniere did nothing, I wanted tkachuk, could you imagine if Montreal had tkachuk? We wouldn’t be the same team right now. We don’t make good choices in Montreal. Don’t go by only points or even positioning. I personally like players that are good once on one against the opponent. This means we have players that create space. Space to pass or shoot. You control the game. With my philosophy I can create a team that would win several cups. And I know it. I don’t go with what is popular. I have a formula of what works. Montreal has a defence that will be incredible in a couple of years. For many years I wanted Jeff Petry out, people love him I never did. People even in the French media are just bad analysts as individuals. Petry on the ice has lost Montreal more games than won them. He makes the most mistakes of any players I have seen in years?! Why no one sees this,? It’s beyond me. People are too blind and bias. I wanted him out while he had value. I’m glad he is going out this summer you have no clue. Another player I wanted to go first year was drouin. He is a bad passer that reminded me of max pacioretty. Gets rid of puck and not passes it, although last year and this year his bad passing has decreased. He Over puck handles. He is such a talented player but will never be that star player that will lead his team. I wanted to trade drouin the year when Panarin was available. I wanted panarin so badly to replace drouin. Pacioretty I wanted out because he was lazy. He was a powerful skater when he wanted, but he was lazy and a bad leader on the ice, he loved to stand corner of the ice after a shot. I wanted him out, glad he is out, yes he can score, yes he has a shot. But look at his shots to goals. Anyone can do the same or better. But about drouin, as much as I love his skill, he will never be the complete player even with all his skill. I knew that from when he came from Tampa. And now with his issues he is worth a second round. Who knows... but what a loss and if I was in charge Montreal would have won already a cup. We treated gonchar in playoffs like shit. The year we got Petry by the way, price was breaking wins record. Near the end of season since we got Petry we lost many games because of Petry and no one spoke about it and how it caused poor price his wins record. Terrible. If you know mats sundin, compare him to slafkovsky. I know what’s best. So I’m glad I saw your lineup. And he is not a power forward. His power is part of his package. He is just a skilled big player.
@niklaslundh89442 жыл бұрын
@@Weizboy Slafkovsky would fit quite well with Suzuki and Caufield, big and strong in the corners, along the boards and more of a playmaker who can score than a powerforward. Both pace and drive but also the ability to slow the play down, that is a playmaker signum along with good passes. His offensive awareness is quite good too. Ofc there is lots to improve but the ground is solid and he surely will be a NHL player with an impact, like him a lot and could be an option if we pick third imo.

Wow he skates with the puck really easily. His Finnish league point production is just under Rantanen, Aho and Hinz. Alot of his goals seem to be shots in the slot, but his passing is top notch. Great shot. By the video he looks to make some risky passes like far side pointman and the pass across in his own zone would make NHL coaches cringe. That's his biggest weakness imo. Probably not a superstar player, but a fringe 1st liner or 2nd liner? Likely.
@adamvatolik43772 жыл бұрын
How you can say he does not have potential to be a superstar? He was the MVP and best scorer in the Olympic games at 17, now he was MVP of Slovak team in world tournament again (I thing 9 points in 7 games). He has great puck control and can be physicals as well (definitely not a weakness).

I'm concerned that his shots came through hustling rather then pure skill. He's got a really good shot but he was getting alot of space and time to take them, compare that to the NHL and those shots would just not happen. I get for a late 1st round pick its acceptable but for a 1st overall thats a red flag to me. He doesn't have a good pace to create those opportunities at the NHL level and for a first overall you need a player who's ready to play top 6 minutes. You cant have him on the fourth line and you cant have him on the third line either so you will need to send him to the AHL or Junior league. Which that means he's a project. Great, a 1st overall project for the MTL Canadiens, thats awesome stuff for the club. Gawt damn this club doesnt learn from their mistakes ever.

@Weizboy2 жыл бұрын
Maybe people like wright for his two way. I think once someone will label a player like a past or present player like Bergeron they tend to be bias. I am not impressed by his skating. He passes too much. As a forward seeker that I would want to see for Montreal, I wouldn’t want a passer. I like his iQ, but he depends too much on others to complete the play which for me is scoring a goal. I am looking for a man on the ice. A player that is almost like a bull. Of all the players I see slafkovsky as the only top player that is a bull. He is 218 6’4. He is such a good strong skater. He also has that left side and right side body balance. He is always on his feet. He is also gritty. He is a very good stick handler and is always looking for someone. He didn’t get points like wright but this doesn’t mean when watching them both side by side that wright is better than slafkovsky. If I were to compare him to anyone that I can think of it’s mats sundin. I am wondering what is ice time was in the men’s league. I may have said too much here. But I see him as a top player and really give intimidation power to a lineup. He will get those points per game in my opinion. It’s very visible on the ice the way he plays. I just love his style. Sadly I haven’t been impressed by wright. Skating, and he just didn’t see, like a finisher like Cooley or Savoie. If I wanted a two way fine, I’ll think about wright. But for Montreal I want slofkovsky 100%. I also like his posture over wrights posture. By your videos I didn’t like the way wright is always getting rid of the puck. I want a player that is confident with the puck and that he is more than anything good one on one with a puck. But sadly I don’t think Montreal will draft him. I could take for hours about analyzing all these players. But like I said, you want a two way player? Go for wright. I just don’t see any physicality. And one thing I never liked is a player that falls a lot, I like a player that falls only to make sure to complete the play only. Years back when Montreal chose galchenyuk. I wanted folip forsberg. I wanted a player that was good passer and shooter and one on one deeker. A player that can end the game or tie it and steal the match. Get 5 players like that on your team and you’ll be winning a lot of games.
@Weizboy2 жыл бұрын
@@nhldraftpros another thing, Montreal chose kotkaniemi, I was not happy at alllll. I wanted Brady tkachuk. What failure with Montreal’s drafting choices in so many years. The league slafkovsky plays in is a lot more tighter. OHL is soft. Picture him in the OHL. He would the be grandfather of that league because of his ability and height. I really see him being that dominating player. Only thing is I don’t like a player that gets too many penalties. Soften that up and I’ll be happy. At this point we need a player just like him. Montreal chose kotkaniemi because he played centre. He was a wobbly skater, lanky type guy, I didn’t like him at all for Montreal. He was maybe responsible defensively, but I want a forward that is scoring mentality and has that presence on the ice. What a mess comparing what Montreal had with kotkaniemi and who they could have had with tkachuk. What a joke. I watched his father for many years growing up. If he was half his father I would take him. He was a hard working player. Played every game like his last game. I had no doubt his offspring would be the same way. And as you can see it runs in the tkachuk family. Very hard headed go getters. They have to win. I love this type of player. He needs to tone down bad penalties and that’s all.

Yeah, he uses his body. Not a punishing kind of player, but doesn't shy away from the physical stuff.

So in the video you praised his skating yet you put it as his weakness. You showed one clip where he could play body and he didn't, but he is actually not afraid to use his body. Putting physical play as his weakness makes no sense. And you put positional play as a weakness to almost every one of your prospects you made video about. I think 17-18 year olds playing against men shouldn't be penalized for their positional play that much...

Hi, thanks for input. For Slafkovsky I said that his skating was pretty good, maybe just needs to work on acceleration and other small aspects. In terms of physical play, he doesn't mind to hit, but there are times when he could engage physically to separate player from puck and he doesn't. And there were only 3 out of 5 prospects that I said they need to work on positional play. However, all suggestions on what they need to work on have varying degrees of how much to improve upon.

I watched his every game of the year, and he definitely uses his size. His physical play is top tier. Juraj's positional play is often that bad, that it should be listed as weakness at the moment, tbh. :/ He will be better at that in the future ofc. His skating is not good overall. His skating is only good when he gets his train going and uses his big body (again, top tier physical play)

Lots of people did... Lots of pro scouts had him at #1 by the end. Bob McKenzie's final list had him at #1, and it's based of ten NHL scouts lists. Corey Pronman had him at one, McCagg also, Boivert, etc. The general population didn't see him first because they had been told for years by the media that this would be Shane Wright's draft. But those who paid attention this year and watched both kids play were not as surprised.

Slafkovsky’s stock seems to be rising and see him in the top 3, but watching this video would make me hesitant to pick him top 10 and he’s looking like another Pavel Zacha. Doesn’t look like he has the instincts to be 2 way player and he doesn’t use his size. How do other Euro power wingers compare, like Jani Nyman or Kirill Dolhzenkov?
@nhldraftpros2 жыл бұрын
I think that Slafkovsky has the potential to be a better two way player...just needs some work. But I definitely think he has better upside than Nyman and Dolzhenkov tho.

I watched his every game of the year, and he definitely uses his size. He is very good in corners, and most of his plays comes because of his big body. And .. Yes indeed. He will not be a 2 way player, he is not good on defense and never will be. (Very mediocre on NHL standards). His other biggest weaknesses are passing and quite often he is reading the play wrong. What I mean by that is, he often tries to make stupid passes or does not play deep when he should. Basic mistakes basically, but that kinda stuff gets better in time. But yeah, passing 100% is his worst weakness. Nonetheless, he's going to be an amazing offensive player and is a top 10 pick. Sounds kinda presumptuous, but in FInland, when he is playing good, we call him Slovakian Jagr. :D:D
