That line has become a bit of a meme, but after recently reading the book, it's explained a lot more and it's actually quite a good point. In fact the character of Malcom in the book comes of as way smarter and less of a creep. He is described as a bit of the academia version of a rock star, but he is also the smartest guy in the room at any point in the book, by a large margin. Highly reccomend the book, it's actually quite a fun read and has enough differences from the movie to make it a pretty much seperate story. The movie is more of an alternate take on the idea rather than a book to movie adaptation. The characters and general plot is shared but the specifics are very different and the story is told in a different way.

The best thing about Jurassic Park, imo, is that the first half is a fun, sci-fi adventure and the second half is a thrilling sci-fi horror, and that changeover happens at EXACTLY the halfway point of the movie, right as the power is killed and the water in the cup starts to ripple before the T-Rex attack. Even the initial trailer splits things right down the middle, where the first half has the big shots, the wonder, the sweeping spectacle of dinosaurs brought to life, all set to Williams happy music and then, very subtly, right as the T-Rex water ripple scene is shown, the music shifts to something moody and dramatic, and the trailer is edited faster, the shots are darker, and it teases a horror movie. Absolutely brilliant.

I cannot put into words how much the original Jurassic Park means to me. I was actually a huge dinosaur nerd since aorund 1991 (when I was 5-6), so seeing realistic, "real" dinosaurs in a movie was like a revelation. I was too young to see it in cinema, but my parents knew how much I loved dinosaurs, they bought the VHS as soon as it was available. I will never forget the evening where my parents, and me and my younger brother watched the film together. We were all at the edge of our seat. It was better than going to the movies. It was a special experience. I loved the movie so much, that on my 9th birthday I had to show it to my friends, who were not allowed to watch that movie (in my country it was rated 12+). It went so far that when their parents came to pick them up, they were upset at my parents that they let them watch the film hahaha.

I find it sad that Jurassic World never made the same effort to make its dinosaur reconstructions up to date, save with the pterosaur Quetzalcoatlus now in Dominion ( they even made the hands point to the animal's side when it stands on the ground. That is how they were actually positioned in life ). In replicating the JP dinosaurs, they failed to replicate what made them so wonderful in the first place.

MAN! I can relate. I was around 5 or 6 when I first seen the movie and I had a JP tent that I would hide in during the scary bits 😂 Still one of my favorite movies to this day (in my 30s)the new films failed to capture the magic and I must admit the nostalgia bug bit me pretty hard with Jurassic World 2015 it was 25 years later on a movie I absolutely adored as a kid and still do so I went to the theaters to see it. Thought I’d was great until the nostalgia wore off and I just felt empty . Anyhoo hopefully this new one is better and I don’t fall for the nostalgia bait again… I probably will though 😂

I don't really gatekeep anything. Anyone is allowed to like or dislike whatever media they want. I think people gatekeep a lot of stuff that is good at best (the Raimi trilogy and the star wars prequels namely) but Jurassic Park is genuinely as close to cinematic perfection as we've ever gotten. The characters are extremely tight and stick to the theme of Progress vs classical ways. That theme and the characters that uphold it are constantly being challenged. Ian challenges both Grant and Hammond. The kids challenge Grant, while Ellie, Ray, and Muldoon, challenge Hammond. No one is wasted. The rivaling mentalities of Grant's immovable fear of the future, as he's bad with tech and doesn't like kids (the future), clashes with Hammonds 'blind progress at all costs' mentality. Shortcuts are fine as long as we pursue progress! And by the end neither character is a villain and they both learn to meet in the middle. Hammond learns to curb his hubris from Ellie in the restaurant and Grant trusts Lex to be the one to save the day, a girl, a kid, and a tech savvy one is the ultimate hero, not the grizzled white man of 40. There are no wasted scenes in this film, everything even Grant fumbling with the seat belts has purpose! Note he had two female seat belt parts that don't traditionally click, but he tied them together to achieve the same result. Direct imagery of two females and life finding a way in the first 20 minutes of the film. This movie is absolute art and Mason is an irredeemable dunce for not recognizing that. (obviously a joke, Maso you're fine, I just wanted to gush about a movie I love)

Sad that I immediately think of the three Spider-man movies than the Evil Dead trilogy when someone says "Raimi trilogy". 2 Evil Dead's are great, third is kind of ehh, 2 Spider-man films are great, third one is kind of ehh. Both kick the crap out of the Prequels. I still swear to this day that Attack of the Clones isn't a movie, it's a two and a half hour ad for Revenge of the Sith.... while the Phantom Menace is a two hour plus toy commercial. "Roger roger"- best dialogue from the first movie.

Whilst I agree with absolutely everything you've said on Jurassic Park, one of my absolute faves, I don't agree on the Raimi films being "good at best", I understand the first and third, despite my love for them, to an extent but the second film deserves the recognition. I feel the fanbase does go well overboard with how gatekeepy they can be about it, for sure, but SM2 is a genuinely well crafted film in so many ways that I understand why so many react that way towards it and it saddens me to still see a tonne of people say otherwise despite understanding everyone has differing opinions.

7:00 point of contention, that is a *real* system being used for the parks that existed at the time. It was a kind of experimental 3D proto-VR UNIX system navigator that had recently been developed. And yes, it was ludicrously inefficient and a huge processing hog that made it rather unpopular. As an aside the brand new nature of it also lends credence to the idea that a little girl obsessed with computers would know about it but a senior programmer would have no idea how to work it. As a further bonus this also lends credence that Hammond really did pay enough for a good computer system for the park, but Ned fucked it all up by using such an ineffective setup.

The Barbasol can reoccurs in the Telltale Jurassic Park game as a MacGuffin. I think the reason it didn't reoccur in any of the films is because, as stated in this movie, it only has enough coolant inside to preserve the embryos for 36 hours (just long enough to get the embryos back to the mainland and put into more permanent storage). So you'd have to set the plot of whatever sequel(s) immediately in the wake of the first film (as the Telltale game does), which I don't think appealed to Spielberg as it limited the locations and situations.

But it got buried in mud, Justin! If films have taught me anything, it's that mud has infinitely insulating properties! Predator couldn't even see through mud and he's an aliem! But no, it's only been an enduring myth because it was so obviously intended as sequelbait that never paid off, but realistically it wouldn't make any kind of sense. You wouldn't have to set the actual film as a direct temporal sequel though, just throw in the callback as being the genesis of whatever is going on years later so we all clap when we see it. Honestly, I won't be shocked if it _does_ make some kind of appearance in the new movie.

I grew up with the first movie in the early 90s. And to this day everytime I watch it. It feels like Steven got the formula right with Jurassic park. The cast, the shots of each scene, the animatronics perfectly blended with the CGI. All the way down to the acting. It was so believable. John, Arnold, Mr. Muldoon, Ellie, the kids. The staff running the park. I was totally convinced that they had ZERO clue of the catastrophic failures and terrors ahead of them during the film. The dark shading they used when the raptors bursted for the first time.the water tremoring right before The T rex rips through it's paddock and experiences the outside environment for its first time while the park guests tremble in fear of this Genetically modified BEAST lumbering around them. I still feel like it is the best Jurassic Park out of the whole series.

This was my first big movie experience in cinema, as a 9 year old I was blown away! Still an absolute masterpiece today. The sequels get progressively worse. I like The Lost World quite a bit despite some obvious flaws. The drop off in quality really starts with 3, although at least that movie knew it was just a schlocky dino-romp. With the JW movies we really hit rock bottom. I absolutely hate BD Wong's line in JW about the whole feather thing, it's purely that feathered dinosaurs aren't nostalgically marketable. The original JP did actually put a lot of the latest scientific discoveries into the portrayal of the dinosaurs, even though they aren't at all accurate today. It modernized the pop cultural idea of dinosaurs. But I guess not enough people were nostalgic for that fact....

Maybe the pivot in the movie, and their comment on the fences not needing to be down, was Nedry trying to get everyone killed? I agree he's trying to sneak out and back in the book and that's why he rushes and crashes his vehicle...and then gets gruesomely killed.
@TwoPairSA
@TwoPairSA 2 жыл бұрын
I'm pretty sure that's his plan in the movie too, he only plans for the fences to be out for 18 minutes which implies that either he's coming back or that he's set it to come back on automatically so he can't be implicated. The only reason people notice start to notice the problem is that he didn't realize (or care) that the fences were on the same circuit as the rides everyone was riding in, which left Grant & everyone else stranded in front of the T-Rex at the exact wrong time. Also for some reason he tries to do this all in the middle of a freakin' tropical storm, leading him to get lost, crash, and die. Presumably if he'd planned this out a little better (and/or if the kids/Grant/Sattler/Malcolm weren't outside when the fences went down) he would've/could've gotten away clean and made it back with everyone none the wiser. The only real question is if he's an idiot who didn't auto-time the fences to come back on after 18 minutes or if his little "secret word" bug messed up the fences further, which would make him an idiot _and_ an asshole.
@oneopinion6806
@oneopinion6806 2 жыл бұрын
@@TwoPairSA It's been too long since I have seen the movie OR read the book to be sure one way or the other. Either late 80's or early 90's there was this animatronic expo going around the world, I think it was called "The World of Dinosaurs". The Deinonychus was part of the dinosaur animatronics, and they had like a book with a short explanation of all the dinosaurs. I have loved dinosaurs since I was a kid, so I was intrigued because I had never heard of this one before. I wrote part of a story about dinosaurs called "Cenozoic World" or something like that, just ideas thrown in, really, nothing complex. Even though the Deinonychus didn't fit the time period, I still added it because I thought it was so cool. Not too long afterwards Jurassic Park comes out, and I recognize the Deinonychus, but now it has a cooler name. I convinced myself that "Velociraptor" was its true name, because it sounded so much better, so apt.

It genuinely feels like Ingen made this and it kinda carries that same amount of cynicism hidden in it. Before visiting there I would not have considered my self a Jurassic fan and neither would the friends that I went with but it was such a fun experience to go through with them so the franchise can always be cherished for giving me that even if the other movies don’t evoke the same wonder and spirit as the original.

If anyone wants the full story wrt the "velociraptor"/"deinonychus" thing, as best I've been able to piece it together, here's what seems to have happened. In 1988, renowned Paleoartist Gregory S. Paul released the incredibly popular book "Predatory Dinosaurs of the World". In this book, he lumped many separate dinosaur genera together, including classifying Deinonychus as a Velociraptor species. As far as I can find, no palaeontologist has ever argued in favour of this classification. However, the incredibly popular book put this mistake out into the public. It is true that Michael Crichton once said in an interview that Deinonychus was classified as a Velociraptor at the time, and Velociraptor was the better sounding name, so he used that. However, he was mistaken in believing that classification was at all supported by science. Paul is seemingly the only person to have ever attempted to classify it as such, and frankly he should've known better. Crichton once cited Predatory Dinosaurs of the World as an inspiration for Jurassic Park, so I think we know where he picked up that particular misconception. A few other tidbits: while the book raptors do seem to have been based on Deinonychus, or at least Crichton's poorly-researched idea of them, the movie versions are scaled up and monster-ified to a point that its even more ridiculous to call them Deinonychus. Finally, Dr Darren Naish has evidence that he protested the lack of feathers on the raptors at the movie's premiere, so like, even in 1993 it seems there was some evidence to support feathering them. Ultimately though, Jurassic Park (1993) did a lot to finally bring the ideas of the Dinosaur Renaissance into public awareness, but today, nearly 30 years later, it desperately needs something to take its place in that regard. Prehistoric Planet sure would've been good for that if it had a reasonable distribution instead of being a friggin apple tv exclusive, I mean who has ever even thought about apple tv for anything else?
@oneopinion6806
@oneopinion6806 2 жыл бұрын
And in general, whilst Crichton tries to add science-y stuff to his fiction, he still adds fiction to make the story work. Hence the T-Rex in the book threw the Jeep up into a tree. The scale/power was all wonky even for a big predator like that. But it was quite a compelling read. Spielberg clearly brought that down a bit and worked the Jeep-in-tree into the film in a more realistic manner.

@@oneopinion6806 Yeah, but unfortunately Speilberg completely completely ruins physical geography in the scene, because it's incredibly unclear where the cliff that the Trex pushes the car off comes from.
